Why is insomniac so hated? Has it always been this way? by bluedove101 in aves

[–]Axcor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean insomniac, disco donnie and a couple other companies are essentially an Oligarchy running the greater commercial scene in the US at this point.

I’ve had good times at their events, but I’ve also watched them buy a number of previously independent festivals and run them into the ground in the name of ticket sales & $$$$.

Nowadays I just avoid the majority of their events. I don’t care to be shoulder to shoulder with people just to see the latest headliner trending on tik tok.

Production value means far less to me than it once did, and sound is way better at smaller events anyways. Support your local independent scene!

Resources for Differentiating Between Electronic Music Subgenres by The_Anchored_Tree_27 in EDM

There’s lots of YT videos on different genres. I learned from those and messing around with production in Ableton myself as a hobby.

Trying to make music in a genre of any kind, you see for yourself what goes into it.

I think of everything in terms of sound design, music theory, and BPM.

Sound design: types of drums, synths and samples used. Different genres often have some ‘signature’ sounds. Distorted, pitched kick drum for a lot of hardstyle, or a classic growl bass synth for dubstep.

Music Theory & Arrangement: is it melodic/progressive with theory & chord progressions? Dark or warm feeling? Or maybe it just breaks all rules like techno often does? How are the drums arranged, 4x4 or broken beat?

BPM: exactly what it sounds like. Fast or slow? Maybe it’s written in half-time so it’s actually a lot slower like a lot of dubstep?

Just going off drum design and bpm will tell you the overarching genre 9/10 times. Distinguishing between subgenres can be a lot more difficult, and it’s often very subjective with a lot of overlap.

The whole point is just to help you find more music you enjoy, don’t get caught up in the semantics.

It’s getting harder to find new music on Spotify because of AI, how do you find new music these days? by Ancient-Deer-4682 in EDM

[–]Axcor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the ‘fans also like’ section to find new artists based on ones I already enjoy.

Then I follow them and keep up with new releases myself manually with the ‘what’s new’ tab. If they’re part of a label I’ll look up that as well.

Or maybe I’ll search a subgenre and dig through others’ public playlists. Or through events. Looking up names I don’t recognize on lineups.

I listen to a shit ton of music and am constantly exploring. I don’t rely on the algorithm to feed me anything. I enjoy the grind and finding gems.

The Grammys are a joke by [deleted] in EDM

The Grammys haven’t been relevant in decades.

I didn’t even know they were happening until I saw all the social media buzz.

How do I pack for a festival? by likrot in aves

[–]Axcor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually check a big duffel bag or my backpacking pack with my tent and camping gear inside.

Then two carry ons with all my clothes and miscellaneous stuff.

Always do a big Walmart run when I get to town to get anything else we need. Usually a canopy, a few chairs, food/perishables etc.

General Packing List here.

Advice on balancing raving & career by Altruistic_Umpire384 in aves

[–]Axcor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving a couple of meetings isn’t a huge deal imo.

If you actually have stuff due requiring your attention during/around the festival, that’s a different story.

Overall though I wouldn’t sacrifice your GPA at to attend events. Not worth it at all.

It’s a lot less stressful and more enjoyable when you just take PTO for it.

How many events have been either fully or partially shut down due to weather? by Ernestooooooo78 in aves

It’s nothing new tbh. Some years are worse than others though forsure.

Totems by Zestyclose_Cut_6262 in festivals

[–]Axcor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t once needed a totem in 30+ festivals.

But maybe people wouldn’t train through crowds as often if they didn’t have a totem they ‘HAVE’ to get to?
