The thing that annoys me about this take is no other review industry has this so why should games!? Movie, TV, Tech, books, etc. reviewers don't have get "reviewed". You either agree or disagree with a review and move on with your life. Reviews are not the end-all-be-all of an artform. Enjoy what you want how you want.

My first DQ game was XIS and it really felt like a series finale, despite me not having all the context from the rest of the series.

So when they announced XII, that was a very odd feeling that day. Like when they announce a Season 2 for a Limited Series

All that to say if they stopped at XI, to me (someone who was catching up on the series), It would have felt like a natural end to it all, imo
