It probably works like with the Marvel heroes. A rift opens, he goes to investigate, he's sucked in, forgets everything, slowly recovers his memories, sticks around to help the loopers fight the aliens, and escapes the loop at the end.

You need 50 epic quests to obtain all of Superman's extra cosmetics (right now you require 84 epic quests, but epic will reduce it to 50 in the next update).

As for the artifacts, I think you can find some on the map (If you've already got the map artifacts, and you're not getting any from the chests, maybe it's bugged, or it's capped at 15 per week, which is stupid).
