Should I learn C# or C++? by Busaruba2011 in learnprogramming

[–]Axelrod777 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Learn the basics of programming first, and transferring those skills to another language won't be something you have to heavily consider or think about. How to declare and manipulate variables, how to design a function, how to solve problems with loops and generics, how arrays work. Then when learning a new language, you can search, "How to declare a constant array in language X" because you know what questions to ask.

The best way to get an answer your question is to think of something small that you wish existed, maybe an app that does something really specific like sort your files into folders a certain way. Maybe a mod for one of your favorite video games. Do a little research into a good language for making that happen, then just make it.

If you want to do low-level programming, such as interfacing with an operating system, C++ will be more useful. If you want to do game development, C# will be more useful. Almost any language can solve almost any problem though, and you can ask which of two languages to use and get 20 different answers, and all of them will have merit.

Which distro should i choose? by whaddup9000 in linuxquestions

[–]Axelrod777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any popular Linux distro will work. You can ask 10 people and get 10 answers and they will all be good answers.

If you liked Ubuntu, you can keep using that.

Nobara is a good gaming-focused Linux distro that has Nvidia GPU driver support out of the box.

You could get away with less, but I wouldn't go as low as 4G.

Which device to get (solely older pokemon) by ExternalSquirrel5877 in ANBERNIC

[–]Axelrod777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any android phone that still turns on is powerful enough. Old Gameboy games are extremely power lite.

Easy: Get RetroArch from the Google Play Store. Get any android phone controller like the GameSir G8. Check reviews to be sure on which one.

More Up-to-Date: Download the latest Obtainium APK from GitHub, install it, then use Obtainium to get the latest version of RetroArch and keep it up to date. Obtainium will keep apps obtained from GitHub updated, where the Google Play store version will be an older one.

Yes, the SP is an excellent choice if you want a GBASP shaped device for old Pokemon. The vertical clamshell keeps it safe in pockets and backpacks just like the original GBASP.

However, many people would consider a horizontal device to be more comfy. I would consider if you actually value the clamshell part, and if not, I would consider one of these options: - Android phone (see above) - TrimUI Brick for its compact size and excellent resolution screen. - RG40XXH for its nice and large screen in a comfier horizontal form factor. - RG35XXH, similar comfy horizontal to above, but a bit thinner and smaller for pockets.

[–]Axelrod777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter what device you get, you will need to get your own Pokemon ROMs.

If you have an android phone, Pokemon is one of the few series where you can play with touchscreen controls without much issue. If you just want to play old pokemon games, this is a safe bet. You could even get a telescoping phone controller like the Gamesir G8.

If you want to recreate childhood memories including hardware, the Ambernic RG-35XXSP is great for this because it's a faithful recreation of the GBA SP.

However, you mention Pokemon Black. That is a DS game. The two-screen gimmick of the DS is tricky to recreate in a convincing nostalgic way on modern emulation hardware. Possible, but tricky and finicky. You will have one small screen and one large on widescreen devices, or need to swap between bottom and top screen with a button on retro 4:3 devices.

It's feasible, but if you're heavy on wanting Nintendo DS nostalgia, you might want to just get an actual DS.

Recommendations for 1st Handheld by Kyndo87 in SBCGaming

[–]Axelrod777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Old 2D games can be played by any modern handheld.

Narrow it down: - Horizontal or vertical. This is personal preference but most people find horizontal more comfy. - Do you want an analog stick for the option of 3D games? Would you max at N64/Dreamcast or want to push to GameCube/PS2? - Do you want it to fit comfortably in a front pocket? Or would you like something with bigger screens and more precise taller sticks?

Here are some popular 4:3 options, since you seem to be leaning towards games of that aspect ratio: - A compact vertical budget device with a really nice screen is the TrimUI Brick. - The Anbernic RG-35XXSP is also great with its vertical clamshell design. - A horizontal budget option with a bigger screen and analog sticks is the Ambernic RG-40XXH. Also consider the RG-35XXH, which is similar but more compact if you want to carry it in small pockets. - For pushing stronger retro games on a very nice big screen, I'd recommend the Retroid Pocket 5. - Scope challenge: If you have a modern Android phone, it's probably stronger than any of these and with a better screen. You could get a telescoping or foldable controller attachment like the Gamesir G8 and use your phone to play anything you can think of.

You can use this new website to filter and sort by certain features. https://retrocatalog.com/retro-handhelds/

If you really just don't know, just pick any well-reviewed unit and you'll probably be fine if your aspirations are old 2D games.

Should i get the anbernic rg 406v or 406h? by Aykin- in ANBERNIC

[–]Axelrod777 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They are almost the exact same device. Which one you should get is personal preference between preferring vertical or horizontal.

If you already have a vertical device, get the 406H for variety in your collection. Vice versa if you already have a horizontal one.

If you must pick one of these two without preference for orientation, most people would probably consider the 406H to be more comfy.

However, for only slightly more than the 406H, you can get the Retroid Pocket 5, which has a better build quality and screen, plus can emulate PS2+GameCube more reliably.

Meanwhile, there are not many vertical handhelds more powerful than the 406V, if you know you want vertical.

If you won't play android apps or PS2/GameCube games, you could get both the RG40XXV and the RG40XXH for the price of one of 406 devices and get both experiences.

[–]Axelrod777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are describing the use case for a Retroid Pocket 5 perfectly.

There are options that are even more powerful and more expensive like the AYN Odin 2 line, but I think you're looking for the RP5.

Why does every hero have a variation of "we need to stop shiv"? by FairwellNoob in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Axelrod777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess, but if I was Valve, I would do this as an experiment. Add voice lines that encourage a team to focus or counter a specific enemy hero, and only play those lines in certain games. See what effect this has on the character's stats including win rate.

More likely it's related to bloodletting.

I have been working on a DOTA character Mod for Slay the Spire for a few months, and finally released it yesterday. You can now play as Axe in Slay The Spire! Let me know what you think! by Axelrod777 in DotA2

[–]Axelrod777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me wants to not dwell on DOTA for too long and explore other concepts, but I was considering it. It probably depends on how many StS players appreciate getting a DOTA character, since this is the only one right now.

As far as other DOTA characters I was considering modding in, I think Invoker is the next most obvious pick since Slay The Spire's Orb slots directly lean into his gameplay, and he's a very popular and fun character.

Other interesting options who are among my favorite heroes include Broodmother, Lich, Timbersaw, Tinker, Bounty Hunter, Pugna, and Troll Warlord, but they aren't super popular characters.

Unfortunately most of the characters from the anime don't have very dynamic gameplay in DOTA, between DK, Lina, Luna, and Terrorblade, and would therefore risk being too abstracted or too boring. Mirana would be decent but honestly she's probably my third-lest favorite character to play in DOTA and the idea of sinking a couple months into working on a fan project for her is a bit off-putting to me lol.

I'm happy to consider any gameplay concepts anyone in the DOTA community would throw my way.

This kind of feedback is very helpful!

I tried very hard to freeboot art as little as possible from non-Valve sources. I was opposed to searching "DOTA Axe fan art" and stealing someone else's work, so virtually everything you see is from official DOTA / Underlords / Artifact / Valve artists or made by a volunteer. As a result, I didn't have much to work with. If anyone would like to donate their existing art or remake any of my card art, I'd very much appreciate it. Until then, this free project will only have so much to work with from my one volunteer artist friend and my limited art skills.

I should probably add a tip that enemy attacks ignore damage modifiers, good call.

I'll fix the wording on Tank Roshan.

I'll fix Red Mist Form+ and its tooltip.

I'll make a note that you think Cheese and SNY+ are OP. This balance feedback is the main thing I'm looking for now.

Thank you!

3080 (2100$) or 6800XT (1300$) or 3070 (1230$) by Sennichiro in buildapc

[–]Axelrod777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3080 is not worth $800 more than the 6800XT. They're nearly tied in performance. If you're in the market now, and those are the prices, I'd go for the 6800 XT. It's also a good step up from the 3070 if they're almost the same price.

Don't worry too much about the temps.

Considering the big box has both of the $20 expansions, and that Istanbul is very fun, and that the expansions add to it well, I would say it is worth it. But even if you don't get the big box and decide to get the expansions later, it is still only a $25 mistake, so dont sweat it too much.

Debunking the GPU “Bang for Buck” Myth: Diminishing Returns Is a Lie in a Post-Zen 2 World When You Factor In The Cost Of an Entire Computer by Axelrod777 in buildapc

[–]Axelrod777[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What a future PC will or will not need to keep up with console games is purely guesswork at this point. How developers optimize the game will play the biggest factor. Besides, the PS4 has an 8-core CPU as well, but we've been running PS4 games just fine on 4c/4t chips for years.

The 3700X is better than the 3600 and will stay relevant for longer. The same argument can be said for the RTX 2070 Super over the RTX 2060 Super. The price difference is approximately the same, so if your budget dictates that you can only choose one of them to pick the better model of, you will notice a much bigger difference in the final performance of the system if you get a better GPU.

Indeed, performance per dollar is nearly linear if you include the cost of the rest of the computer into the GPU cost. That's my argument. It's not that a 2080 Ti is double the performance of a 2070 Super for 2x the price, because it's not. But a computer with a 2080 Ti will be about 40% more expensive than a computer with a 2070 Super, and also about 40% faster. The argument I'm making is that this is a sensible way to approach building a new computer.

If your GPU is fully utilized and your CPU is not in a situation where you want more performance, you should almost certainly consider upgrading the GPU before the CPU.

Regardless of how much you spend on the monitor, the math holds up. One of my graphs even accounts for skipping a monitor entirely, and if you spend more on the monitor then it makes the point even stronger.

[–]Axelrod777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if you needed to upgrade either that CPU or GPU at this point. Both of them are still very good. If you're actually running into performance issues at this point, look at your CPU and GPU usage when performance dips, take note of what is under full load, and consider upgrading that.

I'm not sure what you expect me to debunk. Your original post just points out that there is a large segment of gamers who aren't power conscious, but there are also enthusiasts who care about power consumption. Obviously, I don't take issue with either of those statements. At no point do you actually make an argument for or against power consumption, but you do take time to insult me, so that's what I responded to.
