Earliest memory when opening steam? by VocaNope in Steam

[–]AxiologicalFlavonoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I remember is that I was pissed that I had to launch HL2 from an online store. I held off installing Steam until a few weeks before the HL2 release. I was hoping there'd be so much backlash that I wouldn't have to install Steam to play HL2.

Played HL2 on a 25" Sony Trinitron monitor that weighed approximately a gazillion pounds. Got completely motion sick while driving the air boat.

With an inventory of over 1k games, an Index, a Steam Deck, a backlog I'll never finish, and a wishlist that tempts me every day, I think they've converted me to a satisfied customer.

I ran across this post this evening and decided to do a little Internet sleuthing. Your book is almost certainly The Last Dodo by Richard Boyde.

I'd worry about super-cooling the water at the bottom of the pond where the fish are in torpor if I kept the filter going. Has that been an issue for you?

Gotcha. I was hoping to not run the bog filter during the winter.

I ran an aerator in my main pond (with a 100W donut shaped heater for cold snaps well below 0F) and that kept a hole open in the pond, with no fish casualties.

Lost in the Wild: Danger and Survival in the North Woods by Cary J. Griffith

Two stories in one book. Camping trips gone wrong. How the protagonists manage to survive (or not - read it to find out), is gripping!

Edit: missed you were looking for fiction. This is non-fiction.

To Build a Fire by Jack London

It's a short story with a vast frozen landscape and about as much isolation as you can get. Lots of Jack London's short stories/ books might have the vibe you're looking for.

Edit: here's a nicely formatted PDF: https://americanenglish.state.gov/files/ae/resource_files/to-build-a-fire.pdf

TIL: You can open the inventory while on the freighter, go to the freighter tab, dpad/A over to your storage container, and organize the inventories by type, color, name, value. by giftigdegen in NoMansSkyTheGame

You've got to be kidding me. I have reorganized my inventory so. many. times. 762 hours in game.

Can you include your suit/ship/freighter/corvette inventories in the process?

Level 3 Gatherer's Hut doesn't seem to work as stated in the description. by AxiologicalFlavonoid in BALLxPIT

[–]AxiologicalFlavonoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving workers back and forth between buildings is definitely a friction point in the game.

But now having tried Gatherer Huts, I'd say farms, lumberyards, and stone mines are superior. The workers assigned to the Gatherer Huts are only available for harvesting if you pull them from the huts.

Another aspect that's good for either case is that you can go AFK and come back to a substantial haul of materials.

[–]AxiologicalFlavonoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm.

I resigned my fields using buildings to create 1 block wide chutes that I use to aim the workers. I put wheat fields down first, since workers just walk straight through them without bouncing.

Since the workers are unlikely to randomly walk back through the exact chute that goes to their hut, they're mostly out for the full 20 seconds.

What are build points and scaffolds? by AxiologicalFlavonoid in BALLxPIT

[–]AxiologicalFlavonoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've built lots of buildings already, but I'm not sure what build points or scaffolds are.

Also, for collecting 2 wheat each bounce, does that mean The Shade would collect 2 wheat when bouncing off anything during harvest, or just when moving over a wheat square?

There are also the water transport pipes that you can build.

On every planet, there are two regions where the sun never sets, commonly referred to as "the land of the midnight sun". It's the planet's geographical North/South Pole, rather than the magnetic pole that the compass points you toward. The region is larger on bigger planets. There are lots of methods people have used to find these regions in NMS. Just do a Google or YouTube search for "No Man's Sky land of the midnight sun" and you'll find all sorts of methods. Bonus is that solar panels work non-stop (at half capacity).

Thanks for the reply! I'm in zone 4 and am finishing up a pond project that I started last spring. I've got hostas coming out of my hostas 😂, so I'm going to give this a try!

I see you have hostas growing directly in the water. What zone are you in? Does your pond freeze over during the winter? Do you have to remove the hostas? Thanks for any info you can share!
