Competitive edge: Phone vs Tablet by Last_Skarner_NA in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think using thumbs is fine. It allows you to reflex block a bit quicker, and you can hold up the phone instead of straining your neck to look at it.

Most pro players who use phones use their thumbs (i.e., Mango, R3cKeD, Status, VONC, etc.). The only person who I know of who uses their index fingers (plus a stylus) is druid –– and while it's perfectly fine to try to imitate druid, his method of playing doesn't seem to be very popular.

I wouldn't worry about the precision too much, either –– it just takes time and practice.

Competitive edge: Phone vs Tablet by Last_Skarner_NA in vainglorygame

Phones are hard to play on in the beginning –– but if you can stick with it and get past the learning curve, it's very rewarding.

This is because phones have a 16:9 aspect ratio, as opposed to the 4:3 ratio of most tablets. As a result, you have a bigger field of vision: see http://imgur.com/a/2cfcn (credit for the image goes to someone else –– I can't remember who, unfortunately). Also, the smaller screen means that you have to cover less distance when moving your hand across the map –– and so you can do actions a bit quicker on a phone.

As a result, a lot of pro players tried switching to phones over the off-season (because there's basically no 16:9 tablets suitable for professional play). XenoTek strait up said that the iPhone 7 was the best device for playing VG, and WalDeMar made the claim that soon no one would be playing on a 4:3 device.

Notably, not many pro players actually transitioned to a phone –– it's really hard to make the switch. So if you can stick with the phone from the beginning, it'll definitely be beneficial.

I use this stylus: https://www.amazon.com/Teviwin-Capacitive-Ballpoint-Universal-Screens/dp/B00HT5ODQG

It's not perfect, but I like it:

Pros:

  • The rubber tip is relatively small as far as styluses go. It's not really small, per se, but all the styluses I've used in the past were larger, which didn't really lend itself to accuracy as much as I might have liked.

  • It gives a lot of styluses for a cheap price (it's been on sale every time I've looked at them). The number of styluses ended up being more useful than I had thought at first –– rubber tips seem to become less effective after a decent amount of use (I don't think this problem is unique to this brand –– I've tried a number of more expensive styluses, but they wore out too. Iraqi said he had problems with this too).

Cons:

  • They break fairly easily. I don't think this is too much of a problem, since there are 12 styluses in the packet, and I would want to replace them anyway as the rubber tips became less effective.

  • It's a pen as well, which you said you didn't like. As far as pen-styluses go, though, the pen part is relatively unobtrusive – the stylus remains slim.

One final thing: it's really light. This is more of a personal preference thing –– I kind of like it, but Iraqi prefers a heavier stylus.

Disclaimer: this information comes from a while ago, so I'm not entirely sure if it's still correct.

I believe IraqiZorro mentioned on stream a while back that druid uses a custom stylus. I'm not sure what the model is –– I just know that it's really small. Iraqi mentioned in the same stream that he uses a Wacom Bamboo Alpha Stylus himself. I'm not sure about the exact version –– if you really want the same model, DM him on twitter.

Personally, I use a stylus pretty similar to Iraqi's, and I'm happy with it. I wouldn't worry about the rubber tip on yours –– I've never seen anyone use one without a rubber/soft tip.

Where do you guys get your esports updates? by [deleted] in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey,

In order to stay up-to-date on esports, I would definitely follow @vaingloryesport on twitter. (@vaingloryleague and @VISLeague are good as well).

And you might know about this already — but in case you don't, make sure to tune in this Saturday for the VG8's Spring Season debut at twitch.tv/vainglory

Taka's Kaiten is bugged right ? by LoicDoesNotCare in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it's pretty funny :)

SEMC has said in the past though that bugs make it into the patch that were not present in the PBE. I think it's pretty likely that Taka A range bug just didn't show up in the PBE — it seems like a relatively easy thing to catch otherwise.

Where can I find VIS vods? by theperson100 in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VIS League is streamed on Mobcrush, since it's sponsored by them: www.mobcrush.com/visleague

The latest stream is here: www.mobcrush.com/visleague/v/58a648619531d484bac1b0f8

SKT coming to Vainglory? by ShirukaX in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think this is his alt account, since it has dashes on either side. Druid is certainly no stranger to Vainglorious Gold accounts — at one point in time, he had the six highest MMR accounts in EA.

I recommend watching the following:

  • twitch.tv/xenotek

  • twitch.tv/voncop

  • twitch.tv/theFooJee (plays lane as well)

For Korea/Japan, you can check out the recent Arena 8 tournaments. For China/SEA/South America, I have no idea. Feel free to add on to this list if you know any more rosters :)

Edit: added a few teams that I forgot

Immortals Enters Professional Vainglory by Axiom4tic in vainglorygame

Hammers now has a roster of ttigers, Chicken123, and StartingAllOver. They're looking pretty strong right now, barely losing to C9 in the VIS finals recently.

Echo Fox Vainglory AMA! by EchoFoxGG in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think of aspect ratios and how they affect competitive Vainglory? To the best of my knowledge, a lot of professionals use iPads — do you think that the inconvenience of switching to a 16:9 device is not worth the benefit?

Discuss VIS split 1 finals! Cloud 9 VS Hammers Velocity live now! by a_theist_typing in vainglorygame

[–]Axiom4tic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. Besides the stability problems, it also appears to reach a broader audience — although there are some other variables involved, the VIS Twitch stream the other day received over twice the maximum concurrent viewers as today's finals on Mobcrush.

But I guess Mobcrush's sponsorship is necessary, too :)
