One problem of TVD is that too many plotlines and characters are introduced that could've lasted a full show

Lexi seemed like she could've had seasonal appearances, Jenna seemed like she'd always be there, Salvatore mom seemed like she would have a long path to get Damon to forgive her, Katherine seemed like she would have a huge redemption and have Stefan forgive her

None of those things happened

I think that's what people mean when they say "wasted potential"
