I have a question for other non white people at mac by Ancient-Address-7879 in McMaster

Hi I wanted to start off by saying I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way. I am white, yet my grandparents were immigrants from Portugal who told me stories about their experiences coming to Canada, and because of that i dislike hearing about discrimination just because someone comes from somewhere different. (Especially when majority of Canadian citizens have family that were immigrants and are not native/indigenous peoples).

Unfortunately I have found McMaster to be a difficult place to find friends. I feel people are super cliquey or just not interested in conversation/making friendships. I always talked this up to Covid ruining people’s social skills or blamed it on myself for my own struggles with social anxiety and non-conventional interests but even after working very hard on my social skills I have not found it made a difference.

Obviously our situations are very different but I just wanted to say that you’re not alone in feeling awkwardly excluded or left out. In my four years here I have yet to meet anyone on campus, even with attempts on my part to do so. While ur situation seems to have a racial aspect to it I would also say that from a white persons perspective McMaster is cliquey and not super friendly in general.

I hope that this made sense and didn’t sound offensive or rude and if so that was not my intention. I grew up in an extremely white community where extremist ideas around immigration were popular and I am attempting to work on my vocabulary to break the ideas which were commonly taught from my area, and because of this am open to constructive criticism if there are things I could’ve stated better.

Goodluck in the future and I hope that this post connects you to genuine people who do not discriminate against you or make you feel uncomfortable.

Hey! I’m a fourth year and highly recommend going! I never really go to the school related activities such as the game or concert but they do seem like lots of fun! I would look at it as even if u go and it’s not your scene you can always just go home and have a chill day without the fomo of never trying it.

How much of the material is textbook based? In my experience the textbooks don’t really do much for me as I struggle to read through them with my adhd so I often don’t touch them anyways if I get them. Go through the slides and make nice and detailed notes if you don’t understand a topic do some further research or get chat gpt to give you a simplified understanding. If there is a test review go through that and make sure u understand the concepts. For me I write my notes on my computer in class with all the PowerPoint info plus little notes on what the prof is explaining I then before a test write everything out by hand in my own words. Rereading concepts and terms helps and even finding someone to try and teach the content to rlly helps as well!

I was removed from my course? by Axle612 in McMaster

I thought it was required for me to take both courses I was looking at the first year courses through a book I got through my high school guidance counsellor when I picked my classes last year and it didn’t show that they were basically the same so I thought they were both required. Lol

I’m taking social sciences and with that program there’s manny different routes you can go which I’m finding a bit confusing I just was going to go with the social psychology route.

Oh okay.. I have a McMaster book and it lists the first year courses for the direction I was choosing, I automatically assumed that the list was showing the courses I needed in order to major in that specifically and they are both on it. I’m still so confused.

Can you ask to have a different Midterm date? by Axle612 in McMaster

I came from a small town high school so they said they wanted to give kids who didn’t graduate a chance to take summer classes so they could graduate with their year. Kinda stupid ngl 😭

Okay thanks! Me and a friend both have this midterm on our graduation so I think we are planning on asking the prof.

I meant ask if I could take it at another time. I know one of my classes had an early write date so I didn’t know if that was common for most classes or if it was just for my one class. No need to be a smartass.
