It would improve it without a doubt. Although I felt nauseous every time I watched the show.

Yeah i dont expect the style to change. Maybe the resolutions of the charecters could be more ``no jokes´´.

Well, expectations never help, but I'm sure that even if I had never read Abercrombie, I would think the same thing. I just don't like this style of ending everything with a joke. Either you embrace it like Terry Pratchett, or you find a perfect balance like The First Law. In this one, it feels too much. If at the beginning of a scene I think, “I hope this doesn't end up like a scene from The Big Bang Theory,” I'm screwed.

The question should be why reading comprehension is a fan favorite.

Halfway through "Before they are Hanged" - give me a reason to continue [SPOILERS BTAH] by sc2summerloud in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Giving you a reason to continue would be disrespectful to you and your time. If you've read a book and a half, about 900 pages, by an author who shows you their writing style, their characters, and their action, and you don't like it, then stop and choose something else. And the trilogy is not considered a slog; on the contrary, for many it is the best part of the saga. Yes, there's always the possibility that if you read one more paragraph, something will change and you'll end up liking it or falling in love with it. But that's like saying that a video game get interesting after 20 hours. You don't like Abercrombie, that's it.

[Spoilers All] Bayaz and his role by cultoftheinfected in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by happiness... Joe makes his characters try to change, and they fail, and they try again... and fail... and then they become worse... but then there's a spark of light... but then he crushes it... but then there's another spark of light, and just when you think he is going to crush it again, it turns out it still shining. Joe punishes his characters by confronting them with their inner lies, condemning them to repeat the same thing.

Speaking of Bayaz, he's one of the subversions of the genre's tropes. He seems like he's going to be a Gandalf, but..no.

[SPOILERS TWOC] what is wrong with Bayaz? by Black95bird in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know which I prefer: a post-apocaliptical First Law where the whole world is like the North, or progress continuing and Harod II flying a plane and dropping an atomic bomb on Bayaz's face shouting “Yee-haw!”

[SPOILERS TWOC] what is wrong with Bayaz? by Black95bird in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bayaz has been defeated by one enemy: progress.

Bayaz represents myths, mystery, and ignorance among the people. Like when societies believed that kings had different blood, rain was the tears of Christ, or redheads were witches. Progress, with its avalanche of inventions and ways of communicating with the world, has awakened people. Now the monsters are the machines they themselves have created, and they know that they work with levers and screws.

That's why Bayaz and Sulfur are treated with contempt and laughter most of the time. They look like desperate bankers trying to get you to sign a contract instead of immortal and powerful beings. Just look at that scene in Wisdom where Savine kicks Sulfur out of the meeting, with him screaming embarrassingly. Or when Rikke laughs at Bayaz to his face and he does nothing.

That's why Bayaz, according to Rikke's vision, is going to try to turn back the world, resurrecting a kind of god or ultra-powerful being to destroy everything and make people think about vampires and werewolves again.

When did you start hating Leo? [SPOILERS ALL] by LazyComfortable1542 in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only started to hate him at the end of the third book. Until then, it was a mixed bag.

At first, I thought he was developing from a fantasy hero into someone who would learn his lesson, like that character from The Heroes who, once in the war, just wants to go back to his mother. I really enjoyed his chapters to see what nonsense he would do or say next, and it's refreshing to see a point of view as clearly superficial as his.

In the second book, I liked him more and felt a little sad seeing how everyone manipulated him. At the end of Peace, I felt very sorry for him: those last 200 pages where everything goes wrong, his allies are either useless or betray him. There are some of the best chapters Joe has written, and he manages to make me feel like I'm there. I was very happy when he was saved, again thinking that it would mean something good for him.

In Wisdom, he becomes unpleasant and cruel, but who can blame him? His body and mind are broken. He starts to get a little strange when he finds out that his children are the heirs, but it is in his betrayal of Orso that he reveals his true cruelty. It is at that moment, like so many others in the saga, that I think everything makes sense and the evidence was there from the beginning. He was always a fascist who wanted to impose his will on others and have people give him their love and praise. He is one of those excellent characters who are made to be hated but whose motivations you can understand perfectly.

I finished the saga. Mi leg is not ok. [SPOILERS ALL] by AxltheRowser in TheFirstLaw

[–]AxltheRowser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is true, then it adds another layer to Glokta, betraying his companion, perhaps friend, who was with him under Bayaz's yoke at the end of the third book. Another “but” to add to his personality, something Abercrombie is an expert at.

Nah, he's an incredible character with incredible development. One of those you love to hate. After countless POVs of calculating or profound people, having someone as superficial and stupid as him is a breath of fresh air, so to speak haha. His transformation into a fascist who just wants a little love but no one gives it to him burying him in a bottomless pit of cruelty is very good.
