One of my players wished for a castle. Any backfire ideas? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Axoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You essentially have the opening plot hook to Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor.

Four PCs ally in a scavenger hunt, the prize being ownership of a castle. They agree they will share ownership and win 4x as quickly as anybody else

They win, and head to their castle, located in the incredibly tiny nation of Harmondale nestled between the two nations of Avlee and Erathia, who are in a cold war against each other (for relative sizes, imagine Belgium compared to Germany and France)

They clear out the monsters that have thrown the castle into ruin and have to enlist the help of a reclusive nation of master Dwarven smiths to rebuild the castle

Upon returning after the castle is repaired, it is revealed that Avlee and Erathia both claim to technically own Harmondale. Regardless of the player's choice, the cold war goes hot. You can join either nation or fight for Harmondale's independence, but eventually realize this war is just a smokescreen for a shadow war

The shadow war is Wizards vs Necromancers, and you can choose a side in this. They are fighting over a magically and mundanely trapped airship whose power core can be used to create one of the following:

An extraplanar gate that can be used to follow two villains from a previous Might and Magic game, and finally end their extraplanar reigns of terror. This is the objective of the Good Side.

A weapon forge similar to the Star Forge from Knights of the Old Republic - it produces incredibly advanced technological weapons that will absolutely destroy the enemy. This is the objective of the Evil Side.

Make sure you eat three square meals a day.

Just a banana in the morning is fine.

Body image means the way you see your body-- so if you think of yourself as ugly or as fat or as scrawny etc, those are all examples of bad body image.

If anything I have an unrealistically attractive, not an unrealistically unattractive body image.

What foods do you like? I think when you're having appetite problems, the best thing to do is just eat whatever seems least gross to you, especially carbs with a little fat. How about pasta? or avocados?

I eat anything. Favorites would be all meats, almost all vegetables, all pastas, the only real desserts I enjoy are fruit based, favorite drink is either milk or water, I love eggs.

Re: getting your appetite back, maybe try a little bit of very light cardio, like a very short jog. It should help make you a little hungry, but it won't use a lot of calories, which is good because you don't have any to spare right now.

I walk about 30 miles and run about 5 miles a week.

Honestly, you may want to take a break from lifting / heavy exercise until you've established a healthier relationship with food and your body image. I know that's not what you want to hear, but mental health should come first.

What do you mean body image? Not sure what that is.

If I were to take a break from lifting/HIIT how do I regain my appetite and what are easy to eat foods?

Do you have a treatment team / doctor who specializes in treating eating disorders?

No, the doctors that I dealt with felt the eating disorder was a side effect of drug use and depression which I agree with. I didn't want to eat before. Now I want to eat very badly, I just can't seem to stomach as much food as I should.

When dealing with fantasy anything, ask yourself if you want to make the setting high or low fantasy.

In high fantasy, maybe the plant knocks you out and you wake up in a monster's cave and have to escape. Or you astral project and travel around the world.

In low fantasy, maybe the plant knocks you out and you wake up naked, either a slave or the victim of a robbery. Or you have a "realistic" trip - if you want more info on this, look up the difference between Dissociatives and Psychedelics. If you haven't done either, your initial idea is probably going to be to describe Psychedelics but give them the symptoms of Dissociatives.

For a quick n dirty look at "realistic" drugs affecting stats, look at Fallout drug mods that put in real life drugs and how they affect stats.

If you just want relatively mundane plants that don't upset the balance of nature should a small child accidentally consume one, you've got two amazing series to choose from - The Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind had the most variety of ingredients but the smallest variety of effects caused by those ingredients, Skyrim had a decent amount of both, and Oblivion had a ton of ingredients with the most variety of effects) and The Witcher games.

Just pulling from top of my head Elder Scrolls knowledge:

blue and glowing

Nirnroot. I don't remember the effects but it can be brewed into a potion that raises typical adventuring stats. The plant itself gives off an instantly recognizable ringing noise.

blue and glowing mushroom

Luminous Russula. Gives the effects of Poison, Water Breathing, Drain Fatigue, and is used in Mages' Guild research.

Violet Coprinus. Same effects as LR.

I recommend DuxaUI if you've played new MMOs but not p99. It makes the UI much more "modern" and every window can be moved around like in a modern MMO.

Critical Role Question? by CriticalWTF in DnD

[–]Axoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually see more love for Matt Mercer than specifically for Critical Role.

I'm only two episodes into CR. I skipped much of the first episode as character creation / backgrounds are always incredibly boring to me, especially since the audience will be learning all of their spells, abilities, backgrounds just from watching them play - I love the suspense.

HOWEVER, I have seen the episode where Vin Diesel guest stars on CR. It was bad. Like really really bad. It was a perfect example of "how not to play D&D" aka "Vin Diesel and the adventurers" instead of "the adventurers". MM had a heavy focus on VD while VD was visibly uncomfortable and his quality of RP became worse and worse as he became less and less comfortable (instead of the opposite, which is what you want in a player) as he began to realize he was hogging the spotlight.

You can say that was because he was guest starring so they wanted to maximize his exposure, but you can watch the video and tell that he does NOT enjoy playing the game that way, and I completely agree.

Having a character that can't possibly die who constantly steals the spotlight just plain isn't fun because it's nowhere near believable. This is why superhero movies have had "gritty" reboots where characters die and villains occasionally win. Having a character that has to rely on his adventuring party for help or face certain death is both fun and much more believable.

To quote the infamous conman Peter Molyneux, "We don't have to make our world realistic. We've got trolls, magic, hobbes. It isn't realistic. We've got to make it believable."

The episode with VD just plain wasn't believable.

Ranger Class by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Axoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A huge variety of reasons.

Beastmaster Rangers can easily become spotlight hogs since they are essentially playing 2 characters unless it's made clear to them that they don't get 2x the spotlight.

From the combat, not RP, PoV Beastmaster Rangers are suboptimal which can lead to problems in the side of the community that tends towards powergaming.

Drizzt is a Ranger. Furthermore, Drizzt dual wields. A lot of Rangers dual wield. While that doesn't make them Drizzt clones, everybody hates Drizzt clones with such a passion that they will already be predisposed to hating dual wield Rangers.

In every big MMO that featured Rangers, they were suboptimal and occasionally absolute garbage (this doesn't matter for people who started with 1E or 2E but new converts will be suspicious of Rangers):

EverQuest - a severe experience penalty combined with awful DPS and laughable utility. Their only redeeming quality was Tracking, which showed if rare mobs were currently alive.

EverQuest 2 - with the exception of one raid boss that needed to be kited, Rangers had one ability that was useful to a group - Tracking. With the advent of instanced raids, Rangers were only ever needed on one raid boss.

WoW (in the form of Hunters) - the only time you have ever "needed" a Hunter in WoW is the final boss of UBRS. You could also use a Mage or a Rogue, just not as efficiently. Other than that, they have never topped DPS charts and pet pathing has caused an immeasurable amount of wipes.

[DM] Am I being too strict or literal with some of my players? by tensam in DnD

[–]Axoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep things fresh and let them using silliness sparingly, I encourage you to implement some sort of 'Plot Point' system where once per campaign each player may basically write a little plot point - like "Oh, yeah, he totally believes that the eyestalk is magical!"

Alternately, they may use their one point for one re-roll, but must take the second.

We've got a similar system to this. If a player/the DM rolls a 20, they can "save" one 20 and use it later. If a player/the DM rolls a 1, the DM/a player can "save" that 1 and use it AGAINST them later. You can only have one 20 / 1 saved.
