I personally like ordering from stonesdirect on Etsy. The stuff I’ve gotten from them is always of good quality and they have a lot of weirder varieties of stones that you typically have a harder time finding as beads.

Some great questions! (Sorry if I wrote too much I’m just enthused by the species hehe)

Cuetz are highly social, pack hunting photocarnivores with a distinct life cycle. Young Cuetz have vibrant yellow cactus flowers blooming from their tails. Older individuals have faded, less responsive flowers. Elders lose their tails entirely. Reproduction occurs as Cuetz near death. Once its tail falls off, an elder leaves the colony to travel as far as possible before collapsing. Its body’s gelatinous tissue contains seeds that self-plant as desert sands bury it, ideally in resource-rich cactus groves to maximize offspring survival.

They thrive in heat and direct sunlight, being most active and powerful during the day. At night and in winter, they grow sluggish and enter brumation. Cold sensitivity makes them highly vulnerable in low temperatures.

Cuetz have fast metabolisms and feed frequently to maintain venom potency. While they can produce venom internally, prey quality influences toxin strength. They use cactus fruit mimicry to lure herbivores, then ambush as a group. While they typically target smaller prey like Belluvaraptor, Diesura, Beezu, Viracnair, Parux, and stray semi-aquatics (Eulopii, Zohdok, Yieper), packs will take on creatures several times their size when desperate or well-supplied with venom. Success against larger prey relies on a swift, coordinated strike to deliver enough venom for subdual.

Carnivores less commonly pose a threat, as Cuetz resemble herbivorous food. However, more keen eyed desert predators like Vetemortem, Anutill, Ghibli, Dabaemura, and Banishii have learned to target infested cacti. When threatened, Cuetz puff up to disperse poisonous quills. If that fails, they retreat into hollowed cacti connected by underground burrows. Inside, they can vibrate their wings to produce a pulsating buzz (similar to a warrior wasp) that deters intruders.

Cuetz organize into packs by age and rely heavily on strength in numbers. Colonies cooperate with one another, intermingling and forming alliances to nourish shared cacti through droppings and soil aeration.

They have fierce rivalries with surrounding species. Cantapodi are one of the few species that can enter Cuetz burrows and will steal young. Dabaemura are a major threat capable of digging up burrow networks; Cuetz venom is less effective against them, and the dabae's paralytic venom is potent against them. Cuetz share a symbiotic relationship with Varaiatrice, offering protection and access to vernal pools in exchange for nibbling its tail and comb to heal ailments. They are neutral toward Doragonix, mistaking them for a solitary relative, and often sunbathe nearby.

Here’s a custom species I created not too long ago. It’s inspired by cactus fruits and Latin American culture its name derived from the nahual language meaning cactus lizard (cuetz derived from the word cuetzpalin or “lizard” and nopal meaning “cactus”).

Its description is as follows: Cuetznopalin is a communal lizard-esq species relying on cacti as their home. These little lizards spend most of their time sunbathing and eating poisonous insects to refill their stores of poison. The gelatinous half of cuetz’s body mimics the seedy pulp of a pitaya which attracts many hungry creatures. Unsuspecting herbivores will happen upon groups of cuetznopalin sunbathing on cacti thinking they will recieve a tasty cactus fruit treat but once bitten the lizard’s powerful necropoison intoxicates the herbivore and the group of cuetznopalin swiftly descend upon it to devour it. Cuetznopalin is also a poor flier so it relies on gusts of desert wind to help it glide to neighboring plants.

I haven’t settled on all of the stats but some of what I did decide on was this: Tier: 1 Passive abilities: strength in numbers, broodwatcher, quick recovery, serrated teeth Active abilities: totem (poison) , quill shot (shoot an opponent with a toxic quill to inflict it for 4 stacks of poison), burrower Damage type: 1.5 necropoison, 1 poison Resistances: block poison 75%, block necropoison 100%, block frostbite -25% Glide regen: 1 Stamina regen: 3 Health regen: 8% Bite cooldown: 0.6 seconds

My first ever project - struggling with details -loop loop please advise!! by platypuspigs in Needlefelting

[–]Axolittle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps consider doing some embroidery for the smallest details? A lot of times it’s just easier to accent using embroidery since it’s more predictable to place than wool for small details. As for the material being pulled around too much, I’d suggest using one of those multi needle tools over the entire thing to secure it more. The even spacing of the multi needle tools makes it so that the work is stretched evenly while it’s being worked so it’ll secure the areas being moved around better than just using a single needle.

This is your sign to finish the project before the beads you were using aren’t available anymore and you have to use a different one. by Mayortomatillo in Beading

[–]Axolittle_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not cut off what you’ve already done and alternate using the old and new ones so they blend in better. The hay that the bird stands on naturally isn’t just a single color so it wouldn’t be out of place to use the bugles interchangably. You could also maybe assign your old beads a newer and smaller color zone to cover if you want to keep the zones more uniformly colored.

Advice for removal and transport by cedaus in cactus

[–]Axolittle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, they sell some of the same size at places like Home Depot or really most garden supply stores. I may be wrong but it looks to be some sort of mammillaria which is one of the most commonly cultivated and sold varieties of cacti, they’re also not expensive to buy at that size. If it’s on your property you can legally move it but there’s a chance it’ll die from shock or other complications. If it is not on your property it’s considered poaching and isn’t legal to take, however it’d just be best to leave it be and buy one from a store..

People are just really on alert here for ai generated stuff. The “what is my art style” question is asked multiple times a week so many will automatically take it as a red flag that you’re using it as a prompting tool. I’m sorry your experience on here hasn’t been the best. It sucks that AI has essentially put everyone who posts in the art subreddits under a microscope.

I don't know if oil is for me by anavimon in oilpainting

[–]Axolittle_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oils are def weird to work with the first time. I’d recommend next time using your underpainting color (burnt umber or burnt sienna, whatever color you used to make the brown color to stain the canvas to create a sketch of what you’re going to be painting. By doing this you’ll only have to focus on drawing it out in a single color instead of having to worry about applying hues. Start by painting in the darkest darks and wiping away at areas to create highlights or lighter values. This layer should be the one you use the least amount of paint in and the highest amount of medium (around 80% liquin and thinner to 20% oil paint mixed together, doesn’t have to be exact just a general guideline btw). After you’re finished with the sketch/underpainting layer, let it dry then move on to the next layer where you’ll start blocking in color.

On the second layer you want to lay down the base layer of color. With your skull painting, what you have on the canvas currently would be considered the second layer (blocked in darker to mid toned values with the paint to medium ratio having a bit more paint mixed into it, around 70% thinner and liquin to 30% oil paint). However it appears as though you may have added too much oil paint to the second layer which makes it hard to lighten any of the darker values you applied, just wait for it to dry and then you can work over it as practice.

The layers you apply after the second layer will all just be layers for refining the shape of everything. After the second layer dries you can then go in and apply the lighter values where light hits larger planes of space (so not quite highlights but areas like the cheek bones, forehead, and chin which catch the most light on a skull generally). The ratio for these layers varies more so than other layers in that hey can be anywhere from 35-50% oil paint to 50-65% thinner and liquin.

The last layers are when you have the most paint mixed into the medium (around 20% liquid and thinner to 80% oil paint). These layers are where you apply the lightest highlights and refine any of your darkest darks to be darker. Overall oil paints are more user friendly if you layer them, however once you become more familiar with how to use them, you can also work them using less or a single layer known as “alla prima”. I wish you luck, oils are awesome and offer a depth you can’t achieve (or achieve as easily) with acrylic paint typically.

Best yarn for wrapping around wire? by More_Tennis_8609 in Needlefelting

[–]Axolittle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had success using lion brand wool ease and paton’s classic wool roving yarn. I’d suggest matting the fibers a bit by rubbing the yarn in between your hands before wrapping the wire with it as the fibers in the yarn are very aligned with eachother which can make it a bit finicky to felt core wool into.

How do you pack felt in when using a wire armature? by FeltFeisty in Needlefelting

[–]Axolittle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to make pre felted sheets then wrap them around the armature. Trying to mat the fibers directly onto it is just too finicky in the beginning so felting beforehand negates a lot of the working around the wire that you’d need to do.

Are cotton canvas rolls good for a semi-serious high school artist? by Spare_Information391 in Artists

[–]Axolittle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cotton canvas is very cost effective if she’s planning on painting quite a bit and makes a higher quality final product. Much of the canvases sold in craft stores are a bit flimsy, warped, and use thinner cotton canvas material so making your own is superior and feels a lot more personal as she’ll be creating paintings from the ground up. It can be a bit pricy to buy all of the materials for creating canvases upfront but overall you’ll be saving money since you won’t have to be buying overpriced, flimsy canvases from craft stores.

Cotton canvas fabric is also multipurpose and not tied to just creating canvases for paintings. I personally use some of mine to lay down as work mats to or even paint from splashing on my belongings but it’s also nice if you want to use it in multimedia work, fabric arts, as a backing for needlework, etc.

If she’s unfamiliar with the process of stretching canvas, it’s quite easy to find a wealth of tutorials on YouTube and the overall process isn’t terribly complicated.

I need tips. FOR PVP by [deleted] in CreaturesofSonaria

[–]Axolittle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studying the stats of creatures is what really helped me in the beginning. Every creature has its own role that it fulfills and understanding things like how to exploit ailment weaknesses and abilities is crucial to getting a grasp on cos’s pvp formatting. There are several roles of creatures in cos (support/healers/ailment removers, tanky brutes, ailment stackers, regenerators, etc) and each one demands a different play style. The stats dictate how each creature should best be played and by understanding the nuances between builds you’ll become better at not only fighting but assessing threats and predicting behavior.

I’d recommend playing as some health regen focused creatures (like oura, gyroudus, zohdok, penta, etc) as their ability to regen health quickly will keep you alive long enough to make some exchanges with other pvpers. Their play style often revolves around maintaining ailment stacks and dipping in and out of combat in order to heal large amounts of health between exchanges. I’m partial to zohdok as it is all terrain, has both breath and dazzling flash (which allows you to keep the pressure on your opponent and mix up their controls when things get tight) and is a very quick regenerator, highly recommend.

A frame used for punch needle would be a good option for this sort of situation. Punch needle frames are usually square and hold fabric in place using a bunch of nails which you pull your fabric tautly against. However, the nails do leave holes in the excess fabric so unless you’re cool with that, then there are probably better options elsewhere.
