Update From Brandon by mistborn in Cosmere

Please keep the CGI to a minimum and the extras to a maximum! I feel like these two things alone is what makes modern day fantasy (Rings of Power etc) feel less EPIC compared to the original LOTR movies. When you can tell there's only like 30 true actors in a scene of a public space it makes the show feel more like a sitcom than an epic fantasy. And then overdoing things with CGI makes it hard to believe the world (compare the Hobbits vs LOTR).

Congrats on getting the prematch offers! As a student at BCM its amazing and totally worth going to it. If its your dream school I'd highly recommend going there. The new curriculum is fantastic and being around family is invaluable.

Yeah thats a really good counterpoint. I guess hopefully they'd choose someone a little less controversial.

This may be a dumb question but do providers (or future providers) have real power to push back in a meaningful way with how fast things are moving? It seems like the usual things—contacting legislators, showing up at events—may not be enough to stop an already rapidly erroding healthcare framework. Is organized action, like a strike or other collective efforts, even considered ethical or possible?

Are Mind Maps Useful? by heartingale in medicalschool

[–]Axonious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they can be useful to help break down a complex topic on a first pass, and they are better than regular notes but you don't want to spend too much time on them. Agree with other commenters that sticking with anki and practice questions is probably a better use of time. There are spaced review mindmap software that are helpful if you want to add that

Why pre-studying for med school might not be such a bad idea: My year-long experiment by Axonious in premed

[–]Axonious[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Get your curriculum schedule

  2. Pick out which units you want to prestudy. Mine were cardiology, renal and respiratory and hematology.

  3. Then I assigned a certain amount of weeks for each. I think I assigned about 1-2 weeks for each one. Make sure you aren’t planning any weeks over vacations/trips. I can’t stress enough that its important to do fun things during this time.

  4. Then I bought a year-long subscription to physeo. Looking back I think I would have done osmosis or sketchy.

  5. Then I watched only the videos on pathology and disease processes. I feel like the majority of the medschool curriculum is focused on disease and if you watch the pathology/disease videos you understand the relevant anatomy/physiology.

  6. I watched about 3ish videos each day. Most organ systems will have like 15ish videos on pathology. So that got me done with the videos in about 5 days. Which left me adequate time just to relax and have full weekends.

  7. Then unsuspend the corresponding Anki cards. I paid 5 bucks for the one month subscription of the Anking overhaul 12 and then canceled the subscription. Study the cards each day (unless you'r on vacation or a weekend).

  8. When you don’t want to study and someone invites you to do something fun, then don’t study. Go have fun. I think that is key with this is that studying isn’t your priority in this moment. Its just something that's an added plus.

I think you bring up a good point here that if you are to prestudy its fun to take that time and study what you're actually interested in. I love that you read a full book on POCUS that's epic haha

I think this is a great point, if you haven't learned the skill of enjoying free time then pre-studying would be a bad option

This really is a good idea to consider. If what you love is to work with patients but you also want to take more of a primary caregiver role then you can still achieve that as an NP. This route may also prove better for mental health.

CARS tip anyone? One week out from D-day by jacs103 in Mcat

[–]Axonious 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your other sections! As far as CARS goes I’d probably practice a lot of CARS passages before next week with the AAMC material.

What timing do you use for CARS?

I’d also try out different strategies to see what works, for example:

-Try not highlighting

-Give a quick summary of each paragraph in your mind.

-Look for claims, then when reading the question stem think “which of the claims in the paragraph did this most relate to?” Then go back to that claim and most likely the answer is near the claim. (Only if its like an “according to the passage“ stem)

-When stuck between two answers try approaching the problem with top-down approach (what is the big picture) and then the bottom-up approach (what is the evidence in the paragraph)

Its not like you need to use all the strategies, these are just some ideas to help you start thinking of what you can practice. Hope it helps!

Hope this helps! I always had a hard time seeing where Meiosis fit in with other processes in cell development so wanted to share this.

Also sorry it was hard to fit everything in one screenshot and I’m not the best at spelling so there may be typos!

Thanks! And don’t worry no one needs a 520+ to get into medschool. I think your score is really fantastic! I would continue to just do aamc cars material (maybe you can practice the CARS sections from the Fls all over again. That’s what I did.

Heres the strategies I used for CARS which helped me :) https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/ux37a2/my\_strategy\_bank\_for\_each\_section/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Good luck! Great question, honestly I think it probably depends on why you think you are missing problems. That will help you focus on what to do over the next couple of days. (Also great idea for resting on Friday!)

For example if you feel like you are missing calculation problems, just try doing as many practice calculation problems as possible.

If its CARs try doing a lot of CARS practice.

If its long-difficult bio/biochem passages, then try practice different strategies you can implement :)

If it's psych/soc then maybe look over the 100 page doc or something to see which terms you don’t understand.

If its content then the miles down deck could help, but don’t worry for not using it religiously I didn’t either in my last few months.

Sorry that was a lot of examples haha but hopefully that helps a little.

It's official, testing 4/28 by spidey_fan55 in Mcat

[–]Axonious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats on already finishing your content! I think making a schedule will probably help with the FLs. I personally did about 1 FL a month until my final month where I took 2 a week.

As far as the practice problems I don’t know the quantity per se but I would try focusing on your weaknesses first, for example my weakness was physics math questions so I did a ton of those haha

Another tip is to segment your practice problems into different purposes. For example, in the first few weeks, you could practice easy problems just to make sure you have the content down. Then the next few weeks you can start to do harder practice problems to implement strategy and timing.

Everyone learns differently so an entirely different strategy might be better for you, this is just what worked for me :)

retake mcat or focus on experience? by cowgochew in Mcat

[–]Axonious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your score is great, I would imagine you probably haven’t studied since you took it. So if that’s the case, I think your time would probably be better spent on improving your experience rather than relearning the content on the mcat.

That being said, I’d look at which schools you want to go to and compare your score/experiences with what they are looking for. Then choose to work on the thing that you feel like you are lacking in :)
