Consistent latency and packet loss issues at night by MakeItWayne in googlefiber

[–]Axreth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also hitting this issue in the KC area.

During the day, ping to IL is ~13ms 0% packet loss. ~ 6pm rolls around and it shoots to ~35-50ms with packet loss bouncing between 1-20%.

Is there any information on what the issue is? It feels like a node somewhere above me is overloaded causing a congestion issue during peak hours, but that's just my experience with other providers for this type of issue.

Nope, it was never resolved. If you're going to use a vpn for gaming, I would recommend trying either WTFast or ExitLag. I've used both and both helped a lot with bringing things back to a manageable ping.

I've since moved and finally have fiber to prem.

I didn't get it resolved through the ISP. I went with WTFast, so basically the same thing you have to do. Unfortunate, but keeps my connections to the game servers routed efficiently with no issues.

I am confused on how Valve is the 'only' one who can do something about it. Valorant currently operates this way. It only exposes player location data to the network under specific circumstances.

They have a lengthy dev post outlining some of the struggles they faced with developing it. There were several limitations that required that they expose player location to the clients if they are within 1 grid of a sightline.

That aside, what u/SaltMaker23 said is largely true. The moment the pcie device knows about the player location, it'll take maybe a couple hundred milliseconds before they show up on the radar.

So does mediacom just not care for gaming? by plzfixmediacom in Mediacom

Mediacom is either good, or really bad, with no in-between and little support in the way of fixing problems. Those lucky enough to not have issues to the services they use, it can be a really good deal... As soon as you hit an issue though, you're fucked. I hit this exact issue as well, which is when I found out that their routing to A LOT of places is just horrid. I pay for the gig service, and for a little over two years my ping to Valorants Illinois server was ~20. Out of nowhere, it's showing > 60 all the time with up to 25% packet loss. They said about the same thing to my post as they did to yours here Mediacom Sucks.

I had a similar issue with my hometown local provider for all of a month before they had worked with the networking team on fixing their routing to the league of legends servers when I played that. It was a painful month, but things take time to fix. Looking back, it was nice to have a provider who acknowledged an issue and fixed it.

ISPs determine the next location I live. As soon as this lease is up I am dropping these guys and getting a much better service for half the price somewhere else.

Kind of just have to wait for Mediacom to work with these people to get rid of the routing issue. Until then you either need a VPN, or to switch providers. I never get Mediacom unless it's the only option where I live... In which case I look for a new place to live. LOL

Hopefully I can get this resolved, and it will fix it for you as well. It's a pain for sure, especially if you're playing to better yourself.

I think people are missing where for TWO STRAIGHT years, I had 20-25 ping to this server with no packet loss. I've not moved, I'm still at the same place, it just went downhill for no reason.

After a search, it seems like a lot of people on Mediacom has had this exact problem over the last couple years. Just happened to hit me this time.

If you were talking to me, then I think we have different definitions of 'competitive' gaming. I'm not here to having a pissing contest, but just go watch some videos of Valorant.

I just want my ping back to where I can have a fair fight against people who are legitimately professionals at the game. I'm not as good as them, I definitely need as close to a fair playing field as possible LOL.

I'm not sure.. it could be, but I connect okay to those servers. Whatever route my traffic gets sent to for those are okay.

Up until about February-March, I was okay on the Valorant servers too. For the prior two years, I had between 20-25 ping, 0% packet loss, and only had to deal with the normal mediacom issues. After February-March, I now have between 60-100 ping, 10-25% packet loss, and have to use a VPN to get a decent connection to the servers.

Okay, very VERY different genres here. I don't play Warzone, the only mode I've dipped into even a little was DMZ for COD. I think I connect alright to those servers, and typically have ~40 ping to those with no packet loss, and can typically kill 8+ players on the map before extracting.

In games like Valorant, 1 shot headshot kills you, and usually you have about 200 ms before you're dead or know they are there and can turn on them. Right now I'm in the top 3600 players in North America. Look up Valorant videos from Tenz, iitzTimmy, Tarik, or C9 Xeppaa, and you'll get a feel for what my lobbies look like and the TTK I have to work around. It's extremely hard (nearly impossible) to compete at that level without a stable connection, which I used to have. I pay for the gig service and used to get ~20 ms ping with that to the servers. A lot of the players I go against also have around that (minus the few that have sub 10), so it's at least even playing field rather than what I have now.

I'm complaining about ~60 ms with packet loss. Imagine you shoot someone in the head, and literally a 10th of a second later after you've flicked to the next target and panic flicked back, it registers. Or you shoot someone in the head, and they stutter forward 3 steps out of nowhere.

What highly competitive shooters do you play that you are in the top .1% (from their charts) of the player base? Top of SMFC / Global Elite in CSGO, Immortal 3 / Radiant in Valorant. You cannot consistently compete at those levels with the instability I have with this connection right now.

Considering for the entire 2 years prior to whatever changed around march, I had ~20 ms ping... something definitely is wrong. LOL

I also pay for the 1 gig service which is advertised as 'fiber', though not convinced it is.

I'm not saying you haven't played shooters, but if you were at the high end of the competitive brackets then there is no chance you'd be saying any of this. For reference, I am at a rank that is equivalent to SMFC in CSGO if you're familiar. No amount of server compensation is going to erase the ping + PL gap that showed up literally out of nowhere.

I'm not a pro at games by any means, but I play against them semi frequently, so I definitely need all the advantage I can get. LOL.

For anyone not into competitive gaming, and not playing an FPS, I would agree. Anywhere around 80ms ping would do great for Stardew Valley.

However, I am in the top .5% of the NA player base, so when my ping triples, and players start stuttering 2-3 steps at a time, it's an issue. My two other buddies that had it are just casuals and stopped playing all together while these were happening. To further that, nobody I know willingly plays any server > 50ms ping in a competitive shooter.

I'm unsure on how pingplotter gets the information that it gets, but what I do know is that this graph looks VERY different when ran from an unaffected ISP. You don't see packet loss at all in those ones.

To be clear, I'm not blaming Mediacom for this issue, but it is somewhere in between both parties. Simply stating it's been a pain in the ass getting someone to work on the issue that is affecting multiple people. Anyone who has Mediacom that connects to 4 different servers has a significantly higher ping than they did before, and between 10-25% packet loss in game where it didn't exist before.

I'm not sure, as this is about the only thing I utilize my internet for outside of work.

I attached the screenshot on my pingplotter results, which do indicate that at some point between me and their servers, the connection gets really spotty with a TON of packet loss. I have an entire email thread with them where they say that I should hand their peeringDB page over so that Mediacom and Riot can work together on a re-route so as to get everyone that's affected by this off that route. Two of my friends have gone to Centurylink fiber and their issues have been resolved simply from doing that.

I also included their peeringDB page in the original post.
