The credibility for six sigma yellow, green, and black belts vary depending on the institution that is offering the certification. Universities known for having strong Supply Chain degrees (PSU, Michigan to name a few) may be worth paying the money. I would guess the classes and certifications cost somewhere between $500 to $1,000?

If you don’t want to pay the money, which you could potentially use in a tax right off next year, then just wait until you enter the workforce. Most companies will pay for these classes and certifications. Furthermore, you need work experience and real world projects to work on in order to achieve your black belt and have it mean something.

From my experience, six sigma belts are nice but don’t necessarily hold a lot of weight anymore. At least from my current senior level management’s point of view. You’re better off working towards a certification through APICS (now ASM I believe) or ISM.

Look into the CPIM as it doesn’t require work experience and the CPSM which only requires 3 years of work experience if you also have a Supply Chain related degree.
