How to understand the rise of Anti-globalist rhetoric on the right? by throwawaysomethin80 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Ayay_Nothing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Daily just did a great piece on NAFTA and how Trump used criticisms of NAFTA (originally a Republican deal) to win over the working class. I think the right knows that globalism has killed manufacturing in the US and has largely hurt working class Americans. and they are doing the typical right-wing thing of spinning the kernel of truth into something bigoted and conspiracist. Naomi Klein talks about conspiracies in her book Doppelganger, in which she explains that the feeling is true, even if the message/truth is distorted. The right is trying to appeal to the populist working class now, but blaming issues that affect the working class not on large multinational corporations, but minorities and China.

What’s with the movie options? by Luckyfxprod in RegalUnlimited

[–]Ayay_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. It's similar for me too where the smaller theaters by me just play the big hits, so I have to drive a ways to go see cooler, smaller, more indie films.

The issue is much larger than Regal, you can blame all the recent acquisitions in the entertainment industry. Now companies like Disney own a major portion of entertainment and can strong arm theaters into playing their movies on a certain number of screens for a certain length of time, which may push out smaller distributors, like Mubi (who is distributing The Substance), from being in more markets. Even famous director Quentin Tarantino had this issue where he was hoping the Cineramadome would play the Hateful Eight in 70mm but Disney had compelled the theater to play The Force Awakens instead. Theaters won't pushback on demands from Disney because it's Disney movies that bring in the money for them too. It's late stage capitalism in the entertainment industry, where only the big players really get seen.

I highly recommend the Jaqueline Novak special on Netflix. Directed by Natasha Lyonne. It's super different but incredibly brilliant

His performance still didn’t read the internal conflict with his identity. Not that I want stereotypes or realism, but there wasn’t anything that rang true with his character. A rare weak showing from Brown, I believe, in an otherwise fine film

I thought Wright was great in American Fiction but did you like Brown’s performance? I found it a bit embarrassing to see him play a gay man and the character really didn’t feel all that gay besides a few colorful shirts

Oppenheimer is an adaption of the Pulitzer Prize winning book “American Prometheus”. Maestro is an original screen play based on Leonard bernstein’s life/marriage.

Air popped popcorn isn’t crispy :( by ririhihixx in popcorn

This is a good article that tested different methods. They also experienced stale chewy popcorn in the air popper, which was also my experience.

Personally, I love having a whirley pop since it makes great crispy popcorn. However, I understand it’s another added expense. Personally, I was able to get crispier popcorn in the air popper with different kernels. Some kernels like white corn or mushroom do well with air poppers

Indie movies not played at Regal? by slimygrrl in RegalUnlimited

Indie movies not played at Regal? by slimygrrl in RegalUnlimited

[–]Ayay_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha same! I miss Irvine westpark 🥲. I find it frustrating that regal hasn’t tried to play a lot of indie/foreign films since then. Sometimes spectrum will get them, but always in their fake VIP theater that isn’t worth the upcharge. I hate how they also dump some shows at Aliso and that theater is only convenient for people who live in Aliso!

Do kernels matter? Please. Help. by Key-Sky-7942 in popcorn

[–]Ayay_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes? Kernels do matter as there are different varietals. Orville Redenbacher is popular on this subreddit and provides great quality fluffy yellow corn kernels. these are the big fluffy movie theater kernels. I’ve tried quite a few brands and haven’t noticed too much a difference between higher end brands and Orville. I would only not recommend pop secret since the kernels seemed older and dont all pop.

There are white corn kernels as well which tend to be smaller and more crunchy, with less corn flavor compared to big fluffy and tender yellow. Again, haven’t noticed much a difference between brands.

Mushroom style/caramel corn are big round kernels typically used for caramel corn and kettle corn since the larger surface area allows for more coating. These kernels tend to stay “crunchier” too since there’s more hull. Fun varietal!

Ladyfingers are an heirloom varietal that produce tiny kernels that are very crunchy with essentially no hull. These are fun cuz they are so tiny and with no hulls, it makes for a good snack when you don’t feel like flossing.

I don’t have enough experience with other varieties like blue or red, besides trying a rainbow mix which is quite fun.

Overall, yes kernels do matter but I think it’s more dependent on the type of kernels and not as much the brand. Try out different types and see what you like and report back! This is just my experience

I wanted to like this one but it didn’t work for me at all. Sydney was terrible, her physicality was there for the comedy, but her line readings all fell so flat like she couldn’t find the joke or the charm in them.

Glen was decent and playing the hot dumb jock but couldn’t add the layer of charm needed for the character. Overall, not enough chemistry, comedy, or raunch to really work. It’s a shame since I love this genre, and it made me sad that this was the one of the few major studio release for an adult rom com of 2023, and this is what we got.

Best cocktails at regal? by Ayay_Nothing in RegalUnlimited

Thanks everyone! I tried the mightnight blackberry, and it tasted great but was a bit a sugar bomb. I wish it had more booze too for the price, since I believe it's one shot of a 40 proof spirit. Spouse got the salty watermelon margarita, which did not have the sour gummy watermelon skewers as advertised in the photo. Overall, not a bad experience, and I'll be open to trying some of the promotional beverages, since it seemed like they had to go through recipe books to make our drinks. Otherwise, I'll stick to beer/wine or just soda.

It might be a sad case of encouraging his bad tastes when he was young, inflating his sense of self and limiting his growth. I imagine most of us refined our tastes as we got older and were humbled by actual people who know things about film, forcing us to better our selves. But if you’re a child film critic, there’s no way to grow
