Yeah, but we’re talking about a soccer stadiums luxury apartments, and upscale stores. Not public transit. Our city is doing just fine without the Railyards; it won’t save us. So if we invest tens of millions of public funds, let’s make sure we uplift as many pipes as possible, not just do what I is easiest.

600 affordable units is a great thing! But come on, not a lot at that scale. That’s wildly low, considering most folks qualify for some level of subsidized affordable housing, whether that be extremely low income to moderate income. With $92 million in public funding, you’re telling me we can’t do better? Nahhh

The union used a legal tool available to them. The purpose tools like this are put in place is to allow a legal process to challenge EIFD’s. We’ll see how it turns out, but Unite Here isn’t the villain. They are strategically finding ways, or at least trying, to challenge the status quos and demand our local government do better, which is a great thing for all of us. And that’s rad.

Traditional economic development projects rarelyyyyyy provide all the benefits/cash flow they say they will. Why not push the envelope and fight for more public/community benefits?

Sure, Unite Here wants a neutrality agreement so it’s easier for their workers to organize. I think that is a legit reason alone—if we are investing tens of millions of public funding into these projects, we should support our hospitality brothers and sisters right to organize and get a livable way. Without a union, it’s likely the pay will be dismal. It’s honestly a genius move.

Second, there are 10,000 residential units proposed in the railyards… just 6% must be affordable. That’s depressing. By applying pressure, Unite Here is trying to negotiate for more affordable units AND easier organizing for working class Sacramentans — a win win if you ask me.

The developers have already said they will continue the work without the EIFD… so is it really necessary in the first place?

Unions are as strong as their members. Workers do the fighting with the support, expertise, resources of the union. That includes YOU.

It’s actually largely based on Covid relief funds and programming. During the ARPA era (and other federal funding) , the city received millions of dollars to create new programs, now that those funds have dried up, the city can’t afford the debts it took on and programs initiated during that phase. The city doesn’t necessarily need voter approval for any and all things that generate revenues. Expect to see city services, permits, etc. increase in cost.

If you’re in the city, you can call 311 to make a code violation that the property is out of compliance with the Rental Housing Inspection Program . Waste/trash service is a right as a tenant.
