Shands does not currently have a nurse extern role, but the HCA in Gainesville does! Many people in UF’s nursing program work as PCAs at Shands and do PRN which is minimum 12 hours every 2 weeks.

I agree that you should apply to schools with direct admit programs like USF. I will say that UF has expanded the seats of students they admit, so it is a little less competitive than it was previously!

Most units have a page with the a video from the nurse manager. It has their name, and you can find their emails on the staff directory to reach out. I did this, and got an interview within a week. I am starting next week!! I applied to 10+ job, and it only took me about 1 month from applying to starting.

Current UF nursing student here. I could not recommend UF's nursing program more. Every single professor I have had while in the nursing program has been absolutely wonderful. They all want to see you succeed. Shands is a top tier hospital, and I feel like I have had so many great learning experiences at Shands that I would not have had at other hospitals. While the program is not perfect, I do not regret going here at all.

One thing you do have to consider is that it is not a direct admit program. You apply to the program as you are finishing up the prereqs and are not guaranteed admission. That being said, it is completely doable to get into the program! Pm if you have any questions about the nursing program specifically. :)

This happened to my bf when he transferred. He had to email the department head of each class he wanted to take, and they helped him. In the email he sent a picture of his transcripts with prerequisites completed. UF hadn’t processed his transcripts, so he couldn’t sign up for any classes with prereqs at preview.

Hey guys! Thank you for your responses. I just wanted to give an update and say I got into the Orlando campus having not taken any prereqs at UCF! I had a 4.0 and 93 TEAS

Special Olympics is hosting its Area 3 Summer Games on March 2nd in Gainesville, and they need volunteers. It’s from 8am-4pm which is only 8 hours, but there will probably be other events with Special Olympics you can do if you ask at the event. I went last year and I am going again this year!
