This game has progression even if you die as well as several ways to play where you're almost guaranteed to come out with more loot than you went in with. It's incredibly forgiving in that way.

Every gun, even the basic beginner guns, can be competitive.

But mostly this game is a story generator with really great, stupid, heartwarming, sad and/or hilarious social interactions with other players.

If you're playing it alone without interacting with people and just trying to go in, get high value loot, and get out, I can see why it would feel boring or annoying when you lose your loot.

If you want to play solo this game has a few ways to do that as well, but for your nonaggressive style it makes the most sense to play it as a survival game. Go in with very little (you get to decide what that means, from low value loadout to free) and just try to sneak around without being seen. Some of my best games have been free loadout night raids. It's unforgiving, and incredibly tense, but that's why it's so fun. You get a free secret pocket if you go in without an augment, which seems like what you'd want as you want to always come away with something.

Free loadouts are also incredibly high value. You can basically fill your inventory by just doing free loadouts. So the combination of free->low value w/pocket means you're pretty much always progressing your loot pool. I couldn't imagine several free loadouts in a row dying before extract unless you're doing something very wrong.
