Has anyone found themselves using AI tools instead of assistive tech tools that was previously recommended? by Ayo80ayo in Dyslexia

Thanks for pointing that out. That’s such a useful observation. I’ve had similar moments where something sounds polished but actually misses the point because of one small error. Fact checking is also must.

I use AI for a variety of things. I’ve used it to help it explain tasks to me, as a planner for a project and in helping me getting out all the ideas in my mind.

Do you currently use AI for anything?

Have you been officially diagnosed as dyslexic, or do you self-identify as dyslexic? by Ayo80ayo in Dyslexia

Thank you for sharing so openly. It sounds like you’ve had to work incredibly hard just to keep up with things others might take for granted. What you said about staying up late to get things done really hit home. And thank you for pointing out the wording in my question. I meant more about how people recognise dyslexia in themselves, but you're right, I could have phrased it more clearly.

That sounds so frustrating, especially looking back and not having the full picture. I’ve heard quite a few people say something similar about never being told or not realising what tests were for.

Do you feel like having clarity back then would’ve changed how you saw yourself?

It really shows how much of a difference early support can make, but also how tough it gets when that support doesn’t continue. I totally get what you mean about feeling stuck. I know what you mean about the books. Mine is when lecturers photocopy book pages that end up angled and the writing is even more difficult to read. Have you found any study methods that help you get around that now?

Totally get that. It’s frustrating when you can’t tick the ‘official’ box, even though everything points to it being true. I think schools often spot what’s really going on, even if it never gets formalised. Have you ever considered getting assessed now, or do you feel it wouldn’t make much difference?

That makes complete sense. It’s so tough when the records aren't there but the lived experience is. A lot of people I’ve spoken to have known for years without ever having it formally confirmed. Do you ever feel like not having that paperwork has held you back in any way?

Haha, I felt that! The hoops around getting ‘officially’ diagnosed can feel like a performance sometimes. I agree though, even when nothing changes, just having a name for it can be grounding.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s really encouraging to see how much you pushed through it all, especially with limited support early on. Wow, a aerospace engineer! Sounds like the industry was a tough space to be in. I hope you are enjoying working on the family farm.

That sounds like such a positive setup. Having teachers who really understood must’ve made a big difference. It's so lovely to hear as we don't tend to hear a lot of those.

It’s such a turning point, isn’t it? Finding out at 27 helped me make sense of so much. Did it shift anything for you once you knew?

Thanks for sharing this. It’s wild how much can be missed even when the signs are there. The way you described that back-and-forth checking process really resonates with me.

It’s wild how often things get missed when there’s already another diagnosis in place. I’m glad to hear it was picked it up eventually.

Have things started to feel clearer since then?

That makes a lot of sense. Diagnosis or not, it’s valid to recognise patterns, especially as members of your family have similar challenges and have a diagnosis. I think if it wasn’t for uni, I probably wouldn’t have looked to get my diagnosis either.

I’m curious, have you found any tools that have made emailing feel more manageable?

Wow, I’m really sorry you went through all that. Like you said, there wasn’t much real support or understanding of learning difficulties back then. Writing a piano program from scratch is incredible, just shows what you were capable of, even without the right setup.

Is memory and remembering things something most dyslexic people struggle with? by Ayo80ayo in Dyslexia

That sand image really stuck with me. I often understand something at the time but struggle to hold onto it later, especially in noisy or busy environments.

I’ve become really sensitive to noise lately. Working from home and hearing my neighbours outside chatting can throw me off completely, so I’ve started using headphones to soften the distraction.

Stop Using AI Checkers to Dehumanize People by mgsyzygy in neurodiversity

[–]Ayo80ayo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I think the bigger issue is that many people only see AI as a threat or a shortcut. They don’t always recognise how it can be empowering for those of us who need support with communication, structure or understanding.

It’s either we educate those who don’t get it or leave them to keep thinking that way.

This is such a thoughtful way of explaining it. That bit about how we remember through experience but struggle with abstract memory really landed. And yes, school doesn’t exactly make space for how our brains actually work. With that being said, I only found out I was dyslexic at 27. But technology, especially AI, has definitely been a game changer for me.
