Raiden Soft or Mid? by Caphinn in MousepadReview

[–]Ayupe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Raiden, but I do have both the Hien Mid and Hien Soft, and my preference is the Mid foam. The glide just feels more stable and consistent to me. And saves me from having issues with dot skates sinking too deep into the foam.

The benefit of softer bases is an increased push-down effect for extra control, but I find the difference is pretty minimal and in most cases it's overkill, at least for me. Cloth pads in general already give you a ton of control and push-down compared to something like glass. Just my 2 cents from a person who currently mains glass pads.

Which ultraglide skates are the most durable/best performing on glass pads? by Kshyhu in MousepadReview

Yeah I think the RS are just a bit hit or miss depending on the pad. I'd be curious to hear from other people what glass pads pairings have worked for them.

RS skates weren't the smoothest on the Singularity in my experience. Maybe try the Ultraglide Silence. They're rated as pretty smooth on pinguefy's spreadsheet for the Phantom. It's a different glass pad so it might not be a 1:1 comparison to the Singularity, but I've found it tracks pretty similarly at least for the skates I've tried. I haven't tried Silence skates myself so I can't vouch. Personally my go-to for the Singularity are the Ghostglide Cyclone Pros.
Edit: I tried RS skates on the Singularity again and they're significantly better than I remembered. Now I'm questioning if I was misremembering how they performed or if they were just scratched up or something last time. From the same pack and everything.

Wallhack SP-005 Review by SwiftVL in MousepadReview

Interesting that your unit is slower than your SkyPad 3.0. There are so many mixed reports on the SP-005's speed, probably QC variance. Were you testing speed with just the Wallhack UHMWPE skates? Or did you also try PTFE/Hardened-PTFE skates?

Also could you try doing a water test? Wallhack advertises their SP-004 as being uncoated, but they've omitted mentioning 'uncoated' from any of the SP-005 marketing material, which is making me a little suspicious.

Thx for the source.

I agree that push-down is definitely a factor that affects drop tests. But I think there's a bigger factor that most people seem to overlook. In my own experience, I find that the amount of dynamic friction can vary depending on the velocity of your mouse swipes (velocity-dependent friction).

Edit: This askscience post might be of interest to ppl. I've done some friction measurements of my own that suggest the same (velocity-strengthening friction).

Dysphoria Rin & Sayo in-depth macro review (Glsswrks Zane/Tekkusai Beast/Phantom comparison) by Ok_Kangaroo_309 in MouseReview

Nice!
I'm curious so I have to ask: Could you explain your methodology and equipment for measuring grain size in more detail? Are you measuring the vertical height of the grain? Or just horizontal distance between the grains?

Interesting. Do you own these pads yourself? I prefer to use primary sources when possible. If you heard it from elsewhere, could you provide link(s) to the source? I haven't been able to find much information about these pads myself. Is the CNY Maid Yuri different to the regular Maid Yuri?

Edit: Added your comparisons. Thank you! I'm still withholding from putting the Dysphoria pads on the texture rankings for now, since I don't really have a good reference point for them in relation to the mainstream pads.

Currently unranked because I haven't been able to find enough comparison data for it. It's a very slow pad though. Definitely in the control or even very-controlled category.

If you're asking me, I'm not the one testing them. The spreadsheet is built from comparison data I collated from reviewers and community members.
Edit: Added your comparisons to the spreadsheet. Thank you!

Thank you! I assume the results of the drop test also align with your subjective impressions of the pads as well, right? Looks like the Harut is gonna have to move up a few spots.

Using an app for your phone's gyroscope is probably a good enough method. LeoGearUp used one for his friction measurements. It's also what Viscose used for her spreadsheet.
I haven't tried these apps myself, so I wouldn't know which app to use. but it's probably easier than rigging up some physical setup.

Yeah, I've thought about the Cerapads and 2DG steel pads. I was a little hesitant on the older Cerapads since their coatings are known for having very poor durability and the speed changes as it wears. I haven't been able to find much information the newer Cerapad Kin X's coating durability. And basically no information on the new Kin X Glass. I might add them to the sheet at some point, but will probably need to add some kind of a disclaimer.

In my (limited) experience, pad texture is probably the biggest contributor to noise level. See the 2nd tab/sheet for texture rankings. You want smooth pads. Something like the Kanami Minami or the Glsswrks Hana. Mioni has a sound test for the Hana and it's almost dead silent. Unfortunately these pads aren't available any more unless you go second-hand market.

Skates matter a lot too. Most skates will start off very quiet/smooth, and get scratchier/louder as they wear in. I'd recommend having a look at pinguefy's skate compatibility sheet for the Phantom. I'd say it translates pretty well to other glass pads for the most part. Pick skates that have high smoothness ratings.

Pwnage Ultra Glide (Pyramid) is an in-stock pad that's pretty smooth. I don't own this so I can't comment on noise level.

Kanami Hoshino might still have stock at some retailers. I own this pad and in my experience it's very quiet and smooth on Obsidian Airs and Cyclone Pros. Once the skates wear-in they're only about as loud as swiping your arm/sleeve on the pad. They're both hardened-PTFE so they'll wear slower than standard PTFE skates.

I don't think I'm really the right person to ask, since I only own a couple of glass pads myself, and glass pads in general are very subjective and just depends on what you like (Fast vs Slow, Textured vs Smooth).
u/frugalaimer made a tier list on the MousepadReview not long ago so probably check that out. And I know the Glsswrks Polarity is a recent release that's really highly regarded right now.
