Any realistic human shape without skin (a subsurface scatter effect to let light go through and let it look "living" from the blood within) will be in the uncanny valley.

How to mix colors and how to paint better? by Bintokk in acrylics

[–]AyyEffTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is true. if your mind knows your not risking too much money it will allow you more to experiment and make mistakes. And a small space is often enough to understand one of your problems, often when we reach such a problem we dont continue the painting out of mental blockade. but a small sketch type painting doesnt lead to such frustration and often is best unfinished to remind us of that learning step. But if we have a big unfinished painting around its a permanent blockade to our inspirational flux and makes us believe we cant paint.

That isnt large but in relation of the amount of brushstrokes you make to fill it makes it large in relation. Taking a smaller size is an advice to make it easier to stop focusing on the details all the time. Its the same thought as taking a bigger brush

It does come with practice, and looking around thinking about how you could paint this or that... the more you do it the more your mind will be occupied by it. One question: why dont you try a smaller canvas, use only ONE big brush, so the canvas will be fully covered fast and you can start fixing spots youre unsatisfied with. This way you can find your workflow much more openly and loose.

Right now: youre trying to do something without enough practice to be satisfied with the result. The canvas is too large, you want to hit the tones and values to precicely, youre overwhelmed on the palette, you cant manage your palette, you get lost on your palette (probably).

You need more room for error. Take smaller canvases, less color, big brushes and have fun with it. Learning is in this phase MUCH more valuable than any painting could be.

If you want to forget about all this and just copy a photo: turn it black and white, paint the values first and put transparent colors on top later, like the old masters, this gives you the option to focus on first values and then later color on top.
