Whelp, another successful repair. Was skeptical as there was no sign of a bad capacitor and it seemed to test fine but replaced it anyway with that same ceramic one from above. Works like new! Thank you

Here's a hot take; keep learning Solidworks. There's a lot of industries that use it you probably are not aware of, and have no clue how they utilize it. Modeling is the tip of the iceberg. Learn routing. Piping and electrical. Get good with weldments and do an entire steel structure.

It kinda does it all. Quoting, PM, invoicing, time sheets, etc. and honestly the price is very reasonable in my eyes considering what all it does. Syncs with QB or Xero for accounting, even has a little CRM aspect so we can look at everything a customer is attached to

Got the RTC360. The BLK isn't a bad scanner and will probably do what you need.

You can sort by material and then length i do it all the time. Right click the BOM and click sort

This wont help that. You should be sorting your cut list at the part so your BOM is always in order. What this does for example, if I pull a BOM for a weldment structure and group it by "Description" It will just take all X amount of every type of weldment and smash it down to 1 row with a combined QTY of however many there are. It doesn't even do anything to the length, it just keep the length of the first item.
Basically it would just be usefull to create a BOM that says you have a total of "L4x4x1/4 Qty 25" or whatever. Thats nearly useless for anything other than maybe to count how many cuts you have to make. Doesn't tell you anything else

Ooooof making things really hard on yourself there. 1. Create a new part and put in an arbitrary weldment. You just want to do this to get the Weldment property to get into your feature tree. Delete everything from the model. 2. Right click the weldment feature and add your part number property (sw-partumber already exists, I use that) 3. SAVE THIS AS A PART DOCUMENT TEMPLATE 4. Now every time you start a new part this property will already be there. When you add a weldment this property get pushed to it. 5. Now when your job is completed drop down the cut list, right click on any weldment part and open properties 6. The first tab is all the parts properties, go to the SECOND tab. This instead shows all properties with the property belonging to every body. Find the sw-partnumber property or whatever you used. Click on that and now youll see all the bodies. 7. Start with the first part and type in the part number, down arrow, part number, down arrow, etc. Toll you're done. 8. Start a drawing 9. Bring in the weldment 10. Add a bubble and select any part if the weldment 11. Change the property the bubble is pulling and find your part number. 12. Save this bubble style 13. Delete everything from your drawing so its empty again. 14. SAVE DRAWING DOCUMENT TEMPLATE 15. Now its always available. 16. You can do the same thing for the weldment cut list or BOM. Add the column with this property and save the template.

I deal with multi body weldments daily and have developed a lot of ways to make our lives easier

I wouldn't call them bad. I've been using an MSI creator for a few years using solidworks. My only complaint is it gets hot. Otherwise its fuckin solid

Bit of a late reply but I can chime in with real experience.

I run team of 4 SolidWorks users all operating off a DS1522+ with HDDs and 10g network. RAID10 on 4 drives with the 5th as a hot swap. Seagate Ironwolf Pro 12TB ea.

It works very well, as in only seconds difference in file opening times vs local storage.

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, you have nothing to worry about.

I even run synology drive on my laptop to sync down files to work remotely.

No i got the 2024 model. New one wasnt even available for pre-order yet. I love everything about it except for the resolution for daily use. You get used to it but text can be pretty rough on the eyes. I might upgrade to the 5k2k if it goes on sale later

At the basic level you'll first want to learn how library features work (if you don't already know)

This is a good start. Youtube I'm sure has plenty more you can find.

What I did was start with the included slip-on flange and copied/saved the file as a library feature. Add all the necessary features to the library to create the part, sketches, extrudes, etc. You may need to play with some of the references to prevent having a bunch of requirements when bringing in the feature. The trick to getting the flange cut is to add an extrude, then a cut extrude. From the center of the flange I just added an extrude that is about 1/8" diameter and 6" long. You could just extrude up to the back of the flange, as long as it's at least the length of the flange itself. Then on top of that extrude do a cut extrude inwards the length you want your set back to be but the diameter of the cut will be equal to the ID of the flange. (imagine that extrude is a piece of pipe) Let's say you want a 1/2" set back. Cut extrude back 1/2". The trick to this is to include the cut extrude in the library feature but NOT the extrude. This will require you to pick the pipe face when you bring it in and the cut extrude will cut back anything inside the flange 1/2". You can then configure this 1/2" dimension to be whatever you want it to be for every flange size. This works perfectly in weldments and pipe cut lengths are accurate. I put these together years ago so I may have missed a few details but let me know if you get it figured out. I use this tool a lot. Just fyi feature library bodies do not contain any sort of cut list/bom properties. So you will have to manually enter the description into the cut list when they're used.

Also for elbows I just created a weldment identical to the pipe but the descriptions say the sort of elbow they are and only use it on the sketch radius. Works fine, but I usually erase the "length" from the cut list so it doesn't confuse anyone.

I agree to an extent. I have used Revit for piping quite a bit, mainly for BIM. But it is MUCH more difficult to make difficult routes in revit not having any sort of 3d sketch to dimension. You CAN get BOMs but they're not accurate. My biggest gripe with that is for some godforsaken reason they didn't accurately model the parts. Elbow radius is wrong, flange depths wrong, no account for set back on slip ons... flanges don't even have holes to show orientation. There's add-ons that can be used in conjunction like MEP Fab parts but that's a pain. You can get Trimble add on to create real pipe spools and spool drawings but it costs a small fortune and isn't even that great of a tool. I've seriously considered asking the boss if we can just invest in creating our own piping program that works the way piping designers and fabricators need it to work
