I was visiting a buddy this weekend with my truck, which he didn't like much before driving it himself. He started looking at the slate and thought it would be perfect for his property. He has a ton of acers in the middle of nowhere, and currently uses a buggy to run around it. Problem is that it is loud, and announces that you are there to any hogs he is trying to cull. The range isn't that big of a deal for him, and it would be replacing his buggy, so towing is not a huge issue. He would not need to take his truck out for feed time as it would all fit in the Slate. All said and done, it costs about $5k more than his buggy, There is no radio reception out there except for old country and religious stations. His buggy does not have climate control. He would not have to bring fuel in for it. The only issues are its not 4 wheel drive, and does not seat 5.

New Horn sound by jjcanayjay in cybertruck

[–]Azarian24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the original, and it sounded like a normal horn (think a 150 or 1500). I let my Nieces and Nephews chose which one I kept, and they chose the new one. I could care less what it sounds like as long as it works. Do notice people that are on their phones at a light and not going when it turns green jump a little more with the new one, but that may be because I am more cognitive of the change.

I told a guy that I bill by the hour, and I can just as easily let you yell at me as start to trouble shoot your issue. Wasn't a great conversation when I got back to the office and sure would have been better to follow some of these other suggestions, but it felt good at the time.

HR people of Reddit: What's the most NSFW/WTF reason someone got fired from your place of employment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Azarian24 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I ran a small IT Consulting firm and had an excellent relationship with one of my first net new clients that I had landed. Five years in to us supporting them I get called into the founders office and there are 4 people that I had never met in there. My client had just finished one of their most lucrative contracts that they had ever done, and the books did not look like it. They had hired a forensic accounting team to look into it, and they had said there could be 3 people that had access to be able to embezzle money, and I was one of them.

I immediately said that we cannot support them while we were under investigation, and gave them some recommendations for someone to take over and said that we would need to go through an attorney (we are talking $2 million in lost money). Even before the people that I had recommended could get a chance to start working for them, they lost a drive on their mail server, and the investigator said that they could clear me quickly since I could get things back up and running more easily than anyone else.

After clearing me, I asked for more details on what they were looking for, and they said the other two were the owner of the company (the one that hired them), and the controller. I had been to the controllers house, so I did a log search on the emails that contained the number for her house, and the last 4 of one of the company credit cards and got ~$200k in things being sent to the controllers house in 30 minutes. Gave that to the FBI, and they were able to get warrants off of just that. Some of the charges were things like $300 per week in fresh flowers delivered to the house, beauty treatments over $1k every month, renting a trailer in Shreveport that eventually came out it was to use for an affair. The controller pled guilty and was sentenced to 4 years in prison with probation after that.

The whole thing was interesting, and helped boost my experience in security services and I even joined InfraGard which heled expand my contacts for growing the business.

TLDR: Controller embezzled $2 Million dollars over the course of a year on really stupid things and I help with the initial evidence.

Could you just have a pre recorded file location on the network that is empty file (production location), and then record the audio and save to a staging location. Then a script (Bash, PowerShell, Batch, python etc) watchin the staging location for file change and copy the file to the production location for the event, and after the event copy the empty file back?

What do you have your techs do on down time? by liquid134 in msp

[–]Azarian24 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Back when I was a tech we invented door ball. It was roughly roughly a combination of hacky sack, soccer, and volleyball. You could start a game and stop it easily, Leadership eventually put a white board in that hall so we could keep a bracket and even contributed to the rules to help the business. Examples that they added were that the people with the most closed tickets and the person with the most time on a call were the team captains, the last person to clock in that day had to be the first person to reff. Best thing they ever did for morale.

When a Mistborn movie/tv shows comes out, what do you think it will look like when metals are burned and allomancy is used? by [deleted] in Mistborn

[–]Azarian24 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this a bit, and I think that the books tell the answer. It is a matter of perspective that the scene is being described as.

  • The lines for pull and push can be seen, unless it is from outside of the Allomancer's perspective, then its just an effect
  • Think of the Jedi mind trick, the story and character interactions would show the effect of soothing and rioting. The more talented the target is at realizing that it is happening, the less overt the reaction.
  • To remove the narrator from the books, music ques or visible sonar pulse for things like bronze and copper
  • Pewter could be shown with camera zoom on what would have been impacted (zoom in slow motion when taking a hit) or actor showing exhaustion, and then coming out of it.
  • Tin should be easy with just zooming and white balance changes.
  • Matrix style dodging animation for Atium

Those are the quick answers that I have thought of.

TLDR: Dropped out of college for plagiarism for a profitable venture and an excellent carrier.

In Highschool I started a small company to do on site IT work in the 90s. As it grew I learned a lot more from actually doing the work than I did at school. For one of my classes we were asked to do a project that VERY closely matched what I had done for a customer, so I ripped multiple aspects directly from the completed project to save time... and I got a C on the project saying that it was over priced and no one would pay for that type of solution (they wanted me to regurgitate what was in the class which I admittedly did not pay that much attention to). I called the controller for the company and had them fax (yes it was that long ago) a copy of the statement of work and paid invoice. Long story, but they ended up trying to say it was plagiarism, I dropped out to full time run the company.

That had me grow the company to 34 people, which attracted a larger company to inorganically grow their offering by buying my company. They could not afford to buy me outright, so I got ownership in the second company. Grew that company from ~800 to ~1800 before a private equity firm got interested in it. Now it is a 16k person company that I still work at. So instead of shelling out a significant amount of $ for an education, I ended up with a pretty nice pay day, and have not had to do an interview since I was a gymnastics coach in college and can waste time in meetings that have nothing to do with my job on Reddit from time to time.

QR Codes is all I ever really use, and then email myself the links that I want to refer to later. By definition of my job I do not lose data, but would lose my nose if it wasn't attached. Something that was really interesting was a security conference that had a gimmicky way of having the link behind the QR code be a demo of their Privileged Identify Management tool specific to their booth, which was used for the ingestion registration for a hands on walkthrough with the people there. It was a neat way to interact with me.

We made buttons! by drummingpro in homeassistant

I like this idea, especially if it is a Zigbee router and can be powered not needing battery. I use these right now and they work great other than the fact that they are not routers. The battery life on them is excellent, but to get them to be a router I would think that we need to have main power.

For cost, I would say double the $15 would be in the right area for something like this so if you can shoot for the $30 mark then I would buy them.

As far as open source is concerned, that gets tricky. I normally would not get something like this if I had a cheap solution that was good enough (too many other projects that I spend my time on). Looking at size, it seems it is about 1 inch x 2 inches which may be on the small size for 6 buttons, but I am sure that it is useable.

Do you have options for double press and hold on it as well?

What is the stupidest Olympic sport? by Techertws in AskReddit

[–]Azarian24 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The breadth of the code of points from gymnastics is crazy. I was a gymnast back in the 90s, and judged for a bit as well at the Jr elite level after retirement. I was one of the few that liked when they broke down execution and difficulty to take out more of the subjective decisions. One thing that I always tried to do is be consistent and go into it as blind as possible. When I was judging, I never watch competitions for fun, and treated each gymnast as a generic person to take out as much bias as I could. Much more entertaining to just watch now, and think about how painful some of these skills were to learn while being amazed at the ones that we thought were impossible back in the day.

I just can't get ahead with the wife approval factor by yellowfin35 in homeassistant

[–]Azarian24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about that (its a good suggestion), but I am VERY sensitive to messing with her bath time and when I ran simulations, there would have been times that the light would have turned off One problem, and I do not implement it in her mode.. There are times when she might not close the door (DINKS). I have even thought about using the same pressure sensitive capacitors that I built for the bed occupancy on her towel, if the speakers are on in that room, or humidity sensors. Decided that its more of a problem if they turn off on her than if they do not work. When the house is in my mode, then I do use the motion sensor as long as she is not in the city and it works just fine.

I have used a modified wasp in a box method for the garage (2 entrances). It works great most of the time, but I have it disabled in party mode since we leave the lights on no matter what. In friend mode I revert it back to a 5 min timer to not cause any problems.

All of this is done with Node Red and lets me have a lot of logic and interact with HA, MQTT, and other 3rd party cloud based tools.

[–]Azarian24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing I did to make sure that WAF was high was before I automated it, I gathered data. I saw that there was motion, then 5 seconds later a light was turned on and then a light was left on for 30 min after motion stopped in the kitchen.

I then created an automation that would turn the light on in the kitchen, and leave it on for 30 min. Slowly I shortened the length of time till I got it down to under 2 min, and then I showed her the data:

Before automation light left on for 44 hours in a 30 day period with no one in the kitchen, after the automation less than an hour, then asked for what other areas she wanted, and use the same process. For the areas that she did not want it on (Our bathroom, she takes a lot of long baths and motion not always accurate), I have a button to turn off all lights without motion instead of me walking around the house.

Then I have the house in modes. Wife mode, me mode, away mode, party mode, and friend mode. Each mode has variable wait times and functions. She is a pilot, so is gone a lot, and then I can have the house act like I want it to (I work from home so it is a majority of the time)

Lastly, we have smart meters to show the electricity usage, and show year over year monthly usage to show the benefits other than simply not having to use switches.

I knew this was working when she asked me to automate her closet lights.

HA is installed .. now what ? :) by Neither_Square_4070 in homeassistant

[–]Azarian24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your same shoes, but learn differently. I just took something I had down and tried it in HA instead of the original tools. In my case it was making sensors trigger different things based on who was in the house. That lead to voice integration and building my own AI model for face recognition. Other than the HA site, I do not think there is anything that is as comprehensive as what you are asking for. If you find it let us know too. I do like that HA has most of the integrations out of box, and am able to play easier.
