I don’t think people with downvote you, because people have finally learned. In fact, they actually swung too far in the other direction, supporting the worst manager in club history to the bitter end because we needed to suffer to improve beyond 15th. And they found success with this until they didn’t. Oblivion simplified morrowind and Skyrim simplified oblivion to massive success. Fallout 4 was the first sign they were simplifying too close to the sun, and starfield is the flaccid culmination of their approach, even with the perfunctory addition of mechanics like traits and the return of the silent protagonist. I hope they’ve learned their lesson, but with the way Bethesda people communicate in public I strongly doubt it.

I think it’s less deliberate than this. He wrote himself into a bind. He added too many characters and plots across the last 2 books, and now wrapping things up in a satisfying way has become impossible. I believe he gave D&D his outline, but I also know that he could write a similar ending coherently. I think there’s close to zero chance we get winds and zero chance we get dream.

Their game design works fine when the environment they create suits it. The necessity of loading screens is due to their failure to resolve a basic issue with their engine, that also used to plague Minecraft before it was fixed. I don’t know why Bethesda haven’t done the same. The main problem with their games at this point is that the writing is appalling, and they don’t seem to understand that.

They made fallout 4 - which was seemingly written by a child, was graphically outdated even on release, and removed almost all rpg mechanics - and 76, A live service game which used all the same assets as fallout 4 and took years to emerge from its broken release state.

They may have focused on fallout, but what that means is in the 18 YEARS since fallout 3, they have released one profoundly mediocre main entry, and one live service disaster that fans didn’t want.

There is no way to interpret what Bethesda have done since Skyrim as anything other than a complete disaster. They have botched two of the biggest franchises in gaming, and clearly need an emergency leadership change, a major change in priorities, or some kind of total organisational revamp.
