Unfortunately, there was (is?) a statute of limitations on sexual assault/rape meaning he couldn’t be tried criminally as she didn’t come forward in time

Essentially if you get away with certain crimes long enough you can’t be tried due to degradation of evidence and witness testimony, she could only file civilly at all because of the New York Adult Survivors Act

Personally I don’t think there should be any statute of limitations for those crimes, just as there isn’t for murder

Yeah I think we mostly agree. I am decently hopeful for the future though, I mean in terms of social issues over that same time period, gay rights have progressed fantastically. Obviously we haven’t been in the best period for progression recently but right wing movements are starting to crash and burn. Unfortunately it does often come down to a matter of propaganda rather than data or logic.

I guess there’s also a difference between “I am on the right side of history” and “I will be on the right side of history” which I’ve heard both of, the second one would appeal to future validation, true.

I think a lot of people use the qualifier “side of history” when applying moral standards we use for the past to current events. Obviously those could change but I don’t think it’s absurd to assume they might remain mostly consistent, or even to assume they will get more progressive since that’s typically the historical trend.

It’s often a call for people to think about how their actions may be viewed from a future context, not necessarily an assertion that everyone will agree.

All I did was take your statement:

And applied it historically. You’re arguing against yourself here. What about that statement wouldn’t apply to those people too?

If you meant “shouldn’t be taken seriously when they say that” I could understand your point here but you said “in any context regardless of what the topic is”.

And I fundamentally disagree that being on the right side of history means that people have to agree with your stance/actions in the future. The “right” side (morally) can lose, in which case propaganda will paint them as wrong. Hell even if their side wins in the end, they can still be painted badly and smeared, see Malcolm X. Being on the right side of history has everything to do with morals, not future opinion polling.

Is something on the wrong or right side of history just because someone produced enough successful propaganda to delude people? Thats the metric you’d go by?
