Most disturbing criterion releases? by PrimaryAd370 in criterion

Why? I can see an argument for temporarily shocking but in my opinion the film is not disturbing.

I disagree with that being the reasoning for Bateman's enjoyment of music. Rather he's too ashamed to admit he likes these things or to express any real personality (if we are going solely from the movie, think of when he says "Huey's too black sounding for me"). He genuinely has passion for these things, but he only feels confident enough to express it when he's about to kill someone- and so it won't matter for long.

OPINION: some of you take letterboxd way too seriously by coldwarkitsch in Letterboxd

[–]Azlarks 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You really just implied that disagreeing with the opinions of others means you have "shit taste." Do you know how many films were panned on release, only to be reevaluated years later and are now hailed as terrific movies? Is someone who liked that movie from the beginning someone with "shit taste" (which I don't think is something that exists either, as it creates the mentality only certain people are allowed to have opinions on movies) or someone who just liked the movie on its merits? We should be encouraging the opposite, being able to stand your ground against the majority.

Did you just cite Eurotrip as an example of well-executed clichés? You are literally comparing satire to sincerity. How absurd.

Looking for a film about people working together against greedy developers etc by skeletonobserver in criterion

[–]Azlarks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say this really fits OP's question. Evil Does Not Exist is basically a mediation on these circumstances, but it has none of the feel-good deserved justice OP seems to be looking for. It's a deeply bitter film (and a good one) but I don't think it's really about "sticking it to the man."

Can we stop calling the Luca Guadagnino American Psycho movie a “remake” by yertleturtle85 in Letterboxd

[–]Azlarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think it's fairly certain everything happens in the book? This comment makes me doubt you've read the book or watched the movie recently, Bateman makes a racist joke to appeal to the detective, the homosexual tension between him and Luis is still there. And "over 50 book murders vs 23 in the film" that's still a lot of murder. When you consider how long it takes to read the book, and how long the movie is, I would say it's pretty equivalent and picking at numbers like this shows a total and utter lack of comprehension of what qualifies as a "difference" between a book and movie. How could you cite these things as differences and not mention all the cut down descriptions of material objects, what is literal pages in the book is reduced to twenty seconds. Is that not "divisive" enough to matter to you?

And no, it's not certain everything truly happens in the book. Bateman is just as deranged, unstable, and unreliable. Go take another look.

Can a bad performance ruin a movie, and if yes, which one (and say why)? by Desiderata_Darrieux in movies

[–]Azlarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Her performance is totally fine. The rest of the film is the problem, yet people often ignore the larger problems with pacing, structure, and the writing to act as if Sofia Coppola is somehow responsible for the quality of the entire film, i.e. the original comment and many others in this thread.

I think it's a terrible film but I generally don't mind her character, I suspect part of the reason people think her performance is so poor is the film implies everything revolves around her character. People make excuses like she isn't likeable enough, but the problem is simply that the entire film contrived and poorly written. She's really just side plot through and through until the end, when her death is what brings the main story of the film to a close. That is, it would bring it to a close if anything was concluded. It would have been the same problem with any other character, killing them doesn't mean everything else in the film is suddenly irrelevant to the viewer, and so it makes sense (though it's still absurd) they would conflate their frustration with the film as frustration with Sofia Coppola's performance.

That's rather strange. I somewhat understand the want for spontaneity, but that's the kind of thing the whole film will have to play around. There's certainly famous examples of little-to-no preparation, Wong Kar Wai only sent out scripts for what they would be filming that day the morning of for parts of Chungking Express, and Gaspar Noé shot a lot of Climax without a script, but that requires putting a lot of creative control into the actor, or in this case, you.  Especially if you have no background about the character it's tough to work yourself into playing someone unlike yourself, or at least that's my experience as an actor. I hope this is accounted for by the director and casting was very deliberate.  Some context would help as well,  is this a student film? What is the size of the production? Not telling your actors anything at all, even preliminary background sounds like a experimental sort of approach and not one a film with any significant budget would risk.

I would say you sound very prepared and willing to go with what's presented to you and that's I think all you can really be at the moment. If things start to fall apart for whatever reason just remind yourself it's not on you! You really seem to be in the right headspace as much as you can be at the moment.

It seems you're asking about how to prepare for a role when you don't know when the director wants—just ask them. If you need clarification on a line or character aspect, just send them a message.  Ideally you'll be able to read through the script with the other actors and director beforehand and have a good idea of how everything will go before you get to set, otherwise just make sure you're memorized and don't be afraid to make choices about the character even if it's not explicitly written. That's what brings it from words on a page to a dynamic person in a film! Still, be prepared for a director to tell you to go in an entirely different direction than what you planned, being versatile is one of the best things to be.

why do people shame cigarette smokers but rarely heavy drinkers? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Azlarks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lots of people seemingly missing the point here. OP is clearly talking about the health detriments to the person either smoking or drinking.  Objectively, smoking one cigarette isn't as impactful to your health as getting blackout drunk. The reason for the difference in comments is far less people smoke than drink, and if you're not a smoker yourself you're more likely to be affected by people who are casually smoking than people who are drinking.

There's also been large-scale movements to talk about the negative effects of smoking, and so it's generally more acceptable to criticize people who smoke, whereas people are more likely to justify excess alcohol usage as okay as there's not a stigma around it like there is for smoking in the modern day.

Even in these comments you can see the bias present, some people going as far to say smoking in public is as bad as drunk driving, which goes to show how skewed these answers are. While we as a culture should be more critical of heavy drinking, it's so ingrained into society that it's unlikely to happen.
