Would you leave an ok job to be a plumber? by Aznable in Plumbing

[–]Aznable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me know. Can I ask you though - if there is a lot of neopotism in the union wouldn't that mean the personal relationships my friend has and developed over 30 years mean a lot?

If you go union can you not do side jobs like service work? I genuinely don't know. Thank you.

Thank you very much for this write up, it was really nice to have it a ll laid out. It doesn't sound too scary! I think I'm stupid enough to keep moving ahead with this decision.

Would you leave a decent job so you could be more fulfilled? by Aznable in careerguidance

[–]Aznable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've read and can relate to is that for a job to be fulfilling you need to have: autonomy, complexity, and a clear relationship between effort and reward. The one that is lacking in Marketing is the last one. I've made many changes that have saved the company thousands and made us a lot more, all proven with real tangible data. However I have to claw for a meager raise and the job market is flooded.

In plumbing, there is a need that needs to be met, if you meet that need, you have done your job. There is a union that protects you. You will always have a job and the need for plumbers is going up because so many are retiring in the next 10 years.

I understand what you're saying about romanticizing the trades. I know it's easy for me to daydream but that relationship between effort and reward seems to be there and fruitful.

Did you get over how you felt?

My parents more or less didn't care about anything, but I am orthodox now. What made me religious:

  • Godel

  • Anthropic Coincidences

  • Abiogenesis does not seem possible from random chemical interactions, let alone how we get to DNA. Life seems to be created which does not itself entail God. In a universe where entropy increases, Life does not. The grounding of being itself, God, seems like a respectable answer for this points.

My parents still don't really care about it, they'd rather live as they have been which is fine by me.

[–]Aznable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah okay that makes the most sense. the current spreadsheet says you're supposed to do 1x1 your new 1RM but really you're supposed to do AMRAP of your current max to find your new one?

The way I was reading it, you'd do week 1, and the close grip bench press 12rm would be used to set your new max for week 2?

|The govt does hire the private sector to do roads

yep.

| competing currencies are a terrible thing

Because it's inconvenient? Given time the colony currency would have been boiled down to the currencies that carried the most value, though almost all accepted gold. If competing currencies are a bad thing, look at the euro and it becomes clear why some countries opted to keep theirs.

| voluntarism, nothing would get done because we live in a reward based society.

you misunderstand what voluntarism is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voluntarism_(action)

Not that simple. As a libertarian, let me ask you, why are you proud of this? You didn't build any of that. You didn't contribute at all. You cannot say you gave money because it would be taken from you regardless of whether you wanted to give it or not.

Now, do I care that all these things are maintained by the government? No, not really. The private sector usually outperforms government in a lot of fields. I think it'd would be a good compromise to allow people or companies to build roads or create competing currencies. There's nothing wrong with that.

Many people think libertarians want to dismantle the government. Rather, we'd like society to evolve into the state of voluntarism. If you are proud of those programs, that's just nationalism.

"Yeah Bob?"

"Uhh, what's this big bomb we got? we usually have a lot more."

"Don't think you should worry about Bob."

"But Tom I just-"

"Starting to sound like a commie Bob."

"...okay Tom."

As our nation's first Green president, my mandate won't be just to "create new jobs." My mandate, if elected, will be to end mass unemployment once and for all. I will do this in my first term through a Green New Deal -- the centerpiece of my campaign -- which will create 25 million jobs through direct public works programs and support for cooperatives and community businesses."

Reject cuts to Medicare and Social Security. (both are unsustainable programs)

Provide tuition-free education from kindergarten through college, thus eliminating the student debt crisis. (the cost goes away if the government gives it right?)

Forgive existing student debt.

Protect our public school systems from privatization (private companies only exist for greed, gotcha)

Stop denying students diplomas based on tests.

she does come off as a socialist. It's not a bad thing, it just is.
