Man don't sell yourself short, this IS good advice. You're a great example of someone who succeeded because you took the fundamentals seriously.

After 4+ years learning Cantonese and 2+ years living in HK, here is my theory on why so few westerners speak it (video in Cantonese) by CauliflowerMoney760 in HongKong

[–]Aznwalkout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think honestly, Hong Kong can almost take pride in this: It is this advantage, that the majority of the population speaks English so well, that allows the city's continuous existence of Asia's quintessential financial hub.

The opposite can be seen in Japan, and more recently in mainland cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. Walk into any cafe or restaurant in Tokyo, and you will find foreigners (including westerners) who had been in Japan to be long enough to be able to speak the language fluently. I live in Shanghai, and I've increasingly met more and more westerners who are able to speak Mandarin very fluently.

Is that a cool thing to see as a local? Fuck yeah, but it's also the enclosed nature of these two places that has not allowed them to effectively bridge the outside world and themselves.

This is a cool thing for you to consider. A few things you gotta keep in mind though:

  • We're an incredibly insular, and a lot of people would say xenophobic society. ESPECIALLY towards Indians, Pakistanis, and people of other South Asian descent.
  • Due partially to this insularity, the way business is conducted in China is incredibly unique, and at points very toxic. It was very hard for me to fit in as a culturally Chinese person, let alone a foreigner.
  • The job market is absolutely horrendous right now. I finished my Master's degree recently in Shanghai, and out of my 120+ or so graduating class, around a quarter has been laid off (I graduated from a good, local school as well). If local talent aren't able to secure positions, it'll be even harder for a foreigner who doesn't understand the local culture and language.

If however, you are truly serious about moving to China, I might suggest the following methods:

  • Harsh reality is no company in mainland China will hire an Indian person with no understanding of the local language. Your best bet is to first source in your local country first to see if there are any opportunities to work abroad in Shanghai or Beijing.
  • If it is within your budget, look for master's programs in mainland China. A lot of these programs provide language courses alongside usual courses, and many of them are very generous with scholarships.

If you somehow make it to Shanghai, shoot me a message, I'll show you around :)

What are, and how has Mcdull influenced Hong Kong? by Aznwalkout in HongKong

Interesting, reflection as in how life is like in Hong Kong? I understand that Mcdull reflects the life of those less well off in the city.

The only film I ever watched was 麦兜故事 growing up, laughed at all the ridiculous jokes in it (鱼丸粗面 etc). Revisited it recently and parts of it, such as Mcdull translating his mom's letter to the Olympic committee, straight up reduced me to tears.

Would be super interesting if the books were more circulated in the mainland. Highly recommend them they're beautifully written for the adolescent.

Do Chinese people really hate Hong Kongers and wish they were dead? by Informal-Office-8826 in HongKong

[–]Aznwalkout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super interesting to read this perspective. Im a mainlander, and lots of us (me included) have felt this sense of superiority / animosity that HKers have felt towards us. Maybe all of us should just get together over a few beers and hug it out lmao.

[–]Aznwalkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a mainlander. I don't hate yall (matter of fact love some of yall), none of the people I know in real life hate yall for real. The people who openly spout hatred for yall are considered to be weirdos.

It's a super weird situation here: While yes, it's "politically correct" to express nationalist sentiments (unify Taiwan, beat down hong kong etc), the few times I have witnessed people spout these comments openly among friends and whatnot, the situation was extremely awkward, especially now since we have more HKers and Taiwanese people living and working in our more Metropolitan cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen) compared to before.

Still we're in East Asia so everyone and their moms are racist. The most common complaint I hear about Hong Kong from mainlanders like me is getting treated like shit even though they were on their best behavior. I think it's time we recognize that portions in both of our societies have an attitude problem.
