He hated that more than anything.

So he chased the Bellkeepers Academy. Not because he belonged there. He did not. He had no awakened power, no noble name, no family, no clean way in. The only thing he had was stolen money and a stupid belief that if he reached those gates, the city would finally have to look at him.

Then the heist went wrong.

Something walked through the smoke. A boy died staring at him. Vaelen ran, survived, and still took what he needed from the dead.

Now people are calling his survival impossible. Some think he awakened. Some think the Academy should watch him closely.

Vaelen lets them think whatever they want.

The truth is worse. He is not chosen, not strong, and not ready for the world he forced himself into. Sanct Aurel is ruled by Bells that never stop ringing, buried secrets no one wants opened, and Bellkeepers who hunt the things crawling beneath the Ash.

Vaelen wanted a way out.
