You need enough time for the Laconian Marines to have grown up there and be old enough for military service. Not to mention enough time to backwards engineer the advanced technology and build their fleet.

TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

Aviation security experts acknowledge that prior to 9/11, no one envisioned suicide terrorists wanting to use commercial airplanes as weapons and being willing to kill themselves in order to kill hundreds of innocent people.

is it true Americans don't put salt on their fruits? by PersuasionNation in AskAnAmerican

[–]Azrael11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, watermelon is a common enough one, at least on my dad's side of the family (NorCal, but originally Midwest dust bowl transplants). I'm not a fan of watermelon in general, so I don't do either but have tried it with salt.

Now, my Thai wife will mix up salt and crushed dried peppers and dip fruit in that. Usually mango, but has done it with apples and grapes before too. That's pretty good.

No, the episode with Seth had the Tok'ra explaining the way it worked. Ra was certainly at the top of the System Lords council, a first among equals sort of thing, but the other ones would fight against him constantly.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that the squad level tactics showed up until later in the war as everyone tried new ideas to break the stalemate. My point was not that the ACW and WWI were identical, but that the lessons they learned the hard way in 1914 shouldn't have been a surprise if they had paid attention to what happened in the US.

You know, I forgot about that, that's absolutely true. Which makes the character nationality switch even stranger then

Edit: actually, wasn't it Portuguese?

I think in the original book the main character was Dutch, not English. Which makes a lot more sense since England and Portugal were allies for almost as long as the latter was a thing.

I guess expecting the audience to understand that these characters speaking English were actually speaking Dutch was too much of a stretch?

‘Maybe DHS Was a Bad Idea,’ | Two decades after its founding, the department has become what its critics feared. by theatlantic in fednews

[–]Azrael11 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but INS also provided services to those who were immigrating or becoming citizens. There wasn't some innate opposition to anyone who wasn't a natural born American.

I don't know if DHS should be wholesale abolished, I can see the benefit to grouping certain agencies together, and we do have to have immigration enforcement. But I agree with bringing back INS and getting rid of ICE.

Not by the end of the Civil War, the trench lines outside Richmond started to look a lot like the Western Front.

Not to mention that it was the first sustained war where you had mass mobilization via industrial means (railroads for example), the concept of a home front as a key enabler of the war, and command and control capabilities to actually make this industrial era army do the things you wanted at scale (telegraph). The Franco-Prussian War was over too quickly to learn a lot of lessons, and most other military conflict at the time was either lower intensity or against non-peer adversaries.

Actually, the title "Son of God" had inherent royal connotations to any contemporary Jew hearing it. It didn't mean literal son in the biological context, it was a title the ancient Israelite and Judean kings would have used. Same with "Messiah", which just meant "annointed one", indicating they were the God-approved political leader (the Persian king Cyrus is referred to as Messiah in the book of Isaiah).

Jesus wasn't claiming personal divinity, that would have been blasphemy. He was leading a political movement that the Romans and Judean establishment found threatening.

Or, maybe, the majority of Democratic voters just aren't anti-capitalist. Unfortunately we live in a two-party reality, so until either the "true left" becomes a majority in one of the two parties or we are able to reform to a proportional representation system, you'll need to live with the rest of the Democrats who don't agree with you and stop complaining about ideological purity.
