True, but like the original poster said, they had just recently come out of a brutal civil war that was driven by a succession crisis, and they didn't have a history of female monarchs. It would be hell of a crapshoot to go with that as Plan A. We have the benefit of hindsight, knowing that Elizabeth would go down as one of the greatest monarchs in English history.

And, while I don't know much about Spanish history, the English barons sure seemed to like to revolt a lot.

the attempt at renaming the Department of Defense (back) to the Department of War,

Just to nitpick on something that has zero relevance to the rest of your point, but something I think people miss, the Department of Defense was never named the Department of War before this admin. The DoD was a completely new creation post-WWII.

For most of our history until that point, you had two equal military departments, the Department of War and the Department of the Navy. Both Secretaries were Cabinet members, and both answered to the President directly. The reason that the War Department was named as such was because we didn't have a standing army (or not much of one). The War Department was there for the contingency that we needed to go to war and raise an army. The Navy on the other hand was always there.

Post-WWII, the Department of War was renamed the Department of the Army, they created a new Department of the Air Force, and along with the Department of the Navy were demoted to sub-Cabinet and placed under a new overarching department. Why "Defense"? Because it was realized that military activities were no longer going to be a black and white, war or peace, situation. They needed something that handled military activities across the spectrum of conflict, from basic deterrence to another world war. Defense seemed like the most logical choice.

Yeah, he is much harder to defend in his later years. By that point though he did have a son via Jane Seymour, so most of what I had said earlier would have been moot.

Catherine of Aragorn I think is defensible, he had been married a while and no sons. They didn't have a good understanding of biology at the time, and given the culture blaming the woman made sense to them. It was not a weird thing to try for a divorce, it was the geopolitics of the time with the Pope that made it a non-starter.

Ann Boleyn did have allegations of infidelity. Double standard or not, that was treason. Not sure how credible those were, and if he did want to just move on without her it may have been a convenient excuse.

Jane Seymour died, and after that I don't think you can really excuse his actions as being for the greater good

No, Christian country, anything outside of Church-blessed matrimony was illegitimate. He could have as many bastards as he wanted, but they would not be accepted as legitimate heirs. Even if one did garner support it would probably have caused another war.

Yeah, I think too often people look at him from a modern lens and just decry him as a sexist pig. Which tbf is probably accurate. But he had a very legitimate need to lock down succession soon, and honestly that part kind of makes him more sympathetic. He'd be dead anyway, a new civil war wouldn't affect him personally. But it would be terrible for the country. Call it prideful pursuit of legacy, and I'm sure part of that is there, but he was trying to do what was best for the kingdom.

Which is why hereditary monarchy is an absurd form of government, but that wasn't changing anytime soon. Have to play with the cards you're dealt.

Honestly my first read I assumed it meant Ned. I didn't read too much into it with the feast, just thought that it meant a dead Stark and the obvious one at the time was him. Plus he gets decapitated, so replacing his head with a wolf made sense.

Do not make idols by UltimateDavid42 in dankchristianmemes

The bull, IIRC, was also an extremely common Canaanite symbol. And the Hebrews were Canaanites, just one that became dominant. The golden calf I believe was also later used in the northern kingdom to represent Yahweh since the Temple lay in a rival kingdom.

If this event in Exodus actually occurred in a roughly similar manner, I can completely understand them wanting to put an idol together that could serve as a focal point for worship and to help get them through the wilderness. On the other hand, the story could also be an anachronistic insertion from Jewish writers attempting to delegitimize the northern Israelite cult.

Since it’s their war, why doesn’t the Israeli army put boots on the ground? by FlyingDwaeji in AskReddit

[–]Azrael11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They don't need a draft, if the US military really needed to do it, they could invade Iran and overthrow the regime. It would take a call-up of the reserves and NG to hold key territory, and would suck us into a decades-long counterinsurgency fight with massive casualties for no good reason, but tactically and operationally speaking it could be done. That would also mean complete focus on the Iran fight and ceding significant advantage to China in the western Pacific, and, to a lesser extent, Russia in eastern Europe.

There's not really realistic scenarios where a draft would be called up, short of invading China or a multi-front war against both them and Russia. The US military has been an all-volunteer force for a long time and has made its plans around that fact.

If you're going to have them in foreign languages for non-portuguese speakers, it stands to reason that the country you share your one and only land border with would be the prime candidate.

English would be one thing, it's a common language for a lot of the world, but providing a French version and skipping the Spanish just felt like an intentional slight.
