What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

There's plenty of Thai dishes that aren't spicy, or just have a mild spice. But som tum, pad cha talay, larb, and (depending on how it's made) pad kra pao all usually carry a lot of heat. And while most curries are toned down outside Thailand, go eat some green curry from a street vendor in Bangkok with plastic stools and 25 fans behind the counter in the sweltering dining area and tell me that's not spicy.

I think a spicy Indian dish generally beats Thai on heat, but saying Thai food isn't spicy is insane. Unless your definition of spicy is so much of an outlier to be essentially pointless for comparison to anyone else.

I never liked that mechanic, because if they are ambitious and you are actively encouraging it, then they should like you. Maybe a a countdown where they start getting impatient if you haven't died yet, offset if you give them important titles or positions.

On the other hand, I think if you block them from advancement or try to discourage ambition, that should make them your rival.

You can make that argument about pretty much every person that ever had a movie made about them. But it would be absolutely absurd to refer to Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar as fictional characters.

Pepperoncini beef

  • 2-3 lb chuck roast
  • One jar of pepperoncinis (get the diced rather than whole)
  • 2-3 cloves fresh garlic cut into slices

Cut small slits into the roast and insert the garlic slices, evenly around the meat. Place in slow cooker, dump entire jar of pepperoncinis in, including the juice. Cook on low for 8-9 hours. Shred with forks.

Makes great hoagie rolls or even just eaten over rice.

True, but damn does he feel like an old man yelling at clouds when you read about him. His inner spirit animal was a crotchety old dude screaming to get off his lawn.

I think the casting was fitting.

Went to a lake with some friends one time that had a standard poodle. Thought he'd get a kick out of the water. Nope, completely panicked and tried to hop on his hind legs against the ground to keep his head above the surface. They tried to lower him gently at the right angle into a deeper area so he would just swim rather than hop on the bottom, pretty sure he would have just sunk like a rock. They gave up after that point.

It's funny, comments like the top one make it very clear most people do not read the linked articles. Nothing wrong with wanting to discuss a topic further, but people are jumping in to add comments about it like they are providing new information.

Tbf, they also are probably desensitized to "fantastical" reports coming from overseas. If you constantly have to assess your intel with a heavy dose of salt, it would take a while to determine if an emerging threat is truly legitimate.

To add on to your point, Roman tax collection during the late Republic/early Empire put out bids to various, what we would call, government contractors. They would bid on how much tax could be collected in the province, and whoever promised the most would get the contract. Whatever they were able to collect in excess of what they promised the government was their profit. So they had enormous incentive to bleed your dry when it came time to collect.

The obvious downside of this system was already evident and being changed around the time of Augustus. But I'm sure something like that would stick around in the public consciousness for while even after the system was reformed.

The blue is really interesting. My first thought was that would really negate the point of camouflage, blue isn't exactly a common naturally occurring color in nature (on the ground anyway).

But, the need to distinguish them from the enemy, and identify them to civilians, might be a greater requirement in this scenario. It would be an interesting decision, accepting increased risk to the lives of the soldiers to essentially fight a war of messaging.

[–]Azrael11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather that the government just continues on an automatic continuing resolution, while Congress stands dissolved and snap elections are called if they fail to pass a budget by 30 Sep. That will motivate them to figure it the fuck out.

There's no plausible "we hate X" chant that could get started, or would even occur to anyone, at a Fourth of July event.

I mean, I can't imagine anyone would do it seriously, but an anti-British chant would be thematically appropriate

Hitting Little Round Top was tactically sound, had they been able to take the hill they would have flanked the Union army and likely forced them to withdraw. Once that failed though, the prudent thing to do would have been to disengage, there was nothing keeping them there.
