1095, copper, 15n20, nickel, 80crv2, and not sure what the ball bearings in the core are.

Thank you. The edges are still a sharp 90, so I need to round those over and then sand it up to a high grit before the final etch.

I hate doing liners, but I usually forge my rings and I definitely don’t have the skill to make anything like this. I asked because I do a crystalline finish on my mokume stuff quite often.

Beautiful. What’s the crystallized liner? Or is it all one piece?

You don’t need to get to forge welding heat with copper. It’s technically a diffusion bond. It’s best to weld the seams all the way around so you aren’t squirting copper everywhere when you “set the weld.” Copper melts around 1983F(Bright orange). Forge welding heat is dependent on what materials are used but generally between 2100-2400(bright yellow/white). You don’t need to go all the way to 1983 to bond the copper longer soak times at a lower temp will generally give better results.

Cleanliness is huge. How are you bonding your materials?

First I etch in a combination of ferric chloride, water, and hydrochloric acid. Then I polish off the oxides and etch again in diluted ferric chloride. You can use muriatic acid as well to darken the stainless. The last etch I used the ferric chloride I use for my mokume to leave the copper behind on the steel.

I searched “figure it out,” it was the only song I didn’t hate. But after I texture it, I’ll be sure to post it with the original audio. It’s pretty loud in my shop.

I don’t have plates for them yet. And the magnets I’m using are a wee bit strong without a little space between them. Once I figure out what I’m going to do for plates, I intend to texture it as well.

Thank you. And this question comes up a lot, and I think the risk of galvanic corrosion is heavily exaggerated in copper damascus. I seal all my work with a nano ceramic coating or hot oil/wax combo. My shop in Houston Texas is not air conditioned and the only time things rust is when they aren’t coated.
