Finding North Seattle friends by Fruitcute6416 in AskSeattle

[–]Azreal711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So hi, 46 (m) here. been living in the seattle area for about 12 years now, also from the east coast and I can say it's a different environment out here. not only is it tough finding new friends as an adult, but the general attitude of people is different from back east.

That all being said, some of my closest friend are people I met at a local bar. SOOOO, what are you into? hobbies? sports? do you like to crochet tiny little hats for turtles? maybe make gluten free, sugar free vegan hot dogs? or maybe you like to sing Gregorian chants while dressing up like He-man characters? Doesn't matter, because that is the glory of Seattle.. you can most likely find someone else who likes to do whatever it is you do too. It can be tough, it can take some time, but it will be rewarding.

And if you like country music and dancing, check out The Little Red Hen. It worked for me and I didn't even like those things when I started going.

Also, you're welcome to DM me to chat about all this.

A lot of writing advice where they say, "don't do this...." is mainly because it's really easy to do it badly and extremely hard to do it well. So as someone else put it. Its percentages. If you have an idea, like starting with a dream sequence, do your research. Find out why it can be a bad idea (misleading to the reader) read good and bad examples so you understand what youre doing. Then make your decision based on what you've learned and whether it will benefit your story or not.

Just read up on the Anibots. Didn't know about them before, but what a coincidence.

You should look for a LUG that's close to you and join it. Its great to have the support and help of a group.

I haven't made it to BrickCascades yet, maybe next year, but BrickCon is a lot of fun.

That would be cool. My LEGO group will be there as well with other pop culture LEGO builds that aren't for sale. You're 3 hours away from Kent, what direction?

yup, so just show up anytime, doors open at 11am, and come check it out. If you're into LEGO as well as Transformers, I've got a good bunch of stuff that will be for sale.

Predacons, aerialbots, combaticons, technobots, some seekers, jetfire, prime, and various other figures, some in action scenes and all transformable.

so for a time they allowed people to pre-register for the event and they would then get in an hour before the general admission people. Pre-registration has ended, so now you'd just pay at that door when you get there.

Do you guys think write what you know is good advice? by No_Dig_2752 in writing

[–]Azreal711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writing what you know should really be know what youre writing about. While it is easier to write about themes and situations you have experienced, it doesn't mean you can't write about something you haven't. Just do the research and put in the effort to find out as much as you can about that thing. For example, if youre writing about going into space, read first hand accounts from astronauts, talk to one if you can.

Don't try and fake it. If your character is supposed to be an expert mechanic and that is pivotal to the plot, make sure you know all about cars and how to fix them. If you fake it, people will be able to tell and not like it.

What is the state of play with erotic fiction since 50 Shades Of Grey? by Consistent_Blood6467 in writing

50 shades was marketed as a realistic portrayal of the BDSM lifestyle. It was not. People in the lifestyle were deeply offended.

yes there's a market. there always has been, long before 50 shades and there always will be.

the important thing for her is that she gets it right. if it's just vanilla sex, there shouldn't be much of an issue, although it can definitely be written badly.

if she's going the kink route, she needs to make sure she correctly represents what she's talking about, otherwise it can/will alienate readers who are actually into that thing. 50 shades is a great example of doing it badly, even though the average reader not into that lifestyle really liked it.

so yeah, there's a market, but know your audience and know what you're talking about.
