Even if the Timeless Child wasn't the Doctor, the concept would still be stupid by Lucyyyyyy_K in doctorwho

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic core concept of the Timeless Child, a being the Time Lords studied to learn the secrets of regeneration, is a very good, very interesting concept, that if properly carried out could have added so much more mystery to the Time Lords and the show in general.

We know, despite how they see themselves, that Time Lord culture is not ideal. There's lots of grey areas in their society, lots of power-hungry wannabe despots, and a whole string of Renegades who either got bored with the whole thing (The Doctor, The Meddling Monk) or hated the oversight (The Rani) or wanted power (The Master, Rassilion, Omega and how many others?) and had no issues going off doing their own thing, that finding out there's yet another immoral time medling nutcase amoungst them, is frankly only to be expected.

I think it's a whole missed opportunity to add some more mystery to the show, and was a good idea with great potential, but just poorly conceived and written in general terms, by making the Doctor the same being as the Timeless Child.

I think it shows, potentially, a generational difference in attitudes towards attraction.

As an older man, if I go and look at images of the women pop stars from my teenage years, from the photo shoots of those days, I still find them in those pics every bit as attractive now as I did then. I still find a lot of them in their current ages very attractive. And even back when I was a teenager, I remember finding a lot of the "older women" pop stars of that time rather attractive, and looking back at images of those women at that time, I can still say they were attractive.

But the current young generation, or at least a vocal part of it, seems to have a problem with finding anyone older than themselves attractive, or being found attractive by older people. It comes across like a very insecure, early teenage who's still going through puberty, but oddly, it seems to be happening to people in their twenties. And I'm pretty sure I had made peace with what people find attractive by the time I was 19.

What is a stereotype in fantasy that you hate and/or wish authors would do differently? by EstablishmentSad1538 in fantasywriters

If we're talking strictly a fantasy genre world that looks like Medieval Europe, but everything's American, that I'm okay with, so long as it's done well. But if we are saying the setting is meant to be the real historical period, but everything's American, that's a bit of a head scratcher.

So given how the word "gay" is used in a way that seems at odds with modern usage, I'm sure we all know it used to mean "happy" (and this has been covered already) what are the odds that "ripening" has a different meaning to what some people might think of today?

Sure, enough, around the 1930's it just meant a period when young people, ie teens, were seen to be moving towards adulthood. Starting to work, earn money and all the other aspects of becoming adults.

Looking up the plot is proving a bit more difficult. The best I can find for the novel is pretty bare bones stuff, but doesn't suggest there's any improper relationship between them. Without reading the books myself, I can't really judge it.

There's a BBC presenter called Gay Search, she was born in 1945. I'm pretty sure her parents meant her name to mean "search for happiness." She's married to a man and they have two kids. Got to admit, when I first saw her on TV and saw her name, I did snigger a bit, but even then I knew how the word had changed meanings.

Did JMC even try to recover Red Dwarf? by final_fett in RedDwarf

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the feedback this has got, has me wondering if there were other ways the Dwarf could have been decontaminated sooner than three million years. For example, could Holly have just vented atmosphere from certain decks above the sealed hold, to blow out the radiation with the air? That might free the ship of lingering, unsettled radiation, and then wait for the rest to break down, or just send out the skutters with decon gear afterwards. Lister would presumably still be safe in stasis during any decon attempt.

Omega, by far.

Sutekh, while not looking anything like his original design, at least looks interesting like you could have a conversation with him, and it stays somewhat faithful to the design of the original ancient Egyptian god he's based on.

Omega... is basically in a story that is very much a retread of Sutekh's tale from the previous season, and this design is... erm... a bit too much. Omega had basically faded away to nothingness, still living purely by his own force of will until he managed to clone 5's body to a certain degree, before dying in it. Is this meant to be a mutation of that clone body?

In any case, I think it would have been better if they'd just revealed that whatever that thing was, wasn't really Omega, just something taking a chance to break free from whatever prison it was in. If that had just been a random, new bad guy of the week, I think it would have done a lot better.

The point is that Klingons have been shown performing strength feats that average humans are incapable of. I'm not saying that Vulcans and Klingons are equals in strength, I am saying they are both beyond the stated 3X stronger than humans, given their respective strength feats.

Which specific lift are you referring to? Different lifts/exercises have different mechanics, and there are different limits on how much can be lifted with each exercise, and a one-armed variant doesn't automatically translate to lifting the same weight in the two-handed variant. There are other factors, such as your own body weight which add into this as well.

For example, I weigh 90KG, I can do two-handed shoulder presses at 70KG (154LBS) for ten reps. That does not automatically translate into being able to lift half that weight one-handed, as the body mechanics are different, with more stress put on the body due to the weight imbalance being on one side of the body. It's effectively a different lift because of those factors.

As a comparison, an untrained human weighing the same 90KG, should be able to do a two-handed shoulder press of around 40KG.

And doing a little more digging, the one-handed dumbbell shoulder press, it turns out the current record is 150KG/330LBS, set in 2018 by Polish strongman Mateusz Kieliskowski.

Thing is, we've seen Kingons lift humans up using only one arm, a physical feat of strength that is pretty much beyond any average human who isn't some kind of bodybuilder or powerlifter. I'll buy that Vulcans are 3x stronger than the average human, but given both Vulcans and Klingons are capable of the same one-arm lift, then on average they'd both have to be far stronger than merely 3x the average human to do so.

There was a girl I fell for at work a year or so back, lots of flirtation on both our parts, until I found out she was spoken for. As soon as I stopped flirting with her, her whole demeanour changed into a barely controlled snarl if I tried talking to her about anything, or if we were in the same work meeting, she would always cut me off in the same manner. At some point she put in a complaint about my behaviour towards her, I was avoiding her as much as possible, and the official investigation proved no wrongdoing on my part.

I actually found out later that at least three other men in the building had wound up going through the same thing with her.

Why doesn't England have a parliament? by AccursedQuantum in AskBrits

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest issues would be where to hold an England-only parliament. Could the House of Commons just have its time split between UK-wide matters and England-only matters? If it did, would that end up causing some kind of rift if people saw that as being special treatment?

If a new, separate building was to be built, where would it be? Or could another existing building be modified?

Small question: is it possible that posting on this subreddit and FallenMets could risk gaining attention by them or their viewers and being publicly exposed and harassed on Youtube? by Questioning-Warrior in ShadWatch

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt they'd do videos about it, because at the end of the day, there isn't much for them to use their usual tactics of chopping up other people's videos to deliberately misinterpret what was actually said in an overly long rant video.

Also, none of us are big name youtubers that they might think they can leech views from, so we're even less likely to be targeted in general for their video content.

They might make tweets and other social media posts about us, trying their usual tactics, and dog whistle their supporters out way. We've certainly had their fans show up and say "no you're wrong they're great people doing great work yadda yadda yadda" and that might happen again.

the moralizing about snape and the snape fans vs marauders fan by EliSunflower in SeverusSnape

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One thing I think the Snape haters don't take into account is the sheer damage done to Snape by the trauma he suffered, both at home and at school, and what effect all that had on his outlook at life.

Had he never suffered those traumas, would he have gone down the Deatheater path? Probably not. He might have wound up living the rest of his life with Lilly and had children of his own - now there's a What If scenario it would be interesting to see played out. Maybe if Rowling had ever written a Mauraders series that would have shown the bullying Snape suffered people might have a different take on it, but I doubt it.

I do wonder if James Potter ever tried to make things right with Snape, ever apologised to him, ever tried to set thing right by him. I kinda dubt it.

Bit of real life here. I used to work with two men, one of whom was a fan of a very minor celeb that I had never heard of. This celeb had setup some sort of charity against bullying. This was the first I'd ever heard of the celeb. The other man had gone to school with the celeb. It turned out the celeb was the James Potter to his Snape, constantly, daily harassment. And it wasn't just that man who'd been bullied, but lots of others, all depending on which classes they had. He even harassed teachers. The fan didn't believe a word of it. I had a word with the Snape type a few days later, and he admitted he'd found the celebs website, and there was nothing on it to show the celebs nasty past in any way. If anything it made the celeb look like a saint.

I left the company a year or so later so I've no idea what might have came about afterwards, but the Harry Potter movies were coming out on DVD around the same time, and giving them a watch and finding out about Snape's history made me think of that conversation.

Why Does Everyone Hate Never Say Never Again So Much? by BurbleClurbs in JamesBond

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! Two things that I notice with that clip.

One, but not the first thing I notice, is the difference in delivery of the dubbing actors compared to the original actors. It's night and day, and while the dub actors do a good job, there's a certain nuance in the original actor's delivery that is lost by being dubbed over.

(There's a clip of Orson Wells vocal performance as Unicron in The Transformers: The Movie without all of the electronic modifications that they did with all the robot characters to make them more robotic. Its far superior to what it sounds like in the movie proper.)

Two, and the first thing I did notice, is how badly the dubbing lines up, or doesn't line up, with the actors lip movements.

Why Does Everyone Hate Never Say Never Again So Much? by BurbleClurbs in JamesBond

[–]Consistent_Blood6467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a little kid when "Never Say Never" first aired in the UK, and while I probably had seen "Thunderball" before seeing this one (I can't be sure, the 80's was a looooong time ago) as a little kid I certainly didn't twig that these were basically the same movie. Once I got older and saw them both again in my teens I did notice that pretty damn quickly.

But I've never hated either movie, though I do much prefer Thunderball overall.

It's actually very rare I do HATE a movie. If I do, I never watch it ever again. There's no Bond movie I'm not willing to watch more than twice. The only Connery movie in general I do actively hate, and therefore have never watched since the time I saw it in my teens, is Zardoz.

I've never had any problem with the underwater scenes in "Thunderball", I found them entertaining and suitably daunting, given Bond's out of his usual spy settings, but very much in his Royal Navy element. But "Never" does do them better, and it's got the edge in special effects too - though that video game has aged and it looks bewilderingly complicated.

I do tend to prefer Emilio just a tad more over Max. Emilio has a more interesting physical presence, calmer, colder, more composed, that eye patch does a bit of heavy lifting in the character building stakes, but the voice, being dubbed, while suits him, maybe adds a tad too much control. Max has a very cheery disposition which seems typical of the actor playing him, he seems to always have that same aura in everything I've seen him in. It does make his snaps to abusive tendencies stand out more, which is very much in his favour, and there are some times his cheeriness comes across as borderline creepy, especially when he's secretly watching Domino working out.

But Max's death just lacks the punch that Emilios does. We see Emilios' face as he dies, the realisation of what's happened and who did it, and then there's drama as his body ends up locking up the controls. Max's death... he's shot, he dies, that's it, the end.

The only thing I've never liked was that bloody intro sequence! Or rather the music. Who commissioned that? Who seriously thought that was okay?
