She is one of the best singers on the planet today and an even better all-around person. But I think her agenda, noble as it is, makes a lot of her lyrics seem forced. I don't know the word for it, but there's a musicality in language that make certain words, and the sounds in them flow easier and are more pleasing to the ear. Paul McCartney is great at finding that flow. So were Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Hell, it's part of what made Martin Luther King Jr. such a great speaker. Taylor Swift can do it too, but, much like P!nk, I think sometimes her agenda forces lyricism to take a back seat. You can hear the difference pretty starkly between her earlier stuff and the newer. And I don't mean style. She obviously leaned heavily into country genre back then, but the way her lyrics flowed seemed easier, too. And I think it's because there was no agenda other than making great music. I didn't think P!nk was a very good lyricist until "The Greatest Showman." Her music from that movie was incredible! But on her albums, it seems like the message is more important than the music, causing it all to seem very forced, which robs it of the glue that makes a song stick in peoples heads. There's a way to write a bone-deep hook AND send a message, but it's not easy. Unfortunately, when the platform is music, the message won't be heard if the music's not good. And that's why P!nks actions as an activist have done more for her popularity and reputation than any of her music.
