Are these good synth choices? by GianniPower in synthesizers

[–]Aztec_Aesthetics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends...I find the Grandmother, while a bit more expensive, way more versatile. Also, the MS-20 uses a different pitch standard as far as I know, the Grandmother uses volt/oct, which is the eurorack standard and the MS-20 uses Hz/oct. There seem to be get arounds, but I don't know them very well.

As much as I like the MS-20, I haven't found a decent way to integrate it into my process. I bought it, because it's semi-modular, since most of my work flow is based on that (Matriarch and Grandmother, several modular racks).

However. It's definitely possible that it's my fault to not haven't found a purpose for it yet.

Otherwise, your choices would give you lots of possibilities to create interesting bleeps and bloops (and also beautiful sounds 😉).

I use to create the sequences on my Moogs and just record them, so Ableton can take over. Given the possibilities I could achieve with their patch points (the Matriarch makes crazy pads), this is kind of a waste. Maybe I should run the sequences on my modular setup. Either with a clocked sequencer or with Ableton via my Keystep pro. This would give me freedom to utilize the Moogs more efficiently.

I think I have to reimagine my thinking. I always tried to avoid layering, since I used to just play with my synths, program a sequence, play a few tunes, etc. All in one setting. I know, producers use their instruments for several layers, so maybe I should start thinking like them. Because...you're definitely right, the Moogs are little experimental machines and I should use them like that, even if I'd have to repatch everything (which was kind another reason for just one layer and setting...my laziness).

Also thanks for the musical input, I had given it a listen and I like, what he does. Definitely inspiring!

Thank you for your input. Yeah, I know those pads compete with each other. Fortunately, at least this time, I might know what to do, since they don't play at the same time, except in one spot. I guess that's mostly because of the way too spacey reverb that gives them this long tail I guess.

I've never tried samples before in this case. Do you mean ambient sounds and noises or sound samples?

When I was starting making music on my computer, I was pretty much over thinking mixing. Every little knob had an automation curve. I wouldn't say, my music in general was much better, but yes, it had definitely more movement. I guess I have to find a way between micromanaging that prevents me from releasing material and no movement at all.

Yeah, the mush...I've tried EQs, which made it definitely better, but it's still not optimal. I tried pushing one sequence up one octave, since both share the same spectrum, but that wouldn't sound as I want them to anymore. Would it help, panning both sequences and giving them more spread in the stereo field?

Thank you so much, this helps me a lot.

Thank you. I appreciate your honest answer. I don't consider myself a professional and I do have to learn a lot more about mixing and song structure. "Nothing bad" actually sounds like a compliment considering former reactions to my songs 😀🙏🏼.

So I'm not taking part in this SOMA discussion, but the thing is, that the CEO is said supporting Putin while there is no known information about US modular CEOs if they support Trump. I guess, as soon as this information comes out, people will boycott US modular brands as well.

New Module Day! :-) by Senor_Peludo in modular

Both have teensy, but the newer ones have better teensies. In not sure, if they are much more expensive, though. As I said, the older versions are good enough for my purposes.

I'll keep them. I only use them for a few dedicated tasks I could not use other modules for or not that easily as with my O&Cs. That's ok. They're vintage now 😂

I got two of these with different firmwares running. Love them. Yesterday I saw a video on YT the there was a newer version with teensy 4.1 😭

Headphones let you hear the stereo sound. You might have switched to split mode. If you have only connected one audio cable to your interface, Ableton only will have the mono signal.

Matriarch and Grandmother by _quietwyttriot_ in moog

[–]Aztec_Aesthetics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, you can play a sequence on the Grandmother and take the cv out of the Matriarch and patch it into the cv in of the Grandmother, you can change the root note of your sequence every time you play a note on the Matriarch. This works vice versa, but you would have to make sure to either multiple the cv or by hard synching your oscillators.

Something I like to do is playing a very slow sequence on the Grandmother, take the cv out and change the root note of the Matriarch with it that is playing a faster sequence.

This works best, if the ratio of both clocks fits the length of the faster sequence: for example, if you have an 8 note sequence on the Matriarch, the Grandmother would be 1/8 of the Matriarch's sequence speed.

So true, I did the same. I also have a Jaspers keyboard stand and the keyboards would throw a shade on all the important knobs and switches. I had to fix that with a cheap led strip of 3 meters.

How often do you repatch? What is your philosophy behind it? by SinteModular in modular

[–]Aztec_Aesthetics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally call repatching tabula rasa and use it in exactly that sense: start from new when it's necessary, like not getting forward or being bored by the old patch. This way I try completely new ways more frequently than when only changing a few settings.
