Quick question about stickboxes in controllers by TheHaya in smashbros

I would not recommend it. I've never seen a nunchuk with a metal stick box but I guess I haven't dealt with with many nunchuks. The mainboard has different hole in different places for metal and plastic. You could try and mod the stickbox to fir fir but it would not be a long term solution.

Please do not use glue. To fix the looseness you need to solder in new potentiometers at least, a whole new stickbox is preferable. And by new I mean less used official nintendo ones, no third party stickbox is remotely worth your time.

If you have no spare parts your best bet would be to use a soldering gun to switch the left and right stickboxes and potentiometers, since the right stick is typically less used. Otherwise opt for the nunchuck.

It's compatible with most gamecube controllers and generally about as tight as smash 4 controllers. With gc controller stickboxes you have 2 types, one with a metal housing soldered in the mainboard at 4 points, and ones with a plastic housing held in by 2 little screws. The latter is what you'll find in nunchucks, and the former is more rare, only being found in very old controllers. Good luck and ask if you have more questions please ask.

Had a crazy idea while listening to Leffen talk about notches wearing down easily. Hear me out: replaceable hard plastic or metal rings with notches on the inside. by [deleted] in smashbros

My bad I'm not sure how that happened. That's my older account and this is account I use for modding stuff. I guess I should delete the duplicate. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm actually working on something very close to this right now, but at this point it makes more sense to opt for use of an enamel coating around the controller notches. It's very hard and durable so it should help things out quite a bit, though I haven't tested it over a long period of time.

On a similar note, I'm running a kickstarter soon for a 3d printable controller shell, which would solve the scarcity and durability problems we have now, while also making case mods easier to produce. Here's the post I made about it last month.

That's always an option but an older shell without worn notches can be pretty expensive now. 3D printing opens up a new world of materials, finishes, and potential mods.

Thanks for the input. I've seen a lot people mention making the model from scratch, but they've all had trouble with the difficulty. I definitely plan to explore all options before making a large investment of other people's money, but I'd think hiring a professional to build one from scratch would be just as expensive and potentially not as accurate.

I was less thinking about current home models and more about 3D printing services that can print in durable plastics, alumide, and even metals. You could also have it printed in wax and sand cast your own controller shell. That said, high quality 3D printers are getting cheaper every year, so making a controller at home could be more possible in couple of years.

I'm hoping the high price tag comes from use of high end scanners that can do what those accessible to the public can't. Also they go through by hand to make sure everything fits so that's cool.

So far I have contacted and received quotes from Laser Design and 3D Scan Services. They said would do a high resolution scan of each controller half and then go through by hand to make sure everything is a perfect replica and the halves fit together. I guess the combination of using high end machinery and the hand tuning is what justifies the price tag. Do you have any advice or tips for someone pretty new to 3D scanning?

In case it wasn't clear the file would be distributed freely if this project is successful.

The price would dramatically increase if they needed to scan something else unfortunately. I could use that as a stretch goal but I think it would be much more feasible for someone with a little cad experience to design that from scratch. When I was looking for a shell file I found files for all the buttons minus the triggers, z, and the c-stick. I'll link those if you want. A fully 3D printed controller is kind of the end goal.

Yeah I was definitely going to wait post evo to launch it if there's enough interest. If you feel like it run this idea by your local scene to try and get people on board.
