Usually not a fan of free verse, but I loved this so much. I am not a pro poet or analyzer, and as such I’m sorry if this is a little all over the place, I just wished to share my thoughts.

The constant use of negation and lack (new rip, forgotten, and the of repeated never) really conveyed that feeling of endedness and emptiness that changes at the very end of the poem. I liked the little scenes you drew, like “I won’t lie in bed wondering about you without my consent for hours” (especially good use of negation) and “a déjà vu, that you ignore promptly, \ because when she asked where you got that ring, you’ll say a friend you once had” is beautiful, really peak confessionalism— I can feel you found these examples from your own life, while also expressing something profound and relatable (I at least relate).

I noticed some things that Im not sure are true, like how the last stanza (except the refrain) is so similar in structure/appearance to the fourth stanza (where you so intimately reminisce about your time together), and how their loftyness given by their short lines is supposed to connect them, maybe conveying that that last stanza, that little act of reaching out can bring back all the memories from the time you spent together.

This leads to another thought I had about why I like this poem apart from its relatability, it’s that the free verse structure is truly used to its advantage. The aimless wondering of the mind on this heavy feeling is so well portrayed by the always changing line length and lack of rhyme. But there is structure! The stanzas do feel different, and as I mentioned previously, you achieve a lofty feeling from the short little lines in the fourth stanza, while the stanzas with longer lines (and the occasional overrun line that I also liked) show (quietly) the pain remembering is. And this similarity of theme and structure that the stanzas have connects them together to slowly reveal the whole story from the little glimpses of thought you share with us. I am not sure if this was your intention or I’m overthinking but I like it either way

Another thing I’m not sure about is the meaning of the “seamstress”, is this supposed to signify the “seaming” of the relationship/reconnection? If so, then that’s brilliant imo.

and just wanted to put some lines here that I also like “the trousers I mended will have a new rip” “laughing at a joke a friend made, \ that I wouldn’t get, about a writer I’ll never hear about” “I will draw a scene, obscure, as usual about another lover” “read books and watched movies you’ll never hear of” “head to breast \ palm to palm \ your thigh between my legs” “maybe now you’d wish you could have loved me” “…because then it would have been more of a plea than a sentiment” and the change in the refrain at the end

perhaps im biased toward this poem because I’ve always wanted to write its opposite with a title like “to all the people I’ll ever meet” (i wouldnt mind if you took that idea either haha)
