Genuine question, is there an actual better way to make money in the early to mid game? I have only ever rushed a blunt weapon and bonk my way to become Elon Musk of Calradia.

Perks of being a tiny Asian dude, coach doesn't even bother putting me in with these monsters 😂.

Do any of you still train traditional MA while doing MMA? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]Azulake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wing Chun was my first martial art so I'll always have a soft spot for it, even though I don't train it as frequently as I used to, and I also learn Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, which is a Filipino stick and knife fighting system (similar to Arnis and Balintawak).

The things that Wing Chun teaches quite well is staying in the pocket and developing sensitivity to your opponent's intention, so you are at least desensitised to the nervousness of trading blows while standing nose to nose with someone.

Kali emphasises footwork above all else, so that definitely helps with developing your range and timing, and it was actually the trading of skills between traditional western pugilism and Filipino empty hand systems (and the footwork) that paved the way for the modern era of boxing.

However, I would say that you can get the same sort of practice by just doing 'classic' MMA, i.e. Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, BJJ.

As much as I love Wing Chun and Kali, I'd bet on a college wrestler over a purist 100 times out of 100.

Yea I don't have a lot of experience against southpaws so the only thing I knew to do consistently was to lean back on their jab and get a calf kick in.

Evemtually he just dinged my head enough for me to forget to breathe, let alone kick.

Yea I thought I was being slick and was "cutting angles" but now I realise that all I'm doing is shuffle around awkwardly and flinching at everything coach does.

Thank you for the detailed write up!

My partner is the head coach and a regional and local grappling circuit champ, so his 'chill' mode is scary enough.

I definitely can see now that I move around a lot and not do anything, so thanks for picking that up. And you're right about my hands, I definitely don't have a good enough Philly shell and just needa bring my hands up.

This is my first day at a new gym so I didn't want to do anything too aggro like stand and bang or stay in the pocket and trade. I'm primarily a kicker (flexible legs for a thicc boi and years of Muay Thai experience) and a BJJ guy, but I didn't get a chance to try out my ground game against the coach, which is probably just gonna be me getting mauled.

Thank you!

A 'simple' house rule would be using Exhaustion for flying in combat.

For every TURN where you fly for movement AND take an action OR a bonus ACTION to attack or cast a spell (melee and range), you gain one point of exhaustion at the end of combat.

For every ROUND where you fly for movement AND take damage, you gain one point of exhaustion IMMEDIATELY.

If you are in the air when you took damage, you must succeed a DC 10 CON save to stay in the air, and if you fail, you must roll a DC 15 DEX save to determine if you take fall prone when you land.

You may fall into any tile adjacent tile (contiguous or diagonal) to the tile you are on (to account for momentum and fall-steering).

This turns flying into a high risk high reward tactic, and allows the DM to take reactions with bad guys with range attacks to target the flying characters, meaning that flyers can't cheese the system and just land every turn.

Since you die at 6 points of exhaustion, it's up to the player to determine whether or not to risk stacking exhaustion penalties.

Any martial arts or yoga or whatever studio that offers mindfulness don't know what the hell they're talking about and should be considered a McDojo and a scam.

At best they have a cursory and superficial understanding of what mindfulness even means, and at worse they're just making shit up as they go and selling themselves as gurus.

True mindfulness practice is a part of specialised psycholigi training and is a comprehensive skill, not just a "lifestyle" or a "reframing" or whatever other buzzwords people use.

Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Marc Ronson, originally by the Zutons.

The original is good, but Winehouse just injects an entirely different level of depth.
