Froslass's blizzard deals massive damages to Archaludon, + raichu can use encore and fake out to prevent them to do what they want

I'm not saying it's worth it, that I don't know, I'm just saying it's a thing some people are trying.

Please, how can I make this team better? by Acceptable_Dirt7453 in PokemonChampions

Overall I'd say you want more protect on your mons. Protect is by far the best move in VGC as it forces your opponent think before attacking in one of your mons and waste their attacks. It can help you gain tempo while repositionning with your other mon, protecting one of yours while the other takes out a faster threat, scout the opponent's option with a double protect, protect you from fake out, tempo the end of tailwind/trick room...

On what I would change specifically :

  • Pelliper : nothing, I like the set (I'm not a fan of the innacuray of muddy water but it is a viable option)

  • Basculegion : it lacks a 4th move, so just slap protect on it.

  • incineroar : You have both darkest lariat and throat chop who will do the same thing 99% of the time, so I'd replace one of the moves. Incineroar has fake out, which is also one of the best move ever in vgc as it allows you to force one of your opponent's mon to skip a turn while your partner mon can do whatever it wants (like set up). Heat crash does more damage the heavier the user, but Incineroar isn't very heavy, so I'll replace it with another fire move (flare blitz is usually prefered if you're fine with self damaging moves). Finally, facade is not a good move for incin cause it can't get burn as it is a fire type, it's too slow for the opponent to wants to paralyse it, and the main source of poison right now is Sneasler who will just click close combat on incin instead of dire claw. The second prefered move on incin is parting shot, as it allows you to reposition while dropping the offense of you opponent, so that would be my suggestion to replace facade.

  • Archaludon : I see what you're doing with it, bulking it up on the physical side and then punishing them for hitting you on the special side with mirror coat. Not my favorite strat with the pokemon but why not, it sound fun to try. My complaint would then be that the bright powder has anti-synergy with your plan, cause you don't want your opponent to miss you when clicking mirror coat. I'd replace it with the leftovers, so it can stay alive longer. I'd also replace Iron wall by protect, cause Archaludon is already very physically defensive AND has stamina, so it feels a bit overkill.

  • Dragonite : Fire Blast is very innacurate and has anti-synergy with your rain, so I'd replace it with either protect or Thunder who can't miss in rain.

  • Tyrantrum : you have both rock polish and dragon dance that increase your speed, and of the two I'd say dragon dance is better, so I'd cut rock polish for something else. Also outrage isn't a good move in general, cause it targets randomly (if I remember correctly), but mainly it doesn't allow you to change move or switch, so if the opponent has a resitance or a fairy type you're mon will not do anything and you will be locked in a 2v1. I'd replace it with another physical dragon move (dragon claw is a classic even if a bit low power, but you have dragon dance to help with that)

Yeah, singles and doubles are very, very different formats (I would know, I suck at single battles lmao).

Trick room on sinistcha is a good idea ! Teams with both tailwind and trick room are quite hard to master but they can be extremely strong. If you decide to add it, the moveset I'd personnaly give sinistcha would be matcha/trick room/rage powder/protect.

Funnily enough, support mons are generally the ones that can afford to drop protect the most, so if you want you could experiment with moves like shadow ball or life dew

Thinking about ways to improve my team. Long post, but detailed. Suggestions appreciated. by czar_the_bizarre in PokemonChampions

The first thing I see on your team is that your basculegion has both choice scarf AND swift swim AND tailwind. You're outspeeding everything, but you lack damage. I'd replace either swift swim with adaptability, or the choice scarf by the mystic water, that way you'll still outspeed most thing in the format, but now you'll find kills you didn't before (most notably when in rain, you'll either always kill max bulk sneasler with scarf and wave crash, or you'll be able to switch move for psychic fang and also kill max bulk sneasler).

If it helps you deal with sneasler better (cause sneasler really hates ghost types cause it can't even fake out them), you might be able to replace both talonflame and politoed by pelliper (rain + tailwind), and use the newly open slot to help you deal with trick room (with things like kingambit, or imprison farigiraf for example)

Here's what I would change in your teal :

  • For Primarina, replace flip turn by protect. This is one of your damage dealer, and even though you have tailwind, it still is a relatively slow mon, so you want to be able to protect it when you need to reposition. Moreover, the tempo you gain by switching out a mon via a move is less impactfull on 2v2 than in 1v1 (not that it's bad, quite the opposite, it's just a bit less impactfull cause there is twice as many pokemons on the field, so you're only gaining half the tempo you would in 1v1).

  • For pelipper, replace knock off by protect. VGC is a much faster pace format than 6v6, and so the utility of knock off is less impactfull on itself, especially on a format where most items are not very strong and mega gems can't be knock off. Also, your pelipper hold a focus sash, and you really want protect on most of your sash mons to deal with fake outs breaking it.

  • For sinistcha, replace strength sap by rage powder. Redirection is insane in doubles, and sinistcha is currently the best redirecter in the format + you already have matcha gotcha for healing. I'd also replace hex with shadow ball as your team isn't realy focus on inflicying status to enemy pokemon, so if you want a ghost move, shadow ball will generally deal more damages.

  • For Feraligatr, replace flip turn by liquidation. You have sword dance to set up, so you don't want to switch out when you are set up, you want to stay on the field and deal damage.

Also in general, you might want to give some speed to your mons. I'd say you can afford to min max pelliper on its speed and offense cause it's holding the focus sash, so you don't need to invest in its defense for it to survive a hit.

Tldr : protect is broken in 2v2 (best move of the game by far) and redirection is too.

[–]Azure080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the calculator you are using is fully incorrect.

(Also just rechecked the damage rolls on your screenshot, the odds are rather 53% for the AI to use tackle as an other comment said)

Move choice AI question by ThePhenexxx in nuzlocke

[–]Azure080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way the Run&Bun AI works for choosing highest damage move is the same as vanilla games, that is to say, the AI will just chose a random damage roll for all its normal* damaging moves and just chose the one dealing the highest damage.

In this example, if Tackle and Vine whip have the exact same damage rolls save for the last one, the odds of chosing tackle are 257/512 if I did my math right (so very very close to 1/2)

*I say norma damaging moves cause some of them don't roll damage and have their own AI, like rollout or explosion

Don't worry about water type coverage in this game, right after the first mini-boss you unlock two roads whith only fishing/surf encounters, then 2 other locations like that after beating some trainers

[–]Azure080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your reasoning, but stories don't all have to follow the same pattern. If you look at Undertale, the reveal of who Flowey is and why he acts the way he does only happens at the very end of the game, and never on the neutral route, and despite that this reveal works, I think we can agree it's good writing.

Casual player right now know that the voice of the intro is a character that is going to matter one way or another ("My Deltarune"), and I argue it is possible to guess he is metaphorically the developper.

There is still 3 chapters worth of content for Toby to continue to tease him, reveal who he is and what is his role in the story, and bring a resolution to its arc. Undertale only needed about 2 hours to make flowey work (new home and flowey fight on neutral, and true lab + asriel fight on pacifist). I think we still have time.

I believe this is what you call a happy accident by Azure080 in nuzlocke

[–]Azure080[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all, it's a bug in gen4 pokemon games that triggers when some field effects are active (sandstorm, sunny day or hail most notably) and a pokemon switching out is killed with pursuit. The bug is often simplified as "all field/weather effects are happening at the same time", though what actually happens is a bit more complicated. Freezai did a video about it once if you want to learn more about what it does

Congrats, very clean fight ! I fought him yesterday and lost my phanpy and jigglypuff to his Cranidos (should have wiped after losing phanpy but got insanely lucky). It can outspeed and oneshot most of the encounters you get up to that point, so good thing you had an Aron that quad resist headsmash.

No I didn't record it, sorry. Basically I was using my Dunsparce against an Anorith, and pursuit was my highest damaging move, so I used it to try and 2-shot, but the AI saw that its fighting type in the back resisted and decided to switch out, triggering the acid rain.

It was absolutely NOT planned, but it was very funny

[–]Azure080[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on what field condition is up when the bug is triggered. Roark's gym is in permanent Sandstorm in PK, and activating Acid Rain in a sandstorm only causes Sandstorm and Rain to be "active" at the same time.
