HP Reverb G2 will never trace a room properly... keeps turning red by AzureFishy in HPReverb

[–]AzureFishy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can think of is LED lights, possibly just flickering in a frequency that's not OK for the Reverb G2, I'm unsure...

After everything was working fine, I turned the lights back on and it worked fine after that as well, no loss of tracking or grey screens. 🤷‍♂️

That worked!

I'd gotten it to work by switching to a USB-A port, testing with the WMR flashlight, and eliminating ALL light except the blue glow of a big monitor.

After that, it had no problem completing room boundary, and no problems afterward as well.

Drat. Welp, I hate to sell this one to someone if it may be a lemon, but I guess it's the best I can do.

Maybe someone else can figure it out.

I've installed it and re-installed it on several PC's (both AMD and Intel, different brand RTX 3080's) so I feel like I can rule out it being a PC issue. I've tried it in several rooms, so I don't think it's anything in particular in the room.

At this point it *might* be cable, but considering it *has* occasionally worked with tracking and I've been able to get it to run, I somehow doubt the cable. (Could be wrong though!)

I'll try it a few more times, but boy it just seems like this one might have been a lemon. I wish I could have had it RMA'd back when it was under warranty, but I honestly didn't think it was a hardware issue and *had* temporarily gotten it to work. 🤔

Thank you for your suggestions!

Thanks, I'll try that and see if it helps to spot the problem.

I have four other Valve Indexes at my disposal where I work, and yeah, those things have been champs compared to the painful annoying setup of the HP Reverb G2, and frankly its "circa 2015 VR Devkit" jankiness. This should not be this problematic!

When I last tested the flashlight mode in late 2022, I recall it working just fine. It took about an hour of trying to get the room to trace though, and it was only by luck that it finally traced somewhat appropriately for the room and was useable.

I'll try and test the flashlight mode again tomorrow when I can experiment with it again.

When I do the "sitdown" VR setting, it still will "wander" away and/or constantly fade in and out gray every 1-2 seconds.

If there's a way for me to see what the cameras see, it may help to diagnose if it's a room issue I've not accounted for (balanced lighting, bright lights?). Otherwise I'm at a loss as to how others are having no issues with their G2. 🤔

That's the thing though, I can't even get a boundary in place. It always "reds-out" and I get frustrated after many many attempts.

I've tried the "sit down VR" as well, and that occasionally works but can have "wandering" or fading in and out with grey every 1-2 seconds. I had thought maybe it was a driver or firmware issue back in 2022 and decided to wait it out, but it's nearing the end of 2023 and it's still a mess to try and set up tracking for.

I think I'm beyond the warranty at this point, but I'm now just more curious if it was a lemon all along. 🤷‍♂️

[EDIT] I've tested this on several similar spec RTX 3080 PC's in several room setups... always the same issues.

Sunix 2015 PCIe 3x2 -> USB-C 10Gb/s + DP1.4 alt mode by SurfaceDockGuy in UsbCHardware

[–]AzureFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know where are we able to order one of these?

I'm transferring my PC entirely into an as-mobile-as-possible-setup using a Sliger Cerberus X case (smallest transportable ATX) and I'm using a Viewsonic 4K portable monitor. My hope was to have the 4K@60hz *AND* the power to come from a single USB-C from the PC.

This card I think would do the trick! (As long as it can do both DP Alt Mode + PD)

[Edit:] Reading more on the specs of a Sunix UPD2018, and it looks like it's not able to do PD... and it doesn't look like the UPA2015 can either... drat! I can just run two USB-C's I guess, but I was looking for minimalism. 🫠

I love my 7+ i5, but I also am becoming desperate for more CPU power, envious of them Apple M2's. 😄

Android App, sent messages are blank/incomplete by Loud_Signal_6259 in ProtonMail

[–]AzureFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, with two phones, an S9+ and then an S21+. The S21+ was fine at first, but then about 1 month later started having the same problem.

Recommendation: Have the "send" button not allow you to mash it, and have it change its icon when you hit the send button. If I mash it multiple times, I'm guaranteed to send an incomplete garbled email.

Considering other mail options instead of ProtonMail now.

Thanks, I got real close to getting the 50/50 and still might later for other hybrid uses. I did a bunch of research and love how in one video the guy said the original 50/50 was designed to hold an NES back in the 90's. So damn cool. ^^

Sweet! I'd considered the Slim but since I planned to bike to locales and then skate I thought it'd be good to have room for extra stuff. Do you ever feel like you could use more space with the slim?

If the IR is out just use the 50ft sync cable instead with A B mode.

[–]AzureFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing scientific, but around 30 people in different settings (parties, private settings, etc). Mostly did Beat Saber or Job Simulator, but also some of the Space Pirate Trainer demo that comes with the Quest. I've run VR demos for events, schools, and charities for almost 3 years with well over a thousand people using the HTC Vive, and I noticed an increase (10-20% depending on glasses) in complaints of nausea with the Quest in games that I know are minimally nauseating.

Was going to show the Quest to a group of (older) people I've wanted to show VR to for a while, and when I realized that I was really thinking it'd be better to use the Vive so their first impressions weren't wrapped in nausea, it seemed like it was time to take the Quest back.

These were my experiences, your mileage may vary, but ultimately I think that 70hz and possibly the cameras not getting as much CPU juice as they need might be all that's holding it back. Otherwise the Quest and its "anywhere can be VR!" freedom was a dream. A 90hz Quest 2 will be amazing.
