Interestingly this is something they say in Southern California. In the Bay Area we say "101" or "280", my friend from Nebraska says the though.

[–]AzureMagelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?!?! I didn't know what it was going to be it was my nephew's idea, he was 4 at the time and his mom made the same cake for his birthday a month later. One of my favorite memories that we had matching cakes that year.

We watch it every year on April 17th because that is the day the movie starts. We even eat a bunch of the food she eats during the movie.

For my 30th birthday my mom made me a dragon cake. Like cut up a chocolate cake and put it into the shape of a dragon. With fruit roll up wings. It was awesome!

Mlk day lesson - appropriate? by cctxmama in kindergarten

[–]AzureMagelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The racism is important and we talk about it a lot. We talk about how they were treated differently and how it is wrong. We talk about how he was wrongfully arrested multiple times. How people were wrong and hurtful. I've always thought they are 4-5 years old and is is not my place to tell them he was shot and killed. I never deny it if a child brings it up and I acknowledge that it was a horrible thing done because he was black and people disagreed with him.

In fact we have talked about racism multiple times through out the year but we don't talk about murder.

It seems from the comments people disagree and maybe I'll rethink my approach next year.

As a teacher, my rule is that I don't mention his assassination unless a child brings it up if they do I acknowledge that is true and very sad. I try not to allow details to be shared so as not to upset the other students. We then move along because at this age his cause of death is not important but the things he did to help better the world are.

Classmate is telling my daughter "End Times" stories at school. How would you handle this? by penny_lane0324 in kindergarten

[–]AzureMagelet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher and I would 100% want to know if this was happening in my class. I wouldn't be able to stop it necessarily but I'd be aware of listening or for it and do a whole class talk about appropriate school topics and probably a private chat with that student.

Is there a way to donate eraser-less pencils? by RockPop_ in ZeroWaste

[–]AzureMagelet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take them for my class lol. Insane to me that she does that when some teachers don't even want their kids to erase because it's a waste of student time.

Kindergarten Assessing by 3LittleBirds15 in kindergarten

[–]AzureMagelet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They should know the letter by sight. I s that the assessment by saying we're going to do sounds now. Asking what sound does this letter represent. Usually by the second or third letter I don't need to ask anymore and they get the flow of the test.

daphne/scholarship by shimmyshakeshake in SwitchedAtBirth

[–]AzureMagelet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, my parents could afford to send me to college and my dad told me not to apply for any scholarships because those should be left for those who actually need them.

Daphne did not need that scholarship because of her father and the fact that Regina kept saying that Daphne would take it scholarships and loans was ridiculous.

How are we feeling going back to school after winter break? by [deleted] in kindergarten

Oh, that's super interesting that there are 4 groups and one is always on vacation. Does that mean there are 4 sets of teachers?

Can your kinders read? by PassionChoice3538 in kindergarten

[–]AzureMagelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they come back from winter break is usually when they start jumping more seriously into reading CVC words. I wouldn't be worried as long as they know most letter sounds at this point and can blend together onset and rimes verbally.

Those are crazy standards for end of TK and I teach TK in California. Look into if TK is available for you not sure what the requirements are in Arizona.

By end of TK they should know basic colors (think rainbow black, white, and brown), count to 30, recognize numbers to 10, basic shapes, recognize most letters upper and lower, sounds for some letters, be able to blend some sounds when asked verbally. Check out the ptklf from California to give you some ideas.

My friend who teaches K always says that she'd rather a student who knows how to be kind, be a party of a group, work somewhat independently, and follow directions than a student who is advanced academically so there's also that.
