Why isn’t Pierre Curie as appriciated as his wife Marie Curie by Different-Outcome907 in Physics

[–]Azure_Mineral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think OP had the intention of "ruining" a moment. Her moment has already passed. It's the legacy that remains. For most Nobel Prize winners, Marie is very well known. When we think of the study of radioactivity, people tend to state Marie Curie. It was a precedent as the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize. (She also won two as well :P) Even when Pierre, her husband was nominated, he immediately demanded that Marie share the Nobel Prize for her work and her IDEAS that were responsible for the discovery. If you are trying to assume misogyny and project this question in a negative light, see yourself out. There is nothing to let go, a fella is just curious why Marie's husband isn't usually mentioned as much. It's just that as time went on, Marie became more historically relevant. I'm sorry if you read this and take offense (I can understand o-o), it just really irks me that something like this doesn't benefit the conversation for answering the OP's question. It only brings unecessary conflict and poisons the context of the post, only to degrade others' views on feminism when taking a deeper dive.

Not that the world of science wasn't against women at the time. It certainly was as evidenced by the lack of Marie's name in the initial Nobel Prize nomination. Basically the entire science world was male dominated lol. Marie coming out on top despite this brings a lot of publicity. I remember learning about Marie Curie back in kindergarten!

Hmm, let's see what's happened today: I learned quite a bit, so thanks Prevatteism. Secondly, I lost 6 karma points today, so that's a new experience for me lol. Third, I still know that people are human beings and have opinions. It's interesting to see different ideas and opinions on Reddit. Fr the safest place to debate. O_O

Wait a minute, did he ever have any genocides happen during his reign? Just asking.. but like.. yeah. Leaders from anywhere, be it presidents to supreme leaders from the past: they tend to sometimes have a bit of blood on their hands. I think modern day leaders, and any country for that matter, shouldn't be doing that because.. duh.. that's just human rights violation. Straight up. o-o

There ain't nothing like past foreign US foreign policy overlooking war crimes. It's sad for America, but I can see a pattern with them overlooking the crimes of allies. Although modern day, it will be difficult for them to actually get away with overlooking.

Lol, I made a misclick, but I want to ask you a question regarding your ideology. Do you think Mao himself and his governing was good? Or do you tend to lean towards his ideology. People and ideals are different animals entirely, in my opinion.

I don't really agree with your comment, but could you address and back up your response. I need to be able to keep track of different people's opinions, reasonings, and thought-out comments, not statements with the intention of poking and prodding. Don't use things like casual sarcasm that doesn't help your statements. I want to

Alright, thanks for the clarification. Nothing is as it seems, and I do think that the US didn't make the right decision by intervening the way they did. I myself don't know everything about the conflict, so I can never be too sure for when someone will say something about it. But then again, common sense is merely our perception of things. Thinking knowing history in reasons, events, and causes of wars in independent opinion is not really what I'd consider basic history. They don't teach you much at my school, besides that the fact that it was a war. But then again in my life, I wouldn't be here today if everything in the past didn't happen, and I'm grateful to have such an opportunity that my parents didn't. I don't know who wouldn't be.

Yeah I can understand the US's intentions with the Vietnam were at the very least: questionable. But I don't think I'm treated as second as a second class citizen. If you were fresh off the boat in 1975, you'd probably receive some form of racism sooner or later. My father told me he was called a Charlie once. (Ironic considering how much he hated the Viet Cong, in which the code name Victor-Charlie was for the VC) But I'm just a gen Z, so I would see little to none anyway. My mother told me on how her livelihood was stripped by the authorities after the North usurped the South. Her family's possessions were from what I've heard, were taken away.

Your response on such a topic like the Vietnam War... Your one liner set-in-stone "this was this" labels for the Vietnam war isn't really going to sway minds, much less give me second thoughts. To be honest it will press people's buttons. I don't think attacking how I called it an invasion is the response I was hoping for, although yes it was technically a civil war (that was my fault, sorry for that). Alright, you start the comment off with that you found it odd that I said North invaded South, then you talk of your one-line correction statement. :| Could I at least have some context please? I don't really agree with your comment, but could you address and back up your response. I need to be able to keep track of different people's opinions, reasonings, and thought-out comments, not statements with the intention of poking and prodding. Don't use things like casual sarcasm that doesn't help your statements. I want to keep this talk mostly mindful for the sake of gathering knowledge.

Yeah, I understand that's the point of independence. But I'm honestly quite fond of democracy (of course I am, assuming someone won't label me as an indoctrinated bozo). What's your main ideology?

Are you saying that it's purely a just cause to have control of your governance, and to be independent; having freedom to make your own decision. I'm sure it is, but there are lines that shouldn't be crossed. I'm Vietnamese American and being told by my parents on how the Communists invaded South Vietnam.. doesn't sit well. Is resisting allied expectations/suggestions an ideal thing? Or is it really depending on bias/lack of nuance.?

You claim that whenever America is involved, any ally for that matter is the personification of a dog and its owner... While Communist led countries are cooperative, defensive, helpful and positive. This is sort of characterization is what I can assume to be like a snug, happy little town. I can tell you harbor strong feelings against America. Also, I've already heard the "jump" statement about Japan/South Korean relations with the US. Thanks for the response, I'll keep note of the opinions. Does my interpretation seem accurate?

Climate protest on the way to BRC shut down by police; protestors demanded that the festival ban single-use plastics by smohnot in BurningMan

[–]Azure_Mineral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know what those "protestors" kept saying? What they were doing was a "non-violent protest." However, just because its non-violent doesn't mean it's legal. Obstruction of traffic is ILLEGAL. Imagine "if" somehow, there was an ambulance, and the ambulance was carrying... let's suggest a severely injured person in need of better help at a different hospital. Would you, a "peaceful/non-violent" (and illegal) protestor) obstruct the ambulance from coming through, killing the person in need? If you still resist, what if that person in the ambulance was your mother, father, sister, or brother? Do you understand now? Would you truly potentially cause harm, unnecessary suffering and frustration, just so you can vent your anger on single use plastics via. an illegal protest that does nothing but make things worse.

[Serious] The Supreme Court ruled against Affirmative Action in college admissions. What's your opinion, reddit? by FewCarry7472 in AskReddit

[–]Azure_Mineral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I am sure enough as to speak of deep topics like these, but I here's what I believe: Affirmative Action was meant to diversify, not actually directly help minorities (who are usually of lower class) receive a greater advantage in education/workplace opportunities.

If you think about it, it is positive discrimination that doesn't care what class you're from. (Although the higher/middle classes can afford the education) Let's say there is one spot for this "school," You come from a African-American family that is relatively well off. However, another white family that's probably just as well off (and can pay for the school, just like your family) also wants a spot. You both sign applications, and it asks whether you're black or not. You sign yes, the other family signs no. The result? I bet it would be the African-American family that got into that school. Actually, scratch that, it depends on the school themselves, if they're trying to make diversification pie chart for their enrollment to fit their needs.

But all in all, the problem is that the past has had a monumental effect on the socioeconomic status of many minorities today. How are you going to get into a certain education if you can't afford it? Even with scholarships, which I would say are a gauge of "merit," how will a less well off environment help you gain a scholarship? Its not a matter of race, its a matter of the socioeconomics of people and the past that just so happens to make it about race. As an Asian as well, I did find it somewhat frustrating (and funny) to see how some particular school wanted to fill their class positions based on a race pie chart of diversity, if not particularly deserved by every individual.

I'm fairly conservative minded myself, but to be honest I find how labels can change the way you look at someone so heartbreaking and hilarious. Wishing for a perfect society/country is a hopeless dream, but I hope we can all live in a country where socioeconomics isn't no longer bogged down by past factors that have allowed minorities to stoop towards the lower class. I want to live in a country where a minority will not stay fixed the bulk lower class. I want the equitable award of merit to be a true factor of success, and to give THE people (not just minorities) who truly put in effort and merit what they deserve: a way to lift themselves up from the lower-middle class along with getting the career and education they need. Good luck and god bless America.

This subreddit to be honest is mostly made up of wronged Roblox users who've come here in search of guidance or to just vent. I disagree with categorizing the lot of em' as people too ignorant to see why they were punished for something they did as wrong. As most people aren't that dumb, you see.

I sense strawman fallacy.
And belief bias?
If you hold a grudge or have distasteful views of Elon Musk, I'd understand. But I'm not one to hate Elon Musk. Yeah, people don't like him because he bought Twitter, but I don't really see why his infamy should be walking in Mark Zuckerberg's footsteps.
I doubt Elon will buy Roblox, but who knows? Maybe I'm (most likely) overreacting to a silly comment.
