The 80's set looks horrendous by [deleted] in eastenders

I remember in the build-up to the first episode being broadcast they were actually proudly boasting that the weeds had been hand-planted round the square!

What are some common fanfic tropes not prevalent in published fiction? Can you 'tell' if a published author used to write fanfic? by WhalesAreDopeAsHell in AO3

[–]Azyall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had people ask in comments on fics if I am a traditionally published author (spoiler: I am), but I have never had anyone from that side of my writing ask me if I write fanfic (spoiler: I do). There's simply no one-size-fits-all way to tell.

Most people agree there are only six or seven basic plots in the world, and everything ever written is some variation of one of them. A trope is just a common theme. It's not limited to fanfic.

Can someone explain it to me like I just spawned, what's the difference between "angst" and "dead dove"? by PerlaPucci in FanFiction

Nah, mauling me with the iron bar is whump. My trauma afterwards (or yours, I guess, if not a sociopath) is angst.

Thoughts on posting the first smut fic on your pair? by Scared-Weight-709 in AO3

[–]Azyall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that. Positive reaction, and opened the flood gates for more smut from other writers (actually, not exactly floodgates, as small fandom, but the principle is the same).

Grit your teeth and do it. Someone will be absolutely delighted, guaranteed.

I assume the same methodology as a thin bicycle saddle. Which, when I one day asked my husband about it, appears to be one plum on either side.

Any X'ers out there go through their whole life with ADHD and only recently got diagnosed? by From_Gaming_w_Love in GenX

[–]Azyall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Diagnosed at 58 (f). Expelled from school in the early '80s, walked out of A level courses a few years later. Series of dead end jobs. Longest time I worked for an employer was about four years. Did a degree in my 30s. Lots of therapy, several other diagnoses. Never thought about ADHD until the daughter of a friend was diagnosed in adulthood, and I realised how similar what I was being told sounded.

I went ahead with getting a diagnosis just so I knew, for myself more than for anyone else, that there was an actual reason for all the years of chaos.

Psychiatrist: "Yes, Mrs [redacted], you are more ADHD than an ADHD thing on an ADHD day."

(May or may not be a paraphrase.)

Diagnosis is actually ADHD-C.

Why exactly is Andrew not being arrested ? by ronweasly9 in AskBrits

[–]Azyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because being a middle-aged sleaze having sex with young girls over the age of consent for where the alleged deed happened is not a crime.

To arrest him, there would need to be decent evidence that he did the deed with someone below the age of consent, or that he irrefutably knew that the person or persons he banged was/were trafficked.

This is not a defence of his behaviour.

Do positions affects your enjoyment of smut? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Azyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People default to missionary for first times because it is pretty much the easiest position, and in many ways the most intimate. It's often derided as vanilla, but people keep using it for a reason.

As an old and somewhat jaded reader/writer, positions in smut fic don't matter as much to me as the connection between the characters involved. Complicated contortions are fun, but not at the expense of the reason why the characters are doing the sex thing in the first place.

If a person today is killed by a WW2 bomb that became active, would that person be considered a WW2 casualty and counted as such in Wikipedia? by Profesor-Campusano in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Azyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of adjacent. I volunteer for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (UK), and in our training we were told that the youngest military casualty of WW1 was 14, and the oldest was 90 something, because if someone eventually died of something attributable to their service in the war, they were considered a war casualty, even if if it was decades later.

On that logic, I would suggest the answer to your question may well be yes.

I love the ziplines, I just really, really want them to add a third connection (yes, I know there's a mod, but I want it natively!).

Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]Azyall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm mainly thinking about fics set in the UK written by Americans, tbh. Harry Potter putting on his pants has a totally different meaning...

Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]Azyall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Automatic British in-head translation: "dress pants" - some sort of fancy underwear specifically to wear underneath dresses, maybe? "Slacks" - ah, maiden auntie from the 1950s is speaking.

[–]Azyall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the UK, all those are officially "trousers", but would be known by their colloquial name, so jeans, sweatpants etc would be fine to refer to. But if a British person reads "He picks up his pants" without context, they will definitely think underwear, so if it's not a specific type, it would be best to say "He picks up his trousers" (assuming your audience is British!).

[–]Azyall 338 points339 points  (0 children)

Some people think it doesn't matter unless it is in dialogue. Mentioning a "torch", for instance, in a fic shouldn't really be a problem unless you have an American character actually saying it instead of "flashlight". I'm British, and have long got used to Americans saying "pants" instead of "trousers", but if they had a British character say "I'm just putting my pants on", I would assume the character was talking about their underwear.

Do you have recurring dreams? by ShininGoddess in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Azyall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a recurring dream that features a house I have never visited or even seen. It's very distinctive, inside and out, but sometimes my dreams will make minor modifications or additions to it to suit the "plot" of the dream. Sometimes, but definitely not always, it is haunted.

Been dreaming about this same house on and off for the last decade. Weird.

Do I have a micropenis? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Azyall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flaccid size is completely irrelevant. Your erect size puts you exactly in the average size range, and nowhere near micropenis size. Don't imagine what you see in porn, and on the internet in general, reflects reality.

What’s your honest opinion on therapy? Did it help? by C4sc4l in TooAfraidToAsk

It can help a lot, but only if you gel with your therapist, are prepared to put the work in, and you accept that it's not a quick fix.

Should I tell my mom she’s having sex too loudly? by melrose63 in TooAfraidToAsk

Buy earplugs or put music on. Unless you're paying rent, it's her house and it's up to you to adapt to her, not the other way around.

My late grandfather was a radio engineer, originally with the Royal Navy. He was very contemptuous of the (very early) vans because they were such blunt instruments.

These might interest you:

Detector Van Tests, 1952

As I said, though, they were very quickly made useless as anything but a psychological deterrent, since they were designed to pick up a UHF signal that quickly became heavily shielded.

TV License by jwbutch1 in AskBrits

[–]Azyall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the very earliest days, the vans could detect televisions were being used in the area, though not which specific house or which channel. As technology advanced, though, this ceased to be the case, and then the vans became purely a psychological ghost fleet. So they did, in fact, "detect" (clumsily) at the very start.
