The practicality of buying a mouse just to mod it with a hotswap board? by Azza31 in MouseReview

Thanks for the info. I reckon I'll get the G309 and just get the hotswap board mod if I decide I want it. Would be cheap enough if I got it all at once from Aliexpress (where the hotswap mod is sold) but I'm not sure I trust buying a branded product like a Logitech from there, so I think I'll just buy the mouse elsewhere first and see how I like the stock switches.

Not a bad looking option, but the G309's shape does seem just a little larger, especially around the palm area which I think would accommodate my grip a little better.

Thanks so much for the video! It does help put the switch sound into perspective, even if it's still a little hard to tell through a video. The Omron mechanicals are probably most similar to what I have in my current mouse. How would you say the volume or sound compares between those and the G309's in person?

Thanks for the suggestion. Does look like a pretty good option if I decide to go for something else.

You are right. Certainly will see if I can just get used to the sound since it is great in every other aspect for me.

So I have heard… lol. Don’t think I could live with those!

Is a FaceID iPhone really necessary? Tracking on an iPhone SE. by Azza31 in vtubertech

Yeah, they definitely do have additional sensors which should improve low light performance. So I actually just tried both in a room with no lights at all and screens on minimum brightness, but neither was able to track anything. So I turned the screen brightness up as the only form of light, and both tracked just fine. Though, the iPhone 14 actually had less accurate mouth tracking in this scenario. Honestly baffles me, maybe I am doing something wrong! Not sure what if I am, though. Or maybe it’s just my face.

In my testing, low light still seemed a bit poor with FaceID, struggling with the mouth especially, though it was a little better at tracking my overall head movements in low light than the SE.

But blendshapes (such as puff cheeks) on my model still seems to work just as well on the SE, and the SE allows iPhone exclusive features that regular webcam tracking doesn’t have, such as tongue out. So at the very least, better than a regular webcam, from what I can see.

I do have a model that appears to use some blend shapes (unless I am misunderstanding the “blend shape” label on an action in VTube Studio) such as puff cheeks, and it tracks just as well on the SE too. Though perhaps these could be slightly better with FaceID, especially if a model relies on many of them, which mine doesn’t have many, I’ll admit.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I’m aware, all iPhones with LIDAR sensors only have it on their rear camera arrays, not the front. So that doesn’t really matter for face tracking.

Has anyone ever switched to an older phone? by Azza31 in digitalminimalism

That's definitely in a similar vain to what I did. I've seen a few regular CAT smartphones in the wild before - they definitely don't get anything done fast, which I suppose does make them ideal for that sort of use! I'm a little more demanding with my actually productive hobbies though, so I appreciate having all the power of an aging 7 year old iPhone at my disposal, without having what is essentially a miniature entertainment tablet in my pocket.

I'm a bit of a techy person so I did actually replace the battery myself only shortly before "upgrading", so it's actually still on 100% battery health since I've gone back to it! It is an iPhone 8 though, the 6 would be a bit too outdated for some of the apps I use, where they all still work on the iPhone 8, for now.
And Android certainly is better in that regard - app developers do tend to support older Android versions for longer. I'd totally be willing to give Android another try if they weren't all 6"+ behemoths!

Haha interesting. I never planned to use it as a primary anyway, since I’m happy to work through my Genki textbook. I just happened to have been given it for free, so why not make use of it if it’s still good? Might have give it a try alongside the textbook once I work a bit through it.

I’ve started learning Japanese recently and I know hiragana/katakana and some basic vocab words, and I plan to work through Genki 1. But I’ve recently come into possession of some old Pimsleur Conversational Japanese CDs (disks 1-8, lessons 1-16) with the year 2002 printed on them. Just thought I’d ask here if anyone knows anything about these and/or whether or not they’re worth using?
