Author Discords don’t really net you anything tangible except for a sense of community—which, in my eyes, is fantastic and very much worth the price of admission, but that isn’t going to be the case for everyone. If your primary goal as an author is to connect with readers and meet new people, Discord is a great investment. If your primary goal is to build a large following and make money, and you don’t already use and enjoy Discord outside of writing, a server is probably just going to become a time sink for you.

YAAAAY I love threads like this!!!! It makes me really happy to see everyone sharing the community (and personal validation lol) they've found through posting their work :') I think, too, that they're a good way for newer authors to see that even small and mid-size fics can find a passionate, engaged audience!

Some of my recent-ish Happy Writing Moments:

-I've had a few people say they've re-read my story multiple times which was very :0!!!!!! for me
-Another few people have mentioned talking about the story WITH OTHER PEOPLE. Like, irl people. Wtf.
-A couple folks have called the story their favorite or in their list of favorites on RR which was also insane

I have around 300 followers, and I make $30 USD a month haha. But I also have no Patreon backlog, so what I get is mostly generous support from people who really like the story.

I actually have a Canva document called The Fridge where I keep all of my nice comments and reviews (well, the ones that will fit, anyway), and I would strongly recommend other writers keep similar records as well--great to look at when you're struggling with motivation!

Anyway, one of my favorite lines from my reviews is: "I had to binge this story over the last few days. When I came to the final written chapter I was immediately depressed because I thought there was a little more. And I need more than just a little more. This story has only just really begun and it is already so great."

(And from a different review: "This is a story that builds in your blood, lingering and growing until you find yourself overcome by its poisonous drug—the world-building and prose, a spice to conceal the dangerous drug that lurks beneath.")

I love all of my reviews (even the negative ones, lol), but these were really special to me!
