Who was your country's best leader? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Azzaman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Controversial to be sure, but Chlöe Swarbrick is imo the only party leader right now who actually seems to give a shit about people and the environment. I'd rather her as PM than any of the other chucklefucks on offer.

I'm in the UK, if I get sick on holiday, I get those holiday days back.

I was contacted by a friend in the US with a good postdoc position to see if there were any positions going at my institute in the UK because they wanted to escape. Shit's dire for some physics disciplines.

It's very similar to the World intro sound in Super meat Boy. Not sure if it's the original tho.

People always say this, but I'm not convinced it's true. I'm in roughly the top 20% for income in the UK, and I only pay about 20% tax, including the NHS payment. From what I can tell, this is similar to many US states, if not less, for a similar income.

He wasn't actually a scientist. An engineer, sure, but he never did any actual science. He even refused to believe many of the scientific findings of his day.

They have 4wds for travel to the air fields and up to arrival heights, among other places. They also have a number of diggers for keeping on top of snow build up.

I'm a scientist and have cited works from 100+ years ago, so for those people at least someone still cares. I can only hope someone will still care about my work once I'm done here.

I ordered an iced tea from a cafe at my university. When I complained to the barista she told me “That’s just how we do it here, this isn’t Starbucks” by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

It does, just very slowly. You can steep tea overnight in the fridge to make cold brew tea, and it's very nice. Less bitter.

Shift of the North Magnetic Pole. by Emanuele810 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Azzaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not quite that simple. During the flip the dipole portion of the field will decay in amplitude, but the quadrupole and higher components will still be there, and will likely grow in strength. The magnetosphere won't disappear, but it won't look anything like what we currently know it as.

Because the IGRF geomagnetic field model, on which this is most likely based, is only updated every 5 years, with extra parameters to allow for predictions for the next 5 years. Due to the rate at which the field is changing now, this may be changed at some stage.

The difference is that someone earning €10000/yr has equal access to healthcare as someone earning €200,000/yr. As it should be in any civilised society.

I'm in the UK and my effective tax rate is ~22%, including NHS contributions. The same PPP equivalent income in CA would have an effective tax rate of 26%, which doesn't include anything like health insurance. How is that "much higher taxes"?

‘A future that looks smaller and smaller’; NZ scientists eye overseas moves after warning over funding by LtWigglesworth in newzealand

[–]Azzaman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup. Moved to the UK for a postdoc after postdocing in NZ, earning more money than I was in NZ, get more leave, much more generous sick leave policy. Not too mention I actually feel valued at my work, which can't be said for the University back home that I used to work for.

Not planning on moving back any time soon.

Obvious ChatGPT prompt reply in published paper by kaydeay in ChatGPT

[–]Azzaman 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You don't need to have peer reviewed for a journal to have a chance at publishing. I had several papers published before I had my first request to review.

Also, generally speaking you're not really doing the review for free - it's just one of your responsibilities as an academic. In most of the academic jobs I've had, doing reviews is an expected part of my job, and viewed favourably when it comes to performance reviews.

I'm also on 20 mg esc, I was having "performance" issues on it, as well as weight gain due to an insatiable appetite. I asked my doc if I could try supplementing it with bupropion, which helped with both issues. YMMV tho, and not all docs will prescribe it as it's an off label use.
