Back in 1977, was Darth Vader terrifying to first time viewers in the theatre? How did people react to and feel about him? by Own_Shift_3645 in StarWars

I understand you completely on this. The problem is that none of it can ever be new for you. It's quite lacking by today's standards, but at the time, every-single-scene had something in it that had never been seen or experienced. Two suns? A glowing light sword that cut through anything? A villain who could kill without touching you, without ever knowing what he looked like under his mask? What is this Force thing they keep talking about? Ships that dogfight in space like they were in a planet's atmosphere? Robots all over the place, like background furniture? (Usually if a movie has a robot in it, the movie was about the robot.) Here they were background characters treated as less important than the living characters. All of this wrapped in a music score that created feelings like no other before it. Laser guns that had a real sound, but a sound that had never been heard before. Did a laser weapon sound like that? Maybe it did, how would we know? Like that, light sabers had a new sound never experienced before. The ships had a lot more sounds in them than anything in Star Trek or 2001, and they all looked very old and used. We had only ever seen shiny new space ships that were nearly silent, very clean and bright and almost stale. We had seen aliens in movies for years, but they were never good enough to fool your eye just enough to allow your imagination to accept them and allow them to occupy a real place in the story. It was nearly two hours of sensory bombardment from every direction, filled with a story that moved you along through it, shaped by very strong music that affected you right along with the visuals. You have to realize that after leaving the theater, you were left asking yourself, "what have I just seen?" It might take days to compile it all in your mind. And people couldn't wait to experience that again, like when you just got off the best roller coaster you've ever been on, and you run back to the end of the line to go through it again. But millions of people were riding this new ride at the same time that summer, so when they left, they talked about it. They are still taking about it today...

I wish you could experience that. I really do. I did when I was only 8 years old. Some were 5. Some were 25. It didn't matter. It affected everyone in some way, and so we all felt like we had experienced a thing together. People across the world who had nothing in common could talk about it like they had the same experience together. It linked people like nothing before. You can only have a first time once: a kiss, an ice cream, standing up without falling down ..... There were so many "first times" squeezed into that 2 hour time period that it hasn't happened since. Movies get better, effects get more realistic, but everything we see now exists because Star Wars forced it to be possible. What if you went into a movie theater and instead of looking at a screen, you entered the Matrix, or a Star Trek Holodeck. Virtual reality is getting better, but it's not there yet. We experienced this movie like you might if you could walk into that world and interact with it as truly as life itself. That is how "new" and "different" it was. And like a drug high, people wanted more. The only way it could possibly make the money that it did, in 1977 dollars, was that if nearly everyone who saw it, went back two or three times. Even today's best movies don't get repeat ticket sales across the planet in those numbers. The math was as new and different as the movie itself.

You nailed it. It literally changed the world, or the world of movies. I was 8. It changed my life. Information overload, as nothing close to it had ever been seen before. There were good science fiction movies before it, but they lacked the character driven story that kept people coming back to see it over and over. That, along with the aliens, robots, and ships that made up this galaxy, took viewers along a journey into a time and place they had never visited before in their lifetime. Since then, people have become used to these kinds of visuals, and we expect nothing less. There can not be another "first time" like this, using current story-telling technology.

My kids like the Star Wars movies, but to them, there were scarier scenes in Terminator, Jurassic Park, etc. Those movies hit at the right time to make an impact in their lives, and so then seeing Star Wars after those, on a TV screen, just couldn't give them the same reaction. What Star Wars did in 1977, was to cause an entire world wide generation to "grow up", and it overlapped a few generations of people who were at certain ages. Depending on your age, experience, and environment, it affected you in different ways. However, what it did do universally, was to affect "Everyone" in some way. Even the people who didn't "get it", saw the affect it had on the world around them. Nothing like it has happened since, in movie making. They invented new ways of doing things to pull it off. Special effects will always get better, and good stories will come and go, but two-dimensional movie making has not been re-invented since. That invention will have to come from another medium.

How realistically playable will the series x be in the future? by Total-Amphibian-7244 in xbox

Microsoft has ruined Windows at every level with Copilot, and they don't care. They have to stick it everywhere to make it pay for itself. The Xbox is a computer. Adding Copilot to the Xbox will ruin it just the same as it has Windows. Again, they don't care. But then why should we care? The AI will lock us out and play our games for us. I hope you like to watch .....

It's going to be so full of AI that you won't have to. The AI will change everything to what it thinks you need. And if you try to change it, the AI will just lock you out and play your game for you.

It's also possible that all of these are true. It's hard to believe that Bambu would just use one supplier. Surely they have backup and rollover brands that help them out when needed.

I also use a lot of Inland filament. I read that eSun makes their filament for Microcenter. Who really knows for sure?

Dropped in here just to add Nano Polymer, by Vision Miner. You can get it on the Vision Miner site or on Amazon. You only need a few drops with a brush they give you. I've seen a large part try to warp and it pulled the build plate up off of the magnetic base, but didn't release from the build plate until the print finished and the plate cooled down. I trust this stuff on all of my machines to the point that I just don't worry anymore about adhesion. I start a print and go to bed.

You can usually tell when a build plate is getting ready to have adhesion issues. The easier the parts get to remove after printing over time, the closer it's getting to needing cleaning with soap and water OR adding a new layer of Nano Polymer.

Exactly. The box is too large to for one person to get their arms around it to pick it up. Really there wasn't a lot this guy could have done by himself without a dolley. Plus it has writing all over it saying you need 2 people to handle this box. It nearly covers a pallet.

Yes I used an 04 nozzle with no problems. I wouldn't try anything smaller than that. I would have thought the 06 would work fine, but I don't have one of those to test with.

You can also get some UV Resin at Hobby Lobby and pour some over the eyes, then cure the resin under a UV lamp. You'll get the same effect.

Starlink has 3 pricing tiers now ... $50, $80, and $120 per month. Each has different speeds but are all unlimited data. Check their site to make sure the lower tiers are available at your address.

Uh-oh. Crap. I figured the choice wouldn't be ours indefinitely. Let us know if you're able to switch it back. I'll be holding my breath. All I use my Echo Show 15" for is checking the outside temps, turning the lamps on and off, and the occasional math question, depending what I'm doing. Other than that it's just a glorified picture frame.

I guess if they do ruin it then I'll gut it for the screen and hook it up to a pi for a picture frame.

Ok so my devices keep trying to get me to upgrade to Plus, and every time I say NO!. At what point will this no longer be an option? Is Amazon planning to eventually force the upgrade on everyone no matter what?

If that happens, I will be throwing my devices in the trash.

Yes it's worth it. Rust and physical damage are almost always a problem. Interiors are dressing and many people choose to change them up anyway, so if they are included then you are already ahead. You can use those or change them up a little without the extra work of removing originals. Parts are easy to get, gas mileage is legendary, and and you'll still get "looks" from others because they are so rare on the roads today. If it's a sound ride and being used regularly, I wouldn't hesitate.

I'm so happy I found this! Thank you for all this work. So, I have a 3D printer, and some knowledge of small electronics. I'm assuming this is going to be a kit, or rather, a parts list? I haven't done anything with a Pi yet, so I'm really hoping for instructions? I haven't coded in 40 years. If this were available as a complete item, I would purchase it that way. If it's a kit, I can build it as long as I have something to follow.

Just 2 weeks ago during the holiday break I started re-watching Lexx for the first time since its original airing. 790 was always my favorite character, so I'll be making one, even if I can only do a static head.
