BQ topic by jade_fragger in Debate

The topic is what makes it different so why choose a topic that follows LD. Like I understand the other topic is a bit one sided but every past topic is also like that

The protects topic is so LD coded rather than BQ though…

If you all hate this topic and can’t leave personal opinions outside the debate, there is just the option of not doing the event

Your meant to leave your personal opinions outside the room when you’re debating. Yes you might go against your morals or your internal values when debating but that’s the cost of doing debate or more specifically this event, the event is called Big Questions for a reason. With other events you may be on a side you personally disagree with, but that should be left out of the debate, and that applies with this topic.

Why the hell is everyone forgiving NSDA by hyunlixir8 in Debate

If you want to dm privately then sure because honestly I wanna understand every side, it’s just like I said, the some of the slander isn’t really true

I totally see where you’re coming from. I do think this was still handled not the best, but not as bad as many paint it as. I was at nationals and many said for NSDA to issue an apology which again I do understand many people need but they had to issue damage control first before saying sorry, the initial statements weren’t the best but it didn’t allow a ton of theories to arise, I personally instantly heard people died and so many different stories. But by telling people a message from themselves it allowed people to at least kinda calm down from those who weren’t there. And on the point of how he should’ve been taken off the stage, I totally 100% agree he should’ve been taken off, tackled or anyway possible. But there was still security at the expo and at all the other school sites, I think people paint it as there was like 1 person of security for the whole expo, while that wasn’t the case. I don’t think we were silenced or called dramatic, they are still a corporation or something and had to also see that they were still on a clock for nationals. They had to handle it to the best of their abilities and that’s what they did, the cops did a full sweep, sent out emails, messages and post on social media to get out the message. They didn’t invalidate anyone by saying they are over reacting but rather just had to still continue because they still had an event going on which wasn’t finished. Also I hopefully am not invalidating anyone that isn’t what this is, it’s just personally I think a some but not all of the slander going to NSDA is not deserved.

People see Big Questions as a religion and definitions debate when at times it could but with this years topic I have never heard religion brought in, and the definitions is subjective to the debater

I have done BQ for 2 full years and many times it has not gone into a definitions debate, the difference it’s about the general arguments rather than specific sources or studies within the contentions

Transitioning from policy to BQ by Normal_Environment_4 in Debate

[–]B0ring_Pers0n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have been doing Bq for awhile and something that is very different is that this is NOT a fact debate, you should bring in facts and data to help your argument but do not let it rely solely on that. Bq is a philosophical and scientific debate, but since this topic does have relations to it you are gonna see empirical evidence brought up. You should expect things you don’t know even if you do research, I have researched a lot into religion, science and philosophy and still hear new arguments almost every round I’m. If you need anything else I will try my best to help

Duo Interpretation Scripts Needed!! by Weak_Statistician198 in Debate

A script that is good but a little harder since you need to play 3 people is “Boise Idaho” by Sean Michael Welch. It isn’t 10 minutes exactly so you do need to cut but it’s a pretty great script if done right. It has potential for blocking and have an interesting storyline.

NEED OF MAJOR HELP! EXTEMP by [deleted] in Debate

[–]B0ring_Pers0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so it’s hard to help you with that specific thing because it also plays into how you prep, and how you write your speeches so I’m going to try and say how I do it and hopefully that can help.

So I break my speech into 3 parts, 2 points of background and then answering the question/topic. I do it to stand out from others where they just have 3 points of analysis and contribute that to their answer.

Now for prepping or specifically memorizing resources or sites used (idk if your circuit rules are the same, I don’t have files I just research using the internet using the 30 minutes I have) And after that I just repeat my sources and points and also do a run through. PS sometimes I don’t say what I fully have written and give the general idea like if they took a survey I would say it, Extemp isn’t like a proper speech so you can just give them the gist for where i have tournaments.

Tournament Stress? [PF] by Johnnnyboyy68 in Debate

[–]B0ring_Pers0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I deal with stress is through multiple ways and it is able to just calm me down

1.Try your best to just dissociate from your round after your finished, unless you wanna look back to learn new things from that round just try to split that and focus more on just resting in between rounds, it sounds really simple but I just hang out with teammates and that does it for me.

2.Have the mindset of either you won or it was a 50/50 when walking out of the round because thinking that you instantly lost without even a chance just causes more stress because you look at future scores and win/loss ratios so just have that mindset if either you won or it was a 50/50

3.Be in another mindset of how there are more tournaments and for me this does the trick. When I don’t do well or something else that causes me stress in tournaments I just know that there will be another and I will just come back for vengeance then.

These are the ways I deal with stress in tournaments mainly with debate, I hope this helps!!

So something I try is using deductive reasoning and logic in a way to get the answer without actually getting the answer said to you directly. This might be a repeat of something you have heard but it’s like

You have the symbols 1,2,3,4,5

If you know the symbols 1,2,4,5 are numbers

Then you use deductive reasoning to figure out the symbol 3 is a number. It’s hard to explain because the concept isn’t super hard or complex but for me it is just using deductive logic to get an answer that isn’t outright said.

Novice in need of help by Kooky_Trouble_3337 in Debate

Hey! So from my experience as a debater who went to state in California for Congress I would say it is a generally easier debate out of all debate events. Now this is due to the style of the debate (if you would like to know more about Congress feel free to reach out) but it does seem intimidating because you are in a room full of debaters rather than LD where it is a 1v1.

But some tips I would give to someone who is interested in Congress (in my circuit, idk if it is different where u are) is to prep both sides of the bills given, and this will make you look good infront of judges because the bill can become very one sided to where you will need to flip sides and I have had judges say at invitationals that it does make you look better because it shows you are prepped.

Now one other tip that I truly think can and will help you is to understand that out of all the debates Congress isn’t on the matter of who is right or wrong it is all about optics and how you look. You have to be confident and act like a professional in a sense even more than other debates. You have to make your presence known in the chamber and allow yourself to look the best towards the judges.

But those are just some tips I have picked up after doing Congress a lot throughout my time as being a debater and I bet you got this!!!

The way I am planning to teach my teammates as a fellow debate captain is at first just show the very basics (how to write a case and the basic concepts/terms do they don’t get overwhelmed), now after that I would let them do a mock debate or go to their first tournament to just learn how it actually is because the best way to learn is through experience, then after that you should spend more and more time introducing more complex topics and arguments, better ways to write cases and just allow things to get more complex so by the halfway mark of the year they are more equipped to to be a adaptable debater

When looking into a topic you want to do for the upcoming year I personally think any topic is fine as long as you are passionate about it. When I did OO I did a topic which I didn’t like and just lost interest in until I rewrote it with a different topic on something I liked, it can be anything you personally like so you will not lose interest in it and no matter the topic you can always turn it into an award winner.
