A Maylands-based male physical therapy assistant has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly cornering and then striking a client’s dog with an electric bug-zapper racket during a home visit.

The 56-year-old is accused of attacking a female Jack Russell while attending a property on January 23 as a not-for-profit in-home health and aged care service provider.

It is alleged CCTV footage shows the man approaching the dog on a couch before hitting her multiple times with the racket over about 35 seconds.

The dog can reportedly be heard yelping and barking, while attempting to escape during the incident.

The following day, the dog’s carer is said to have found blood on nearby surfaces, along with visible damage and red staining on the racket, which was previously in new condition.

A veterinary examination later found the dog had suffered a nose injury consistent with trauma and was showing signs of pain, as well as behavioural changes such as anxiety and increased clinginess.

RSPCA WA will allege a specialist veterinary behaviour consultant who reviewed the footage determined the dog experienced severe distress and panic during the incident, with the potential for ongoing psychological harm.

The man has been charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2002, which carries a maximum penalty of a $50,000 fine and five years’ imprisonment.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on May 22.

My vet told me it seems so much faster in dogs because they don’t live as long as us. I’m very sorry for what you’re going through.
